Common Questions and Answers about Type 2 diabetes and ketosis

diabetes

Avatar n tn Dietary Ketosis has nothing to do with BG until your liver runs out of stored glucagon it can continue to raise BG (ie 8 - 10 hour high when fasting) how low are you going on the carbs? you can be in Ketosis with high BG. Ketosis means your body is using ketones for fuel instead of glucose. Diabetesforum(dot)com has many people doing diatery Ketosis.
Avatar f tn Instead of finding any sugar, they found a high level of Ketones, which they claimed they should only see if she were sick and dehydrated. We've done blood tests, an MRI looking for Diabetes Insipidus, and are scheduled for a Nephrologist next month. My biggest concern (aside from the water intake) is the occasional Ketosis she's experiencing. She has the acetone breath, ketones in her urine and very slightly elevated blood sugar (168 after a breakfast of yogurt).
Avatar f tn his doc is sending him to a ped endo they keep talking about type 1 diabetes with me. I thought type 1 diabetes has sudden symptoms and kids get sick quickly? He drinks and pees alot sometimes but that isn't a constant issue it comes and goes. he did lose a couple pounds recently. they did a fasting check last week and it was 92....but then his urine test results came back and they are all worried again? I don't know what to think or what is going on.
Avatar m tn Hey Jim! It actually advisable for type 2's to go low, low carb. I avoid medication by living a Paleo dietary lifestyle. I did so because my blood glucose had crept into T2 territory after years of dancing with the devil, "high fructose corn syrup". That and the near constant M&M drip line that sat on my office desk all day. The first couple of weeks are literal pain. There is definitely a carb withdrawal period.
Avatar f tn I have been going in every 2 weeks since I was 4 weeks pregnant and I live hour and half away from OB. I am so counting the days down tell my c-section but it feels it is going slower now. How has your pregnancy been besides gestational diabetes?
1469903 tn?1286650297 Of all the patients with diabetes, only approximately 10% of the patients have type 1 diabetes and the remaining 90% have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes was also referred to as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), or adult onset diabetes mellitus (AODM). In type 2 diabetes, patients can still produce insulin, but do so relatively inadequately for their body's needs, particularly in the face of insulin resistance as discussed above.
Avatar n tn Hello :) Im 14 and i have had type 1 diabetes for nearly 10 years and i recently got an insulin pump about 5 months ago and have noticed that where I used to give myself injections has flattened out a bit....i also used to have about 5 injections a day and was taking novo rapid actrapid protophane and lantus.
Avatar m tn That is terribly dangerous both for you and the baby. You could easily go into diabetic ketosis and coma at that level. How are you doing now? I hope your blood sugars are much lower. Are you still pregnant? What is your A1C now? Have you had any scans?
1436324 tn?1283702360 For better or worse there are many people with Type 2 diabetes who ignore it completely and think it won't go away. Then there are people who manage it on a daily basis and successfully control their blood sugars. The ways to control type 2 diabetes is with change of diet (reduction of carbs), weight loss if necessary, exercise, and, if necessary, medication. Medication is not the enemy, and if it is needed can help control your blood sugar.
Avatar f tn If there is it probably is not specific to Type 1 because there are too few of us. It would be either a general Diabetes facility (with more Type 2's than 1's) or a weight loss facility that had a nurse or diabetic educator on staff that could monitor you and adjust the regimen to your requirements. The latter is the most likely. I unfortunately don't know of such a place. I would start your search by asking your doctor or endo.
Avatar n tn The interferon kills the pancreus and causes diabetes. My husband went on interferon and developed Type 1 diabetes. The doctor did not recognize the symptoms as he became sicker and sicker. He ended up in the hospital with blood sugar over 600! He was in a coma for 10 days. Eight years later he is now a type 1 diabetic with hepatits C. Read the insert on your interferon packet. It clearly says it may cause Type 1 diabetes.
Avatar n tn I need help understanting Ketosis, I'm 35 and I have type 2 diabetes, my blood sugar was 100 and I did a test for ketons and I seem to have a trace, is this a problem?

Avatar n tn I am a type 2 diabetic--non-medicated. I had breakfast, Honey Oats, at 10:00am and tested my blood sugar at noon, with a result of 281, which I have not seen before. What do I need to do? Thank you.
Avatar n tn ) for about 2 years before I figured this out! I went on a Low-Carb diet and in 3 days, my PVC's had totally stopped....not a one!! I thought I must be having a good day but they didn't come back (for 2 months).....not until I decided to eat some pizza one night. About a day and a half later, the PVC's started back and I had them for about a day to a day and a half. I thought that was unusal to just come back out of the blue and then stop again.
Avatar n tn The weight loss is great but... Both husband and self are on 100 mg per evening. He has lost 10 pounds in a month and I am down 18 in 2 months.
Avatar n tn For example, a breakfast of a yummy donut doesn't sustain a person as long as a bowl of whole grain cereal, but may have more calories and may cause the person to crave another meal quicker than the slower-digested whole grains. Of course it is possible that she is one of the somewhat new phenomenon of type 2 children -- weight gain can mean poorer insulin absorption.
233616 tn?1312790796 Plus, most folks who do follow it don't end up advancing from type 2 to type 1 diabetes so for my money that's worth the price of admission alone. If you haven't read it, it's called "the Zone" by Dr. Barry Sears, and it's been around for 20 years so lots of time to see the results. There are good forums full of Zoners to help folks get going with it as well.
Avatar m tn doctors said dis is inborn and i want 2 know whether dis will affect d next child...plss help..and i want 2 know d details of cause of her death...pls someone help..i just want 2 know whether this will effect their next child...
Avatar n tn Maintaining an ideal body weight and an active lifestyle may prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes Go to the emergency room or call the local emergency number (such as 911) if symptoms of ketoacidosis occur: Increased thirst and urination, Nausea, Deep and rapid breathing, Abdominal pain, Sweet-smelling breath or loss of consciousness. You should have your doctor check this out if it persists before any of the above occurs.
Avatar f tn I am not taking any new medication. I have type 2 diabetes which is under control. Could it be the material in the replacement causing the odor? This discussion is related to Bad Body Smell !!!.
534785 tn?1329595808 my mom is starting to develop thyroid disease (looks like Hashimoto's due to her slightly elevated thyroid antibody results), she has arthritis (we don't know if it's RA), and she has terrible environmental allergies, as do my siblings and I. Some of my maternal aunts have thyroid disease, and my paternal grandfather had diabetes, which my father looks like he's developing, too. My MRI is clean for MS, so I don't think my neurologist is worried about this.
649848 tn?1534637300 (Some people in these groups might actually benefit from the keto diet, but the majority of people in these groups might have an adverse effect, and you especially don't want to mess around with growing fetuses or children when long term implications are unknown, and apparently breastfeeding while on the keto diet can in some rare cases result in ketoacidosis, which is very, very bad.) 2.) Long term effects from an extended time in ketosis.
Avatar n tn I was on it when I was 18-21 and lost 75 lbs. Well of course I got prego and gained the weight back. Avatar n tn I have herd this riduclous statement so many times in my life I find it disturbing. I am Type 1 diabetic I am thirty years old, and I devoloped diabetes at nineteen and since then if I had a dime for everytime some moron told me , "Diabetes...you are too young for that. , "Diabetes? Only the elderly get that." , "If you are getting diabtes at your age you need to take better care of yourself,. "Honey it can'tbe diabetes, only old people get that.
Avatar n tn I have recent diagnosis of Diabetes 2 and am also concerned about my urine. I will be talking in a non-technical manner because I do not have a medical background at all. There appears to be small circles of "fat" or?? floating and the color is always moderately darker than what I am used to. Wtih mdeication, my blood glucose levels have dropped markedly to the 110 to 135 range. I was told that I might have kidney damage due to one reading on my last comprehensive blood test.
Avatar n tn If you can, push your carbs lower and lower until you gradually get to 50 carbs or less per day. We could probably stop type 2 diabetes in its tracks in this country if this is the only change people made in their diets. I've been on an essentially zero-carb diet for several years (zero carb meaning 5 grams of carbs or less per day), and prior to that time was on Atkins (about 50-75 grams carbs per day) for 15 years.
Avatar n tn The protein levels will keep you satiated and the ketosis will dull your appetite. Drinks lots of water and other no-calorie fluids. FWIW, I've been a low-carb eater for almost 20 years. I also practice IF (intermittent fasting). And I've pretty much been in ketosis the entire time. There's nothing unhealthy about it. I don't follow this particular plan: my plan contains higher levels of fat because I work out pretty strenuously.
1068689 tn?1325830806 Hi my name is coit and I don't know what this medicene is, because i'm not a doctor, but if the medicine you are taking now raises you're BG to that high level I would stop the medication imediatly and contact you're doctor, you're blood glucose leveles should never be that high even if you are type one or two diabetic.
