1618318 tn?1318196283 I have swallowing disorders that put me at risk for aspiration pneumonia. Are there any tests that can be done to differentiate the type of pneumonia? I have had several xrays done on my chest and was put on antibiotics.
Avatar m tn As mentioned above. Also, Polio, Flu, HPV etc. You can get viral or bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia is infection of the lungs due to fluid buildup and then usually it is a "secondary" organism that was not the initial infection that you get when you have lowered immunity due to the virus or some other condition. You can also get bacterial pneumonia as a secondary infection. Bacterial pneumonia is usually caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Avatar n tn Also, when I wake in the morning, I usually have a feeling of discomfort in the right upper quadrant of my body.....just a vague aching. After I am out of bed and moving around, I don't notice it. Can you tell me if these symptoms go along with recovering from bacterial pneumonia? Thanks.
620048 tn?1358018235 Yes, the shot is only used for protection against bacterial infections. However, the bacterial type of pneumonia is the more serious one...the one that causes hospitalization and death. This is why my pulmonolgist insists on it. Again, my experience only and from the mouth of my own personal doctor.
Avatar f tn I am just guessing, but it seems like if you were diagnosed early and take your antibiotics or whatever the doctor has said to do, you won't have long-term negative results from a bout of pneumonia. I've had a lot of friends who have had it at one time or another, and the only risk is if they don't get treated.
Avatar f tn Much like a whooping cough or pleuritis (inflammation of the space surrounding the lungs), there will be episodes of gasping fits, even when things are getting better. fungal infections can be misdiagnosed as bacterial pneumonia, it has happened to me, but if the xrays are looking better then this likely is a bacterial infection. Ask your veterinarian if a bronchodilator will help and express with them your concerns, I am sure they will be happy to listen and work with you to help your dog.
Avatar f tn Since you previously had pneumonia and sinus infections, I would start with some of the stealth infections that are responsible for most atypical pneumonia but can become systemic (causing system-wide infections) later on and result in the types of symptoms that you have listed. Examples would be M. pneumoniae, C. pneumoniae and similar infections. There could also be one or more chronic viral infections as well.
Avatar f tn One ounce of Magnesium Chloride flakes (Pharmaceutical grade) per one liter of spring water, sipped very slowly throughout the entire day. Repeat for 3-4 days. Your symptoms indicate a viral or bacterial infection and are consistent with bronchiestasis. If it is viral, no medicine can help, once the virus has replicated. If bacterial, amoxicillin is the antibiotic of choice for bronchiectasis. You may want to consider Breathing Exercises for Bronchiectasis.
Avatar n tn It is best to stay away from the eldery or those with compromised immune systems while experiencing active bacterial pneumonia. The use of prednisone with these infections is controversial. I know many physicians prescribe a steroid to take with lung infections. My personal opinion is that the degradation of the immune response by the prednisone always outweighs the benefits.
Avatar f tn i think the tiredness goes hand in hand with pneumonia and any long term infection, however some types of pneumonia can cause anaemia (low amount of red blood cells) so this may also need to be checked out. I have terrible pain in my lungs every time i breathe or god forbid cough - i think it can be due to the actual infection the pneumonia causes or sometimes inflammation of the linings of the lungs.
Avatar f tn Anyway, there are different reasons we get pneumonia. People think of bacterial or viral. We can also have chemical or traumatic. And pneumonia is not like bronchitis. So, symptoms are not always as predictable. It can take a while to get over. If you still have your symptoms on day 5 on antibiotics, I would call your doctor. The thing with antibiotics is that different ones treat different pathogens. What pathogen caused your pneumonia if it is bacterial?
Avatar m tn i have a 45yr old female african american who is recovering from bacterial pneumonia and now she is experiencing some dyspnea with excessive fatigue, blurred vision, poor appetite, muscle weakness and edema in her lower extremities
Avatar n tn Female age 50 ... I was being treated for pneumonia with 10 days of levaquin and lodrain 24 D. On the fifth day I started having moderate and continual pain between my sholder blades in the upper back and heartburn (no heartburn for 25 years previously) and extreme fatigue. I thought it was the pneumonia and didn't go to the doctor for five days. My blood test then showed troponin was high, doctor said I may have had a heart attack. Doctor wanted a stress test ... which showed normal.
Avatar n tn Pneumonia is a very serious lung infection that is caused by several different types of bacteria or viruses. Since you got well and then got sick again, you may either have a resistant strain, or have picked up a secondary infection. Yellow phlegm with a clear x-ray sounds like bronchitis. Either way, you need to see a pulmonary doctor to prescribe a different antibiotic to treat this new infection. Be sure to get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids.
4250330 tn?1388621179 could you think of anything else i feel like i have the flu but im not really sure ive never had it before ... i have alot of stuff that is wrong with me like my back stomache head arms legs and of course my chest everytime i eat i can only take a few bites then quit and i havent really ate anything in like 3 days ?
Avatar n tn They can treat you with antibiotics if you have the secondary bacterial pneumonia but if it is Mycoplasma or Chlamydia they may or may not. I have had both Mycoplasma and Chlamdia pneumnia at the same time after getting the flu. You may just still have the viral pneumonia. You should revisit your doctor to be safe. If you have any other questions feel free.
Avatar n tn Pneumonia is defined as an inflammatory condition of the lungs. It does not "get into the blood". The causative agent may be viral, bacterial or chemical. If it is viral some studies suggest several grams of vitamin C a day will be helpful. Otherwise, as allmymarbles suggested, if the etiology is viral treatment is supportive.
Avatar n tn Hi, I think your biggest concern should be about her getting bacterial pneumonia. It might be just a virus for now, but a virus can lead to bacterial pneumonia. If she can't see a doctor because of cost or any other reason, she must go anyway for antibiotics if it turns into a bacterial pneumonia. https://www.webmd.com/lung/bacterial-pneumonia How high is her fever? Does she have these symptoms?
Avatar m tn t know his outcome due to the fact he has seemed to vanish. so I guess my question would have to be what types of infections would cause pneumonia bacterial and viral or are there certain fungal infections that can cause this.
Avatar n tn Bacterial or viral lung infection can precipitate asthma with wheezing in a person genetically predisposed to asthma. Treatment of the presumed asthma, aside from treatment of the infectious pneumonia, is appropriate. So, this could be asthma, superimposed on pneumonia. Your son could have whooping cough, despite immunization against it. If his fever and sweating with clammy skin has subsided, it is probably a sign that the antibiotic therapy has been effective and the pneumonia is clearing.
Avatar f tn Why are you taking tylenol? The fever is part of the immune system. Pathogenic organisms can only replicate within a narrow temperature range. The elevated body temperature is necssary to kill them. I cannot understand why these anti-fever meds are pushed by physicians who should know better. Take your time recovering. These lung infections can be very dangerous. Drink plenty of fluids, walk around a bit, and stay warm. Often a bacterial infection "piggybacks" on a viral infection.
Avatar n tn I was put on a couple of different antibiotics and the only thing that has changed was the color of my phlegm instead of being green and bloody its now just a thick white substance. i am having extremly bad pain in my chest its just about constant and gets worse with breathing and coughing. my doctor put me on pregnisone and anti-inflammatory's which just arent helping either is there anything else i can do? or could it be something else?
135456 tn?1301437624 The time span that I was on 1st tx, the break between and the duration of of 2nd tx was probably the most healty I've been in years. Of course, need to subtract the sx's and othe hcv baggage. During those two years, nothing came near me; colds, flu, infections, wife, kids. The only thing that approached me were our two dogs. But, i need to discount them somewhat because their main interest is sniffing foul things and investigating gross objects. And, I resembled that remark.
Avatar n tn It also suggests that the antibiotic therapy has not been based upon bacterial cultures of sputum or blood.
Avatar f tn With treatment bacterial is cured in 1-2 weeks..viral will last longer. There are vaccines now .The type of anti biotic depends on the type of pneumonia she has , as she has only taken the meds for a few days I would continue as prescribed but if indeed she seems worse and her temperature climbs it may be aswell to have her checked out again ..
Avatar m tn I have had atypical pneuomonia twice (mycoplasma pneumonia or walking pneumonia usually but it can be caused by chlamydia pneumonia too). Was this bout of atypical pneumonia following a influenza or cold? These are not too unusual either. You could be lactose intolerant, have wheat gluten intolerance or a food allergy of some other type. Crohns disease? I would do an emanation diet where you knock out all dairy and see if that works if not knock out all wheat etc.
