Good thing about Lithium is even if you don't have Bi-polar, it will still help a lot as an add on medication for your Effexor XR. Generic Venlafaxine has no sustained release properties to it. This can pose a problem because it has such a short half life as atidepressants go. making the switch to Effexor XR and adding Lithium should make a world of difference.

So this doctor told you that the only other two medications like Effexor was Welbutrin and another? I'm sorry but I must call BS on that doctor because Welbutrin is totally different from Effexor. Welbutrin isn't even a close relative to Effexor. It works in a MUCH different way and on a MUCH different neurotransmitter. Since this doctor can not find you a viable alternative (Probably because of lack of experience) then tell him to prescribe you generic Venlafaxine.

Been on Effexor XR for maybe 4yrs and recently rec. venlafaxine instead via mailorder. I assumed Effexor XR must have just gone generic. I've been on Effexor XR (venlafaxine) for more than a decade. I take it at night as I'm heading to bed and have done that since the very beginning and have no problem with it causing sleeping problems. I am very surprised that your doc started you out at a 75 mg dose as the typical onboarding dosage is only 37.5 mg for the first week or two and then increased, if warranted. The only problem I have ever had with Effexor was that it is incredibly difficult to stop taking.

If you do try Effexor XR....DO NOT GET THE GENERIC VENLAFAXINE! Big difference in terms of the release mechinism. Venlafaxine hits too hard too fast because it has no slow release property like Effexor XR has.

If you are taking the Effexor XR you need to continue with it.the same dosage. The XR means it has an extended release and you get a leveled dose all day long. Changing to a regular form of effexor/venlafaxine would give you a one-time shot of the drug. I can't help with the pricing. Good Luck!

I tried Pristiq in an attempt to help with menopausal symptoms. I was (and am) on Effexor XR, and Pristiq is almost identical to Effexor XR. I think the only difference is in their molecules. I didn't find Pristiq any better (for me) than Effexor XR, so I went back to Effexor XR. I wish you the best of luck with it. I hope it works for you.

Yes, I would also recommend that you consult with your doctor. I would ask about taking the Effexor XR pills which are timed to last the full 24 hours. So I wouldn't think in that case it should matter. But be sure to tell your doctor about your sleepiness. Maybe just reducing the dose could help you. I always took less than 150mg.
