3990971 tn?1348946305 If you are on city water, find out what they add to your water. Just chlorine, or ammonia too? Get a filter that filters out whichever they add. The ammonia (chloramine) stuff takes a special filter.
7986870 tn?1401635716 There is, and I'm sorry I don't know the name of it. But as long as you're in a extremely ventilated place you should be fine. Like our on the porch.
Avatar f tn s OK as long as he place is well ventilated.. My hair stylist uses products that are ammonia free so that makes a huge difference.. I just don't like having to sit back with my head tilted for a long time..I actually get up and walk while I wait for the color to process.. Although I do not bleach my hair anymore either.. Hope this helps..
Avatar n tn Depending on where you live, your town's water supply may use a lot of ammonia or bleach to purify it. In my town, they use so much you can smell it right out of the tap. When you intake this, it is filtered out through the kidneys and down the urinary tract during urination, but your body will find other ways of getting it out too, like sweating or during ejaculation. Drinking bottled water should prevent this, if that's the case with your husband.

Avatar m tn Marcia makes a good point, Rocker funny but all too true.. you said angry, irritated and confused. Unless you are drinking highy polluted water it's not likely water alone would cause any of those symptoms. It is possibly withdrawal for AD's could, and also that low blood sugar could, and also that high ammonia levels could.
Avatar n tn If your city puts both chlorine and ammonia in your water system, consider getting a water filter that filters out both.
Avatar f tn Lactulose is also used to reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood of patients with liver disease. It works by drawing ammonia from the blood into the colon where it is removed from the body. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. That would be entirely irresponsible of your doctor to not tell you if you have HE. Did you not ask why your were taking lactulose?
Avatar f tn The is a score called a MELD score it uses some of your blood test results to stage your liver disease and determine transplant list placement. The MELD score uses your bilirubin creatinine and INR results. Do you have abdominal ultrasounds every 6 months along with blood testing to include a test called AFP? Have you had an upper endoscopy to check for esophageal varicies? Having problems with ammonia sounds like a symptom of liver cirrhosis. Have you been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis?
Avatar f tn Thank you! I've heard that they are the worst /: have you been induced before.?

680807 tn?1304496587 It seems that the smell of urine is a strong indicator for diabetics, the ammonia smell in a diabetic is usually due to dehydration, so yes not drinking enough can be the reason for your urine smelling like ammonia. There are other causes too, and i would hope that it wasn't just assumed to be because you have diabetes and that you have had tests to rule them out eg urinary track infection. This lists common causes http://www.buzzle.com/articles/ammonia-smelling-urine-in-women.
Avatar f tn Alternatively your city could have added ammonia to your water supply. You can buy a water filter that takes out both ammonia and chlorine, but most water filters don't take out ammonia (chloramine).

Avatar f tn I had to be told as I could barely smell anything as my sense of smell was very poor (one of the numerous symptoms I had of kidney failure). "the ammonia smell is from protein burning... acetone is from fat burning... *sigh* can you really tell the difference on clothes after exercising... in either case...
Avatar f tn My father in law has late stages of cirrhosis of the liver. He is back to drinking and will not take any meds. How long before the ammonia enters the brain and causes a coma?
Avatar n tn Lately when I urinate, it smells very strongly, but not of ammonia or of any of the other common complaints; more like animal urine (a very strong urine smell). I drink a lot of water, urinate regularly, and have no other symptoms. What could this be, should I be worried?

Avatar f tn Agree with bug - get his ammonia levels checked. Go to the ER if that's the only way you can get help. Ask the doctor on duty about Lactulose. Ask the doctor about how he can get his MELD score in case he needs to be listed for transplant. Have him get an account here so that he can start dealing with his own stuff and you can concentrate on your treatment.
