Avatar n tn My teenage son was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Being a typical growing teenage boy, the temptation to snack often and on anything under the sun, is a constant battle. This has caused severe spikes in his blood sugar levels and I constantly worry about what long term effects this might have on his organs. Could you please tell me what complications over time can occur from high blood sugar levels.

Avatar m tn can be and how heartbreaking it is as a Mom when our kids feel miserable and end up needing more medical help. My DS will be 15 this month. He's been Type 1 for 8.5 years. He is on an insulin pump, using Novolog. Does your son do injections or a pump? My DS eats OK. He eats more junk than I'd like at times, but he's a kid and even his endo says that they are teens, will not make the best food choices and just need to make sure they are taking insulin to cover the carbs.
Avatar n tn Be sure to check your blood sugar, take your insulin, eat healthy and don't stress out. Complications are obviously possible but happen more with Type 2 diabetes. Your life will not be the same but you can still live a happy healthy rewarding full life as long as you do what the doctor tells you. Since you are a medical student you probably know about all the advances lately -- there are insulin pumps, glucose sensors, great meters, and new insulins.
598237 tn?1225647072 They design an individual programme for each child + they go to these 'integration kindergatens' were special needs specialist work with the kids in a normal classroom/kindergarten type setting. So they are mixed in but they get the specialist help they need. There is family training then with child psychologists + behaviour modification programmes. Near where I live there is a therapy centre where they use horses and the kids horse ride and take care of the horses.
Avatar n tn Are we gonna make it like Rocky? Tingling 2 the Revenge? My suggestion on how to sleep....is already known! Ok, I don't want to transform all of you in a bunch of drug addicted, but have you tried a tranquillizer just once? Just to see whether your tingling diminishes the moment you calm down? @rnneeedshelp: as my "colleague" has written, you are anxious over the symptoms, not the opposite, and the same is for all of us.
174267 tn?1220408828 LJ, Thinking of you. Please give us an update when you can. Nicki, Only 2 more days til Monday! About Maria...yes, we'll have to see what they say. Immigration laws have gotten so much stricter, I'm sure you've heard about all the marches. We're hoping that they might be more lenient with minors and that she may qualify for a student visa and temporary citizenship. We'll have to see what the social worker says.
469720 tn?1388149949 Although we have made substantial progress in the development of medications to combat the causes of CVD like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes; the rapid proliferation of these diseases virtually negates and medical benefit. In other words, we are treating the consequences, not the cause.
Avatar n tn I was referred to the Dr that delivered my other 2 kids as that is the ONLY place my insurance accepts for high-risk pregnancies for type 1 diabetes. Even though the other ob had messed up by measuring my uterus wrong (the u/s tech said no way was I measuring at 5 weeks, as a couple weeks later I was measuring at just over 14 weeks) the earliest appt I could get is for when I will be 18 weeks 3 days along.
Avatar n tn Hello, I have been living with type 1 diabetes for 27 years and I am only 33 years old. I have four kids. No problems. Take care of yourself and you do whatever life has to offer.
921323 tn?1268679412 Put the money towards the health costs of the uninsured. Or, use it to fund research in diabetes, heart disease, or any of the other countless complications of obesity. But is it too early to admit defeat? If we had done the same for cholesterol medications or diabetes medications, or even smoking patches and pills, we’d be paying for it in countless ways. So is there something unique about developing medications for obesity?

Don't focus on eight glasses a day. Four should do it. 4) Buy some good coffee and drink it black. Don't waste your money on caramel mocha whipped calorie bombs. A simple cup of good coffee barely has any calories. 5) Cut out soda. The key point here is to stop drinking soda rather than switching to diet soda.

802547 tn?1237850517 Whether for weight loss, or prevention of diabetes or other related medical problems, many women who struggled in their 20’s and 30’s finally find success in their 40’s. For many women at this age, previously insurmountable logistical barriers such as raising preschool age children, or inflexible work schedules, often improve somewhat.
282804 tn?1236837191 Also, in France, Drs get paid by how WELL their patients are. If they can get most of their patients to control diabetes, lower cholesterol, quit smoking, lose weight, etc., they get bonuses. The argument from the doctors standpoint is they won't get paid anything. However one Dr they interviewed lived in a million dollar home, drove a luxury car and had no debt. People over there in general have no debt.
808221 tn?1242747788 I drafted this document the other day and you will be the first. There are over 21 million American adults and children who suffer from diabetes type 2 and the number is growing rapidly each day. The typical diet high in sugar and processed foods only adds fatigue, creates cardio issues, and raises glucose levels which in turn brings about diabetes. Here are some tips to help control and lower your glucose: 1. Cut out sugar and processed foods.
Avatar f tn Snake bite- not that, diabetes neuorpathy- I don't have diabetes, whip lash- nope, stroke- nope, I forgot the other one but it wasn't that for sure, and then MS. So now I'm convinced I have MS. Went to my family doctor for bloodwork. Everything was great. SO NOW THAT MEANS I HAVE MS RIGHT? That would be the only condition that wouldn't affect my blood. There were no vitamin defincencys at all either.
Avatar n tn Character.... life builds character. People with cancer and diabetes aren't told "go without your meds, it will build character." Oh no, you see those kids on the t.v. with no hair and being told how brave and strong they are. What about the kids with schizophrenia, bipolar, and ADHD who struggle every day? This goes right back down to the truth. People do no believe that illnesses of the mind are real. They do not realize the havoc they wreak on our lives.
Avatar f tn Hi all. I'm a 56 year old female and I was diagnosed a few months ago with type II. Not too bad. AC1 of 6.4. Doc says if I lose weight and change lifestyle I can probably be diabetes free. Lost 17 lbs. Last AC1 was still 6.3. Was cheating a lot with candy and sugary stuff. So he put me on Metformin 500mg 2x a day. I have to say that taking that did make me feel a lot better.
373683 tn?1219000812 I try my best to stay in bed, but it's hard. My husband is sick with diabetes, and my kids are alway's needing me for something..... Luckily the pain is gone, but I can feel another one coming on......
1211850 tn?1266938568 5 years afterwards, everything is back to normal, as far as I can tell. I have type 2 diabetes; this actually is better in terms of management; I no longer require insulin, although I still take oral anti-diabetic pills. My eyesight has improved; I was 20/40 throughout Tx; last week, the ophthalmologist said my eyesight is 20/30. Possibly due to better blood sugar management?
4043517 tn?1374010173 Sheesh Saturday was a decent day, got up and forced myself to the volunteer activity I had promised to do at Botanica gardens, Sunday it was Bootanica and I spent 4 hours putting tattoos on little kids, then walked around the garden until it started raining. Sunday I had been wrangled into holding an open house, two visitors, I forgot my phone and spent my time reading Cosmo, hadn't read that in a while so time passed.
1794671 tn?1338798991 I have type1 diabetes since I was 7 and I had 2 kids, the pain started with me having kids. Having children was always risky for my body due to uncontrolled blood sugar but I never knew it would cause such bad pain. Never. I would still have my kids if I could go back, I am not sure how masochistic that sounds LOL! But I have been diagnosed with bilateral carpal tunnel along with diabetic polyneuropathy..
Avatar f tn I am a 54 yr old woman who has been spotting/bleeding for the past 3 1/2 years. EVERY DAY! Only went away for 5 months 2 1/2 yrs ago, then on again. Just had an endometrial biopsy at the "clinic" (charity care), and they say I have this complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia. They are telling me I need a hysterectomy, but before I can get it I need a hysteroscopy first. Telling me it is pre-cancerous, but that 40-55% is usually cancerous.
Avatar n tn His recommendations to you have been bad from the Day 1, when he recommended that you get the Crystalens despite the facts that (1) you didn't have cataracts, and (2) you were a high myope with a strong family history of retinal detachment. (I also suspect that your pupil size was such that post-surgery problems with glare were likely with the Crystalens.) Furthermore, his IOL power calculations were off, leaving you with one nearsighted eye and one farsighted eye (i.e.
Avatar n tn If you can, push your carbs lower and lower until you gradually get to 50 carbs or less per day. We could probably stop type 2 diabetes in its tracks in this country if this is the only change people made in their diets. I've been on an essentially zero-carb diet for several years (zero carb meaning 5 grams of carbs or less per day), and prior to that time was on Atkins (about 50-75 grams carbs per day) for 15 years.
Avatar n tn Eventually, liver failure can result. Autoimmune hepatitis is classified as type 1 or type 2. Type 1 is the most common form in North America. It can occur at any age but most often starts in adolescence or young adulthood.
