Avatar n tn Dear eniko, To test for diabetes would be simple enough so it wouldn't hurt to ask her doctor. But you say she is gaining weight and usually with type 1 diabetics, they lose weight. Plus, you didn't mention increased urination, as this is also very typical.
Avatar f tn I have type 2 diabetes and am trying to loose the 40+ pounds I've put on since being diagnosed two years ago. I am eating very little but still gaining weight. I was exercising a lot but had to stop because of fatigue. Sometimes I sleep 12-14 hours and wake up feeling as if I hadn't slept at all. I feel cold all the time no matter the weather, my hair is thinning, my nails are breaking, and my voice has become deep and husky. Anyone know what's wrong with me?
Avatar n tn Some people are able to control Type 2 diabetes with losing and maintaining healthy weight, lowering carb intake and regular exercise. Some are not, and need medication. It is impossible to answer your question because every diabetic is different and it would depend on how high your numbers were to begin with and what you ate and did. Serious consequences (complications) from diabetes don't occur in 24 hours, they occur over time spent at high numbers.
158939 tn?1274915197 Hi Utahmomma, I'm a momma, too, not a doc, so let the docs call it-- you definitely need to see a good endocrinologist. That said, I have a type-1 daughter and a type-2 husband, and type-2 is rampant in his family, so I'm pretty familiar with both. You're right that it makes no sense for him to have Type 2. I have heard of a couple of non-overweight people getting type 2 when there's a strong genetic history, but they don't usually get it until well into middle age.

Avatar n tn First of all Type 2 diabetes does run in the family. I had gestational diabetes in two of my pregnancies. Lately but not everysingle day however more often now I am continuously feeling nausiated, at times a headache or mild diziness with it. At times I go to the toilet feeling as if I am going to vomit (but I dont). I am absolutely not pregnant (I had a tubal ligation). there are times when I get shaky or irritable or feel a head rush without food. I am 5'4" inches tall.
Avatar n tn Join Weight Watchers for safe exercise regimens at each stage of your weight loss. (Weight Watchers also has a separate diabetes group if you're interested but I think the other suggestions I've listed are sufficient.) Avatar n tn Although there's no cure for type 2 diabetes, studies show it's possible for some people to reverse it. Through diet changes and weight loss, you may be able to reach and hold normal blood sugar levels without medication. This doesn't mean you're completely cured. Type 2 diabetes is an ongoing disease.
Avatar n tn If your diabetes is not well controlled this could be the cause of your not being able to gain weight. If you have Type 1 diabetes, you may also be at risk for other diseases that can contribute to poor weight gain, like Celiac disease. The other question is, why do you want to gain weight? You can some nutrient dense foods like nuts which have good fats and proteins without too high a carb load as part of your diet. Weight bearing exercise is great as a general rule.
Avatar n tn Eat healthy if you are trying to eat more to make you gain weight. Too much fatty stuff can make your cholesterol go higher as you get older (you're young now, but wait 10 or 20 years and then you'll start to worry about it). Eat too much sugar and then you gotta worry about diabetes. Well, okay not really, but if it runs in your family you might. Really, though, I'd have your doctor check your thyroid levels. You might have a thyroid problem.

Avatar m tn Type 2 diabetes formerly known as adult onset diabetes happens usually a bit later in life and is greatly impacted by the individual. One can typically prevent type 2 diabetes by lifestyle choices of proper weight, exercise and eating habits. This is considered non insulin diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, blood sugar is too high. The body doesn't make insulin well anymore or use it well. It's usually slow developing and can be reversed. I hope this answers your question.

Avatar n tn Are you a type 1 or type 2 diabetic? He is type 2 he started taking a new medication called byetta. You inject in your arm before you meals. My husband has lost 40 lbs in the last 6 months. He just can't eat like he used to since he has been on the byetta. It curves your appetite and apparently helps your body produce it's own insulin. It might be something you want to run by your endo doctor. Let me know.
