Varicose veins valves

Common Questions and Answers about Varicose veins valves

varicose-veins

Avatar m tn Varicose veins usually result from failures in valves in veins connecting the superficial veins to the deep system in your legs. This is a mechanical problem. No medicine can restore this function. Horse chestnut extracts have been studied and appear to decrease the swelling due to venous insufficiency but the appearance is unchanged.
Avatar f tn The treatment will depend on the severity of disease. If you have multiple varicose veins, then the cause could be prolonged standing, faulty valves, family history, blood pressure and cholesterol problems, sedentary life style, congenital malformation of veins, and obesity. If any of the causes which can be controlled are detected then taking care of those causes can reduce the progression of varicose veins. A duplex ultrasound of the vein will need to be carried out.
Avatar f tn org/diseases-conditions/varicose-veins/symptoms-causes/syc-20350643. Basically, weak or damaged valves lead to varicose veins. Being obese is a risk factor and losing weight would likely help a multitude of things in your life. That's never easy but something that would be very beneficial to work on. Sitting for prolonged periods of time also contribute to varicose veins. You are a young man and this should be a priority for your health.
155701 tn?1230047101 When I lean against something (like the bathroom vanity), it feels like a big bruise. These are not spider veins or varicose. They look like normal veins except that they're very noticable and only on the upper region of my right thigh. I wouldn't be worried about them except for the fact that they feel like a bruise. Any ideas?
1907180 tn?1329450777 I am not sure if I have varicose veins or not. I am around 50 lbs overweight and 6 1/2 weeks pregnant. My legs are aching really bad from the knees to my ankles. I do have some small prominent blue bulging veins near the surface, but they have been there for years and never hurt. Can a person have them so deep that you can't see it? I fell last week and have some very deep and large contusions on the front of my right leg. My calves seem to be slightly swollen, but my ankles are normal.
1138687 tn?1548643978 The vein valves weaken or are damaged causing blood to backflow. If your varicose veins are causing you pain or discomfort, it is best that you have this evaluated by your doctor for proper management. Endothermal ablation, sclerotherapy, and even phlebectomy may be indicated. Compression stockings may also help improve the circulation in the legs. Avoid standing or sitting still for long periods, and take regular breaks throughout the day. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Varicose veins in or near the penis is rather rare. The varicose veins themselves are formed mainly in the legs, mostly because the valves in the veins do not function properly. Are you sure it is varicose veins? You may want to read up a bit more about these to ensure your husband has varicose veins - here's a comprehensive resource on vv - http://www.legpain.guide/g/52/ Hope this helps, all the best!
1958640 tn?1343222499 It does nothing to help back pressure into veins where the problem is failed valves which allow the flow of blood backwards into dilated veins. Compression helps. Various extracts of horse chesnut have been shown to decrease capillary permeability and lessen the swelling associated with venous stasis disease.
Avatar f tn If kidney, heart and liver problems have been taken care of, then the pain and swelling in the legs could be due to varicose veins with faulty valves of the deep vein causing venous pooling. A dopplar study or angiogram of the blood vessels of the leg should be done. Wearing a hose or stocking specially designed for varicose veins may help. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
907968 tn?1292622204 There isnt an artery you can lose in your leg for a bypass, but the body can cope with losing a few veins. Arteries are much stronger than veins and veins have tiny flaps in them which act as one way valves. When these break down, the vein wall weakens making it swell and varicose. So, due to their superior quality and strength, arteries are the favoured vessels for a bypass. They can use one of a pair from the left side of the chest and one from a pair on the right side of the chest.
Avatar n tn One might wonder if you have weakened vein walls that they get so big when putting pressure on the leg standing? Was varicose veins suggested? Did they think you might have blood pooling in your lower extremities with standing? I know there are bulges in veins where there are valves, did the doctor say that there is a valve where they intersect?
Avatar m tn There is less pressure, but veins have valves that act as one-way flaps (fight against gravity). These valves prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. If the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect there. This problem is called venous insufficiency or weak vein. As it pertains to heart attack and/or stroke. Severe venous insufficiency is pooling of blood in the veins that slows the return of blood to the heart.
Avatar m tn Hi, At this point, what you have may be a varicose vein (this is the most likely differential that comes to mind). Varicose veins in the penis rarely involve the head.Varicose veins are simply engorged superficial veins that may be noted even when the penis is flaccid. Without pain, redness, change in urinary pattern ,there seems to be no indication for further intervention. A penile ultrasound may help exclude a blood clot.
Avatar f tn We'll look forward to seeing your current labs; you can post the results and reference ranges as soon as you get them, then we'll be able to see exactly what your thyroid levels are. That will help us tell how much your thyroid might be contributing to your swelling/edema. If you're already staying off wheat (gluten) and dairy, soy, peanuts, sugar and corn, it sounds like you pretty much have the biggest offenders covered.
Avatar n tn Also, venous congestion due to either varicose veins or incompetent valves may also lead to heaviness in legs. Do you have swelling in legs or feet?
Avatar f tn Hi there, What are the other associated symptoms you have been having? Varicose veins appear swollen, twisted, and may cause heaviness, aching and pain in the legs. In severe cases there may be brownish discoloration of the skin at the ankles and skin ulcers. Defective valves, pregnancy, obesity, thrombophlebitis all can put at risk of deep vein thrombosis. If you are doubtful it is best to seek medical help.
Avatar f tn Hi Varicose veins can also cause venous pooling as they are the result of either faulty valves or deep vein thrombus. While at work, keep your feet raised on a stool or something and move about once in a while to allow the leg muscles to contract. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn Have you undergone any recent surgery on the right leg, ankle or the foot? Is there any history of varicose veins or defective valves in the leg veins? I hope you are not taking any hormone like estrogens, perimenopausal? This needs urgent attention by a surgeon. Have you been checked for diabetes? It could be an abscess needing urgent drainage. You must go to the emergency room and an urgent x ray done to check for any ankle fracture.
Avatar m tn The veins just below the skin in the arms and legs are unsupported by adjacent muscle tissue and are more prone to expansion due to pressure. The greatest influence is gravity. This is most evident by its cause for varicose veins....the valves in the legs are there to keep the blood from pooling due to gravity, however over time they begin to leak and the resulting pooling of blood results in greatly expanded veins. This effect is less prominent in the arms for a variety of reasons...
Avatar m tn This appears to be due to incompetent valves in deep veins of hands or varicose veins. You need to consult a surgeon for examination. You will have to undergo a duplex ultrasound of the veins to confirm the diagnosis. Hyperhidrosis, raynaud’s phenomenon are other possibilities and connective tissue disorders like scleroderma, polymyositis, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE etc. will have to be checked for. Hope this helps. Take care.
1138687 tn?1548643978 Hi, I am wondering why there isn't a varicose veins forum!? Where else might I post my varicose veins concerns? I posted in the Deep Vein Thrombosis forum but noticed it is rarely used. I'm not certain but isn't DVT a result of varicose veins? And if varicose veins are more common, with DVT being a side affect, then Why not change that forum to Varicose Veins? Regardless shouldn't there be a forum for varicose veins?
Avatar n tn If you already have varicose veins you may have some doubts about taking birth control pills. If your varicose veins are mild and are not a symptom of a more serious condition, your doctor may agree to prescribe a low-dose estrogen pill. In this case it's up to you to decide what your priorities are. You may feel that the advantages of taking the pill outweigh the risk of varicose veins. That said I doubt if taking the pill would stop the problem! Ask the doctor for his/her opinion.
Avatar f tn ve got 3 weeks left on it. I also have painful varicose veins that seem to be getting worse. Can you offer some information and support? Thank you very much. By the way I am not sterile...I have 4 children!!! This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/264706'>rising TSH after mantle field radiation..Hodgkins Lymphoma</a>.
Avatar n tn Note that when you have laser treatment it destroys the veins so the blood will go to other veins and the problem will most likely return.
Avatar n tn Spider web veins and varicose veins interfer with the blood circulation to lower extremites and poor circulation can cause the numbness. They form when blood flow is slow due to weak valves (valves are a one-way flap tha closes as the blood moves toward the heart to prevent backflow due to gravity. If blood returning to the heart is slower than normal due to the veins confirguration, that could cause the heart to beat faster than normal.
