Avatar m tn Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is present up to one-third of the general population and the majority of patients with cardio-metabolic risk factors such as abdominal obesity, type 2 diabetes and other components of the metabolic syndrome (MS). The aim of the current study was to investigate the MPV in patients who had NAFLD. MPV values of the patients with NAFLD and of the patients without fatty liver disease were compared.

Avatar f tn Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone are glitazones and PPARg agonists that are FDAapproved and used widely to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as atopic dermatitis. Pioglitazone was successful in a 47 year-old male patient with active and symptomatic LPP who had failed all treatments.** The most common side effect of the glitazones is dosage dependent weight gain as a result of fluid retention and edema.
746058 tn?1248348265 Different types have different prognoses, but even within one type of dysautonomia there may be wide variance. Take POTS, for example. In a 2006 article, "The Postural Tachycardia Syndrome" by Drs. Blair Grubb (one of the most renowned specialists), Yousuf Kanjwal, and Daniel Kosinski a rating system is proposed to quantify the severity of orthostatic intolerance "(similar to that for heart failure)." Grade 0 is normal.
Avatar f tn Please give me details about tests, meds, eating habits, G/I and digestive symptoms, treatments-medical and natural- emotions and stress, traumatic past events-physical or emotional- activity level, exact muscle and joint symptoms, supplements, most recent tests for nutritional deficiencies including mineral analysis. What type of doctor and what type of diagnostic criteria and testing were used/performed for the Fibro dx?
1833449 tn?1333853101 I believe they are actually classified as either primary (such as familial dysautonomia) or secondary (such as dysautonomia caused by autonomic neuropathy from diabetes). There are other examples. My son developed secondary adrenal insufficiency and hypothyroidism also, in 2007. His symptoms became acute however, AFTER he began replacement hormone therapy. His doctor made the mistake of starting him on thyroxine first, without a proper assessment of his adrenal function.
Avatar f tn This study suggests that cigarette smoking is a negative predictor of SVR for genotype 2's and 3's but not genotype 1's. http://www.natap.org/2006/DDW/DDW_25.htm That said, there are studies out there that show that smoking can accelerate liver fibrosis. It would be refereshing if some of the energy here directed against social drinking would find its way into an anti-smoking message for those with Hep C.

Avatar n tn Since the chances of spreading it to loved ones is very slight even through sex (heterosexual sex seems to be 2% +/- 2% is what I tell people) the chances are SLIM especially when one is aware that one has HCV. Most of us were unable to transmit the virus through living with spouses and children even before we knew we had HCV. Treating is not without it's dangers.
Avatar m tn Meta-analysis: Vitamin D and Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease See: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/807726 Discussion In this systematic review and meta-analysis of approximately 5000 NAFLD cases and 8000 controls, we found lower vitamin D levels in NAFLD subjects compared with controls (SMD 0.36 ng/mL, 95% CI: 0.32, 0.40). Moreover, NAFLD subjects were 26% more likely to be vitamin D deficient (OR 1.26; 95% CI: 1.17, 1.35).
1815939 tn?1377995399 Factors associated with a higher risk of cirrhosis among HCV-positive patients included increasing age, white race, hypertension, history of alcohol abuse or dependence, and anemia. Diabetes, hypertension, and anemia were associated with a higher risk of developing hepatic decompensation. "Future studies should look at a risk prediction model to determine which characteristics most accurately predict future cirrhosis in a given individual," Dr. Butt said.
Avatar n tn The mother is concerned that the daughter now has a physical dependence on the Vicoden (maybe Percocet too), as the daughter has been using both now for 1-1/2 years; the mother is unsure if actual addiction (emotional, taking the drug for a "high") has resulted; but physical dependence is pretty much a given now. Other pain-management tools are being considered, as well as options to heal the open wound.
