Common Questions and Answers about Venlafaxine serotonin syndrome

effexor

Avatar n tn I am having severe depression, tremors, anxiety, nausea and vomiting. I believe I had serotonin syndrome because my psychiatrist decreased my Remeron use and started me on Cymbalta at the same time, and it resulted in very scary results. So I stopped all medication a week ago. I want to take Lexapro but I'm scared that my body can't handle 10 mg. Would it be alright for me to start at 2.5 mg at first?
469210 tn?1219188128 TRAMADOL (in Ultram) may interact with VENLAFAXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (in Effexor) Both venlafaxine and tramadol have an effect on serotonin, a chemical that is found in the brain. Excess levels of serotonin in the brain may cause serious or potentially life-threatening side effects. Early signs of this problem include increased confusion and restlessness. Other possible symptoms may include weakness, fever, nausea, and anxiety.
Avatar f tn Hi, Effexor as I know is Venlafaxine, which is an anti depressant of SNRI origin. It is best that you speak with a psychiatrist for the same than a Neurologist. It has to be prescribed by a RMP and the prescription should be strictly followed as it as a lot of adverse effects.

Avatar m tn Is it possible to get a mild form of serotonin syndrome from taking Buspar 10mg twice a day and also smoking some concentrated THC (wax)? I have been worried about this for a few weeks because I haven't felt the same ever since. I thought I may have chronic fatigue syndrome but I am now thinking it could have been serotonin syndrome. I was feeling impulsive and I did not plan to smoke very much of this "wax", but I ended up choking on it a little bit and I got extremely high.
Avatar m tn Is it possible to get a mild form of serotonin syndrome from taking Buspar 10mg twice a day and also smoking some concentrated THC (wax)? This thought has come and gone for me for a few weeks because I haven't felt the same ever since. I thought I may have chronic fatigue syndrome (I suspected I have fibromyalgia too) but I am now thinking it could have been serotonin syndrome recently.
Avatar f tn Oh, I forget to mention.... It is very unlikly that his problem was related to the Cymbalta causing Serotonin Syndrome. That's because Cymbalta does not act on Serotonin such as more traditional SSRI medications do. Cymbalta is an SNRI and acts mainly on Neurephinepherine neurotransmitters, and not Serotonin Neurotransmitters.
Avatar n tn Has anyone ever had Serotonin syndrome. I am desperate to talk with someone else that has experienced this horrible event.
Avatar n tn Told my boyfriend to make a promise to take me to a psychiatrist. Obviously I have serotonin syndrome, but nobody seems to listen. I can tell it's affecting my kidneys now...major withdrawals symptoms, etc. Has anyone ever had it before and it is just my imagination or should I be seeking immediate care, or do I continue my days of malaise until my 2-7 weeks is up? please answer...desperately seeking answers...
Avatar f tn Can serotonin syndrome develop gradually and be mild vs just the short term acute serious descriptions I've read? I have unexplained neuro sx including clonus and hyperreflexia and have been taking 20 mg of celebs for over 5 yrs. is this a possible cause?
Avatar f tn If you experience fever then there is high chance you have either serotonin or a viral infection. In contrary to the calming effect of serotonin, serotonin syndrome will mostly make you hyperactive, stiff, tremors and in the worse case will cause fever and this when it is potentially dangerous. Anxiety and stress can cause tremors too. If you have been stressed out lately then it could explain the tremors too and also various aches.
Avatar f tn Adderal mimic serotonin syndrome like do all amphetamines. If you get fever then rush to the hospital. Benzos like Xanax are used to calm someone from a serotonin syndrome.. Just letting you know.
968908 tn?1274871115 erm no i'm sure that this is Serotonin syndrome cause for 1 i am not taking any other serotopic drugs, such as you suggest. Also my symptoms fit to a tee, and this is trusting my instincts. There is no 'test' to diganose this condition, only supportive care. If you go onto any web-site regarding this you will see that all the symtoms i have spoken of are in the 'mild to moderate' cat... Thank-you for trying to diganose my smyptoms though and taking your time to respond...
Avatar n tn 5 miligrams of effexor my question is this, is it likely or will i get serotonin syndrome from taking these 2 meds together? Please answer as I have stopped taking both of them because i am scared out of my head!!
Avatar f tn If you were on Paxil for 17 years straight, quitting can be very very difficult. Lexapro won't make it any easier since it's a different drug. You were on a very low dose of Paxil, but still, that's a long time, and Paxil packs a heck of a withdrawal for many people. So it could be that. Someone on it for that long would usually taper off very slowly. It could also be that being on it that long has burned you out for ssris. Who knows?
Avatar f tn Well the next night it happened again I took the ativan they perscribed and it seemed to help calm me but the pain was still there. I went and saw my doctor who told me serotonin syndrome usually passes within a few days it has been a week now and I feel horrible and I keep having these attacks (although not as intense). Therefore, my question is how long does this last because I cannot handle it anymore it is painful and I am soo exhausted.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm desperate for some answers about Serotonin Syndrome. I just went through the worst hell of my life and want my life back. I'm a healthy 31 yo, female. Here's what happened... My doctor prescribed me lexapro about a week and half ago after i complained of anxiety. i was very happy, didn't suffer from depression and my anxiety wasn't severe. She also prescribed me Bentyl for some GI pains.
Avatar f tn I knew it all looked exactly like serotonin syndrome/serotonin toxicity, so I called my doctor who advised I stop taking my Effexor, but I couldn't sleep for days and I got so bad that I had to go to the ER before I could get to my appointment with her. I was, indeed, diagnosed with serotonin syndrome, much to the shock of the doctor on call who diagnosed me. He'd never seen a case like mine, but there it was.
Avatar f tn I have been on 75 mg of Venlafaxine for about 2 years. I cut the dosage in half for about 2 weeks and them stopped altogether. Unfortunately I didn't do much research before discontinuing so I didn't really know what to expect. I have been experiencing nausea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, some loss of bladder control, headache, weakness, sleepiness. It has now been about 4 days since I stopped taking the 35.7 mg dose. I would appreciate any advice about treating my symptoms.
Avatar f tn t create any artificial serotonin. They utilize the natural serotonin already being made by the body and alter how the brain uses it. And I'm not endorsing 5-HTP as the best natural supplement to take -- natural medicine is more complex than taking one supplement usually anyway -- I'm just trying to avoid scaring people with misinformation so they can have the full range of options open to them to make an informed decision on how to manage their problem.
471949 tn?1236904026 I get my medical care at the Dayton VA hospital. An RN there prescribed me both Wellbutrin (Buspar) and Trazodone. Come to find out, that's a HUGE no-no. The drug interaction between those two causes serotonin syndrome. I found out too late. I've been sick the past several days with it. It's horrid. I'm now self-tapering down my Wellbutrin. The RN that I used to see was promoted a couple of months ago to a position where she no longer sees pts---gee I wonder why???
