Valtrex for treatment of shingles

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex for treatment of shingles

valtrex

Avatar f tn I realize I have another thread but I would like to know if valtrex or any other med would fix this. To rehash my situation I have tested positive for hsv1 via blood test score was 30. I have had a burn tip of penis for 10 weeks since the incident. I don't need to hear that this is not a symptom of herpes or its anxiety related. All I want to know is would herpes meds cure burn in tip of penis regardless of length of time with no blisters?
Avatar n tn How were you diagnosed as having shingles? Shingles very rarely reoccurs. I'd be questioning the diagnosis of shingles at this point if I were you.
Avatar n tn It does sound like shingles, though you are correct, not a common site for shingles but not unheard of by any means. The way the distinction would be made is through a swab test (preferrably PCR) that would look for varicella Zoster and herpes simplex virus. Only that test is going to be able to distinguish between the two for you. My guess is zoster, but if you are concerned, this swab test can be performed.
Avatar n tn You can also take over-the-counter pain medicines, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen, to help reduce pain during an attack of shingles and antibiotics to prevent any infection. Please consult a dermatologist and get them prescribed. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar m tn At that time, you described a partner with a diagnosis of shingles of the thigh, who then later developed a genital area lesion. Dr. Hook suggested tests to confirm whether she had HSV-2. Was that done? My responses to your specific question assume your current partner has confirmed genital HSV-2. 1) Even without condoms and no treatment, and assuming you avoid sex during known outbreaks, the average transmission risk in such situations is around 5% per year; i.e.
Avatar f tn Testing for shingles will not help me as I will have the antibodies for shingles as the antibodies for shingles and chicken pox are the same, and I have had chicken pox twice now so have the antibodies for life.
479224 tn?1214051852 I get a herpes out break when I stress real bad well I had an out break when I was on treatment for Hep C and it was a shingles outbreak and it hurt real bad and it was in my face but it dont break out to bad. But recently I had a herpies outbreak on my lower back where I usuall get it when I stress a lot.
Avatar f tn PHN occurs in up to 50 percent of everyone over 50 who comes down with shingles. If you don’t get treatment within three days of the appearance of the rash, your risk of PHN increases drastically, which is why you should start early. But if you’re already battling PHN, chances are your doctor has suggested that you take one of the tricyclic antidepressants, mainstays of conventional medicine for treating this condition.
Avatar m tn Since contracting HSV2 in August 2013, I have been in constant nerve pain in my butt, balls, left leg and now my left foot. I have been in this pain since I have been infected but with very limited OB's although it does ebb occasionally, but it's never gone. Since I haven't had any of this pain before August, I am attributing it to HSV2. Has anyone had a Shingles vaccine or thought of that. Would it help with the nerve pain? Aren't Shingles and HSV virtually the same.
Avatar n tn Hi, If she had a history of chicken pox, this could be shingles or herpes zoster. Shingles is an outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin. The first sign of shingles is often burning or tingling pain, or sometimes numbness or itch, in one particular location on only one side of the body. After several days or a week, a rash of fluid-filled blisters, similar to chickenpox, appears in one area on one side of the body. Shingles pain can be mild or intense.
233552 tn?1228319699 Aww I'm sorry. Its not all that uncommon to have outbreaks during pregnancy. However, shingles isn't an STD. Its a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, which is a member of the herpes family.
Avatar f tn I have HSV2 and have went on maintenance therapy about a month ago. Normally, one pill of valtrex would knock HSV2 dead in it's tracks. My skin down there is super sensitive to the touch where my underwear and pants rub it's almost unbearable. I've been taking 1000mg of Valtrex daily but it's not making a difference, I did have some sores down there a few weeks ago but there is nothing there but the pain is almost unbearable.
Avatar n tn Actually I'd be suspicious that what they called a shingles ob wasn't hsv2 to be honest. That's an area where genital herpes can occur in. Did they culture it or just give you a visual diagnosis of shingles? If you doubt your hsv2 score, get a herpes western blot sent off. http://depts.washington.edu/rspvirus/herpes.htm has the info you and your provider need to know for sending it.
Avatar m tn The problem with Shingles is that if your immune system gets compromised for any reason, Shingles can become active. I got Shingles when I had systemic vasculitis in 1993-94 and was on steroids for the vasculitis. Luckily, I recognized that I had Shingles fairly early in the outbreak, got a prescription for Valtrex, and had no residual nerve damage. But I do know people who have had severe cases of Shingles with major outbreaks and blistering and weeping.
Avatar n tn Was prescribed Valtrex for about 10 days. All this was taken cared of any shingles eliminated. My question is, would I be a good candidate to have the new vaccine for SHINGLES to prevent it happening again???? I am 74 year old female. Also, doctor, for the past month or so I have been feeling a slight pain on my right side below my rib cage. This pain is not too severe, but it is just an uncomfortable feeling. I have had bouts with I.B.S. causiing loose stools and diarrhea.
Avatar n tn They give u valtrex for it...I know its part of the chicken pox isue that lies dormant in ur body until ur immune system or something gets weak... Iam just curious has anyone experience this???
Avatar f tn Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) are approved for shingles. Acyclovir is the oldest, most studied of these drugs, but either famciclovir (Famvir) or valacyclovir (Valtrex), which are both metabolized into acyclovir, are now preferred to treat herpes zoster in most patients because they require fewer daily doses than the five doses needed with acyclovir.
Avatar m tn Two years ago I had lightheadedness for three months during summer. No symptoms last year during summer. This year, same lightheadedness at exactly the same time of the year as two years ago with a horrible outbreak of shingles around my waist. I believe the shingles just didn't break out two years ago. It's been 9 weeks since outbreak. Still lightheaded and a "funny" feeling with my right eye. Not drooping or loss of sight, just like a "pressure" feeling.
Avatar f tn However, valtrex did help alleviate my symptoms. He said sometimes the tests are wrong and I began a new treatment of 2g valtrex (1g twice a day) at the 1st sign of an upcoming outbreak and then (500mg) twice a day for 5 days. ( I have an extremely pronounced "prodrome" so I know it's coming a few days before it gets really bad- I get horrible gas, an itching feeling, followed by soreness, and nausea.) Even with the new dosage Iwas still having monthly outbreaks..
Avatar m tn I read your stats on it but I trust the word of a skin doctor over the word of a Family Practice Physician who has limited experience with shingles. One of the reasons the Dermatologist visually diagnosed it as NOT shingles was the placement of the lesions in relation to the neural pathway. They are getting better. And the Valtrex regimen I took, didn't do anything for me, at all.
Avatar n tn In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex. You might discuss with your docs whether you could try 500mg twice daily.
Avatar n tn t know how shingles would come into play, that would be for a dr. to say. The meds I take are preventative med for migraines and aspirin. Complicated migraines are just that.... COMPLICATED! Mine was a blood vessel that collapsed briefly causing blood flow to cease, similar to a clot, although I do not have clotting issues. Mine CM's are neurological and sometimes a headache and sometimes no headache. WEIRD!
Avatar n tn Ok thank you. Is that the price for just the test? No lab fee's included right? Me being pregnant, does that throw off my results at all? Is there any chance that shingles might have affected my HSV 1 results? I am on valtrex. equivocal means that it's not sure right? My midwife told me that it might be too early to tell if it's an early infection but, I have not had sexual intercourse in about 7 months since i found out i was pregnant.
