Common Questions and Answers about Type 2 diabetes prevention food

Avatar f tn Do i have a risk to get diabetes if my my mother had type 2 diabetes? Also i love sugar.
Avatar n tn Hi, Type 2 diabetes can be managed and possibly prevented via lifestyle modifications including increasing a person's activity level and changing their diet. Possible diet modifications include replacing simple carbohydrates (eg, soda, candy, white bread, white rice) with foods having a lower glycemic index, and limiting consumption of carbohydrates overall. The glycemic index is a measure of how much a food affects blood sugar levels.
Tbd Besides being overweight which is the most common reason, there's a lot of other reasons that may cause diabetes type 2. Another thing is age, the older you get, the chance are bigger you can get diabetes. I know it's already written, but I'll write it again, if you want to prevent it you should, of course, pay attention to nutrition and your eating habits in general. You can read more in the article below. https://www.hsph.harvard.
973741 tn?1342346373 Hi, We are talking about type 2 diabetes here. I will give a very simplified description of what happens. Obviously if you are at risk then the earlier you can adopt lifestyle measures the better your health will be. If you have a family history, even if you don't appear to have a current problem, then it is time to take action. Actually in America it is estimated that maybe 50% of the population are diabetic, prediabetic, or at risk of diabetes....
Avatar n tn It's gonna be like that untill someone extraordinary finds a way to completely fix type 2. Type 1 will never be fixed, but one day we may understand why it happens and will be preventable. For now it's either drastically lowering the consumption of carbs, or the drugs. There's no inbetween.
Business man2 Let us not forget Type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, lack of daily 30-60 exercise, and above all poor food choices. In its early stage it is possible to reverse diabetes. This does not mean you can ignore lifestyle changes by going back to the bad habits which created your diabetes, it means you must adhere to a diabetic prevention lifestyle or it will return.
Avatar n tn I’m descended from at least three generations of people who developed Type 2 diabetes early (in their thirties and forties) and died of it early (in their forties and fifties). My entire adult life (I am now 40) I’ve worked really hard to prevent it developing – I’m a fitness fanatic, with a healthy weight and an excellent diet. Despite all this, my annual check-ups have now indicated that I have “prediabetes” or “impaired glucose tolerance”.
Avatar f tn Vitamin B12 is present in natural form only in animal sources of food. A Mediterranean type of diet -with an occasional glass of red wine, lol!-seems to be the diet best for Alzheimer's prevention. Add coconut oil (virgin & organic), staying physically, socially and mentally active and you may have one of the best ways to prevent this disease. Post again, or PM me if you wish to discuss this topic further. This is not intended as replacement for medical advice. Cheers!
Avatar n tn I have a family history of Type 2 diabetes (my dad has it and 3 of my grandparents have it) so me getting would be no suprrise. I'm just surprised at the timing since I'm only 17. Then again, my eating habits have always been downright fate-tempting as I have a fast metabolism. In spite of it however I've gained a few kilograms of weight in the last few months. I'm getting a fasting blood test next week and want to know what my chances are of having Type 2.
Avatar f tn 51:03 In the United States, 1 in 3 people will have Type 2 diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The projections, released today, are alarming to U.S. health officials, who say the numbers highlight the need for interventions to keep the number of new cases from climbing. Currently, 1 in 10 Americans has Type 2 diabetes.
Avatar n tn Good sound advice from supersally down under. The A1c is called the hemoglobin A1c. It measures your average glucose for the past three months. Why is this test important? On an average red blood cells live 3 months. Excess glucose binds to "new" cells until they die off. The A1c captures this while the results are returned in % (percentage). If you get this test performed be sure to get a copy of your lab results and check the range values.

Avatar n tn Although I cannot speak for the effects of the plant in regard to Type 2 diabetics (the internet has a substantial amount of info), as a Type 1 diabetic I have on the odd occaision been prone to hypoglycemia after fainting from low blood pressure connected to having too much THC in my tea.
Avatar m tn Or maybe I have hidden forms of diabetes 2. I am failing 2 hour glucose tolerance test. And I am overweight and even though I exercise I still cannot loose weight. It all the GMO they put here in the foods and animal hormones that does it. And in my younger years I used to eat all this and drink lots of soda without thinking. So maybe my endocrine system is all messed up. Almost everybody is fat here which is an epidemic.
Avatar n tn Type 1 is an auto-immune disease, and at least at this point in the research, it appears unrelated to Type 2 -- much more common among overweight adults. There is soem Type 2 appearing in overweight kids, but your daughter is UNDERweight. A child who is underweight with the symptoms you describe may well be diabetic.

Type 2 diabetes, which is often tied to obesity, affects about 8 percent of the U.S. population, according to the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Avatar n tn Since the trip to the ER that changed his life, he has only been back twice-once for food poisoning and the other for a very high blood sugar. Thursday morning, he was figgeting with a fan and taking his clothes on and off. He was hot to the touch but his jaw was clamped too tight to get the thermometer in. He was not able to verbalize in complete sentences, if at all and at one point began a repetative loop "I don't know" Immediately I thought, low blood sugar.
Avatar f tn 70-99 mg/dl Normal 100-125 mg/dl Prediabetes Above 126 mg/dl Type 2 diabetes Since diabetes runs in your family ask your doctor for an A1c [HbA1c] test. See this link for an explanation. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/a1c-test/MY0102 An 8oz glass of milk contains on average 8 grams of sugar, every 7 grams equals one heaping Tablespoon of refined sugar. That alone will jack your postprandial [after meal] glucose levels upwards. Oatmeal spiced with cinnamon and fruits is my usual breakfast.

469720 tn?1388149949 As you may have noticed by now, the focus of this forum is cardiovascular disease(CVD) prevention. The statistics speak for themselves. CVD is the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide. Although we have made substantial progress in the development of medications to combat the causes of CVD like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes; the rapid proliferation of these diseases virtually negates and medical benefit. In other words, we are treating the consequences, not the cause.

148588 tn?1465782409 But diabetes is different. It doesn’t spread like an infectious disease. People develop type 2 diabetes when their extra pounds and sedentary lifestyle make their bodies less sensitive to insulin. That, in turn, causes their blood sugar to rise and can eventually lead to heart disease, nerve damage, kidney problems and other serious health issues. Researchers thought they might find a link between rising temperatures and diabetes for a completely different reason — the activity of brown fat.
Avatar f tn Also, if you are overweight, losing weight helps prevent Type 2 Diabetes. If you have already developed Type 2 Diabetes, weight loss may be all you need to clower your blood sugar to normal levels. He needs to understand that these do happen to everyone who ignores lifestyle changes - blindness and amputation being the end result. He needs to have a home glucose test meter. Avatar f tn Hello! Welcome to medhelp. Sorry you haven't gotten an answer to your question. Sounds like you are a very thoughtful person about your health which is great and cograts on losing some weight. I'm working on that myself! I have gotten into the DASH diet. It's recommended by the American Heart Association and is great for your health. However, it's really for prevention of hypertension, it's also good overall. So, for diabetes specific, there ARE dietary rules to follow.
Avatar f tn You need to see a doctor and have him assess you for nutritional deficiencies. In addition, cornstarch can raise glucose levels and precipitate type 2 diabetes, so you really need this checked out and addressed. Often, correcting the deficiency takes care of the problem. If it doesn't, you need to work on this as a type of OCD. Exposure and response prevention therapy is probably the most effective route for addressing OCD.
Avatar f tn ) In a diabetic, glucose levels rise higher than normal after drinking the glucose drink and come down to normal levels much slower (insulin is either not produced, or it is produced but the cells of the body do not respond to it) (see details on type 1 and type 2 diabetes for more information on this topic). As with fasting or random blood glucose tests, a markedly abnormal oral glucose tolerance test is diagnostic of diabetes.
