Common Questions and Answers about Urinary infection symptoms in cats

infection

Avatar f tn s a male and not neutered, he could be marking territory. OR it could be a Urinary Tract infection. Your vet would be the best one to ask. If it's behavior out of the ordinary, you should consult your vet.
Avatar n tn Crystals can be dangerous in male dogs because if they become large enough they can become lodged in the urethra and cause blockage (even in dogs, though more common in male cats). Most urinary tract infections do not involve crystals and can be successfully treated with antibiotics.
Avatar m tn This is a very common problem encountered in dogs and cats. The most likely diagnosis is a bladder stone. Rarely are urinary tract infections so severe that the owner can detect blood. It could be a UTI but either way your vet will need to see her. Expect a urine test and radiographs be recommended. Both of these conditions are quite painful so please seek veterinary attention immediately.
Avatar f tn I can't imagine my vet just sending my cat home when they could barely urinate. My vet wouldn't release mine until they were urinating well without a catheter....Royal Canin Urinary S/O...I swear by it.....available from vets or petsmart with a prescription...works for cats with ureteritis as well as stones...sometimes it is hard to detect what the blockage is....whether it is stones or just irritation...
931246 tn?1297902651 Hey, well my Mr Whiskey has crystals in his bladder again :(, taking him to the vet tonight... Now he has had it twice does anyone know the chance of him getting it a third time and what can I do to prevent him from getting them ago?
689528 tn?1364135841 He just got out of the vet from having trouble not being able to pee. lt ended up being a urinary tract infection and he had a lot of crystals in his urine. He was quite blocked up...it was even hard to get a catheter in him. Are there alternatives to prevent this from happening again? I have him on special food and cut down on the amount but is there anything I can give him to help?
Avatar n tn The only realy way to treat chronic UTIs in cats is to attack them from a preventative angle. Feed the cat foods that are very low in ash content to prevent crystals from forming, which irritate the urinary tract and lead to the infections. Other than that, once an infection has started, the only way to get rid of it is to use an antibiotic prescribed by a veterinarian. You said that your kitty gets these on a regular basis.
Avatar n tn My male cat has a urinary tract infection, with cristals. What brand name cat food should i buy?
Avatar f tn It could also be a symptom of urinary track infection, quite common, particularly in older male cats. A change in diet to a lower magnesium food should help but if he currently has an acute infection, he may also need meds from your vet. I would suggest offering both dry and canned food for older cats which are typically lower in ash and magnesium.
Avatar n tn Oh my, take that cat to the vet. Bleeding when urinating could be a result of a Urinary Tract Infection, very painful for the cat. I'm surprised he hasn't stopped using the box, as most cats associate it with the pain they feel when peeing. The vet will probably give you antibiotics and/or do a biopsy to see if there is blood in the bladder. UTI needs to be under control. Sometimes it comes and goes and so you need to keep an eye on kitty.
732991 tn?1241603294 I have read some articles, some articles said cats eat food with high salt can lead to urinary stones, but the other articles said high-salt and urinary calculi does not matter.Changes in eating habits, moving house can cause urinary stones. So which is true?
Avatar f tn Had a call from my midwife today to let me know the results of my urine test and they show I have a urinary tract infection (UTI). I've had no symptoms but she said I need some antibiotics. Has this happened to anyone else, should I be worried?
Avatar n tn First time on this web site. I have a 6 year old male Maine Coon (cat), who has been the most lovable cat. Tonight he started hissing at our other cats for no reason. We have a kitty box available, and "Big Kitty" never uses it. He has always gone outside to do his business. He's been in and out of the kitty box all night, and nothing is happening. Then he goes under the coffee table to clean himself and he growls, like he is in pain.
1460724 tn?1285932386 She lost weight and I took her to the vet and was treated for urinary tract infection. Ever since that time she is now the most aggressive of all the cats (as I come in the house, she is waiting there MEOWING at the top of her lungs). She no long hides, she appears to be always hungry and her preference is canned food and IAMS hairball dry food, she is thin, but still very active, jumping, chasing things and will nip you if you don't pet her when she wants.
514349 tn?1272801633 he is likely having some irritation involving his penis and needs a good urinalysis done, it could be crystals &/or a UTI (urinary tract infection) both need to be treated asap. male cats are especially prone to crystals especially as they age....always always feed male cats WET food, not dry....wet food is needed to keep their PH within normal range of under 7 and prevent crystals forming.
Avatar n tn It sounds like you may have a urinary tract infection - check in with your doctor and possibly see a urologist.
212705 tn?1221620650 Without watching him I would say this is a typical sign of crystals in the urine or urinary tract infection. There is nothing you will be able to do for him without a vets intervention because it means he can't pee properly and will have a blockage due to crystals or infection and this can lead to other major problems so seek help asap.
1356964 tn?1302087435 I don't know if it would live up to the claim of helping with urinary tract infections, however it is reportedly a very good litter..due to it being non clay and without the ingredient that gives it that clumping action(can't recall the name)... which does have many health issues associated with that.... I've been wanting to use it for my cats but so far can't buy it here in my area, would have to ship it in..and that gets expensive...
Avatar n tn She would litter in plants as well as her litter box. The vet dianosed her having a urinary track infection and prescribed special food for her, which pretty much handled the problem. Ask your vet if he carries it. I forgot the name since it was 6 yrs ago. The food is kind of expensive and if you have any more cats they will have to eat it as well.
Avatar f tn Is she going frequently to the litter box or squatting in places other than her litter box? If so, she may have a urinary infection and should be seen by your vet. Female cats don't seem to get urinary blockages like males do, but they do, indeed, get urinary infections. Keep us posted..
874521 tn?1424116797 Evo is an excellent diet. Even eating a diet that is considered to be urinary safe, cats can still have bladder issues. Struvite crystals typically form in a urine that is on the alkaline side. If you remember back to your chemistry days in school, water has a pH of 7. It is considered neutral. A cat is supposed to have a urine that is on the acid side. Diets or infections can cause the urine to become alkaline and predispose crystal formation.
1200566 tn?1265381052 85% OF INAPPROPRIATE URINATION PROBLEMS IN CATS ARE MEDICAL. Rarely is it behavioral. Please see a veterinarian again. FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) is common in cats and causes crystals to occur. The pH is changed when crystals are present, but you cannot smell a pH change. You can sometimes smell a bacterial infection or concentrated urine, but that is not diagnostic of a specific problem. The most common things that cause problems in urine are: crystals, bacteria, pH.
Avatar n tn You can get a bacterial infection from having sex with someone who has one or just from having poor hygiene in general. What type of bacterial infection do you mean?
Avatar f tn There is also a concern that this is related to kidney disease, a kidney infection, urinary stones etc. and all of those are urgent in requiring treatment. Here in Canada there are great third party financing companies (petcard is one of them...maybe theyre in the US too) that can help with delayed payments. I hope you can understand a vet's reluctance to create their own payment plan options. Good luck.
