the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner. We'll never see studies with famvir or acyclovir either since both are generics and no money is to be made from doing the studies at this point.

I was on valtrex but do to the cost switched to acyclovir. The period of time I was on 1000mg of valtrex I never had a breakout. I get them on my hip normally when I am about to menstruate. It has been about 2 months since the switch to 1xday 800mg acyclovir and I have experienced an outbreak. I don't understand why since they are the same drug?
Now regarding herpes, if someone suspects herpes exposure, if I were to start on Valtrex within 24 hours, would this stop the virus from spreading or in other words kill it as so it cant spread any further. Same goes for taking Doxycycline stop all bacterials in there tracks prior to manifestation.
I just excepted that the results without any followup testing. I started taking daily Valtrex 500mg per day to avoid giving it to my girlfriend. I never had any symptoms or outbreaks. You can now get it done in Australia but you will need to pay for it - cost about $2k and not covered by medicare or private healthfund (if in Australia). the blood sample will be taken in Australia but will be shipped to Sequenom in San Diengo for testing as we do not have lab facility here yet.
