Common Questions and Answers about Type 2 diabetes facts for children

diabetes

Avatar f tn Hi all, Can somebody help me by suggesting the ways to prevent children from developing diabetes. Especially, if the family has the heredity of Type 2 diabetes. Anybody there to share the facts and truth of the having grown up children without diabetes though parents have it and though its present in heredity. Thanks!
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes ..We tried the oral meds for a bit and eventually had to move on to Insulin shots twice a day...Well I started an insulin pump when my son was born in 2003. I have been on it ever since. I know I am insulin dependent because I cannot take my pump off except for the rare few minutes or so without my sugar sky rocketing. Now would u still call this Type 2 Diabetes or Type 1?
Avatar n tn s gonna be like that untill someone extraordinary finds a way to completely fix type 2. Type 1 will never be fixed, but one day we may understand why it happens and will be preventable. For now it's either drastically lowering the consumption of carbs, or the drugs. There's no inbetween.
Avatar f tn Hi. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is different from type 1 diabetes, which isn't reversible. Type 2 can generally be reversed by changing your diet and getting plenty of exercise. The reason is that type 2 is caused by the body not being able to absorb or use the insulin it creates.
Avatar n tn Sorry, but eating this type of food WILL cause type 2 diabetes. Rice Krispie treats/bars contain marshmallows along with additional sugary additives like caramel, vanilla, and artificial sugary fruits. As a kid we called marshmallows fluffy sugar. One marshmallow contains close to 30% sugar. Nutrition facts for one Rice Krispie strawberry bar shows it contains 28 grams of sugar, or the equivalent of 4 [four] heaping Tablespoons of refined table sugar. Why is type 2 diabetes on the rise?
Avatar m tn Are you sure the diagnosis is correct? Most children who have type 2 diabetes have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, not very physically active and it usually develops around puberty. Tablets are not suitable for type 1 diabetics. Insulin injections are given daily or several times a day depending on the type of insulin used. An diabetic's HbA1c target is 6.5% or lower.
Avatar n tn m no expert, just the mom of a type 1 and the wife of a type II, but I have not heard of that. I thought Glucophage was strictly for type II diabetes. A read of the online literature says that stomach trouble is a side effect. Is there another endocrinologist in your area from whom you might seek a second opinion? Such a big increase in his A1-C needs to be dealt with, but there may well be other avenues to pursue than Glucophage. Does anyone else out there have experience with this issue?
Avatar f tn My parents are lot concerned about type 2 diabetes (cause of heredity) of my boyfriend. His Blood sugar level is completely under control for past 12 months. He developed diabetes only during 2006- Less then 14 months! Only during first two months it was high. Now its under control! My parents are worried and concerned about our marriage. Looks like they are unhappy, feared about the complications, Child birth and may reject the proposal.
Avatar n tn Some people are able to control Type 2 diabetes with losing and maintaining healthy weight, lowering carb intake and regular exercise. Some are not, and need medication. It is impossible to answer your question because every diabetic is different and it would depend on how high your numbers were to begin with and what you ate and did. Serious consequences (complications) from diabetes don't occur in 24 hours, they occur over time spent at high numbers.
Avatar n tn In reference to the cousins that are overweight, they should try to reduce their size as obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes. The risk of type 2 can be greatly reduced by weight loss and proper diet. I would have them consult their doctor as to a healthy ways for them to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Avatar f tn 1) If your fiance has Type 2 diabetes that is recently diagnosed and is now under control, his outlook for life is actually quite good. There are many individuals who have had Type 2 diabetes for years and years, and do not develop any complications at all. Some do, but there are treatments for that as well. Much of this is in your fiance's and his physician's hands--good control will help him live a long and healthy life. But he needs to take charge.
Avatar n tn I am also another volunteer here. I've had Type I diabetes for over 10 years. Was diagnosed at 18. I don't have any children yet but I understand how you feel because having a helathy pregnancy and child in the future is always on my mind. However, interestingly enough I had never really worried too much about my child being diabetic since I don't believe that Type I diabetes in hereditary.
Avatar n tn There are 3 types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational. Then I say there is type 4. The family members that care for and help support the children and adults with diabetes. Avatar f tn My three year old son drinks a lot, uses the restroom quite frequently, and says he's really tired a lot here recently. What is a normal blood sugar for someone his age? And could he possibly have diabetes? He has a family history of both type 1 & 2 diabetes on both sides. He isn't losing any weight and plays as normal.

Avatar n tn CLBear, You might enjoy a diabetes discussion board that's got topics for Type 2s and Type 1s and for the stuff we share. I highly recommend this site: http://chat.joslin.harvard.edu:8080/~diabetes You don't need to register to read the information there, but you may need to register to post (it's free, tho').
