1469903 tn?1286650297 There are two major types of diabetes, called type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes was also called insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), or juvenile onset diabetes mellitus. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas undergoes an autoimmune attack by the body itself, and is rendered incapable of making insulin. Abnormal antibodies have been found in the majority of patients with type 1 diabetes. Antibodies are proteins in the blood that are part of the body's immune system.
Avatar f tn Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease of absolute or inadequate production of the pancreas, and/ or the body’s resistance to insulin. It is a long term and a lifetime illness that is projected to be the second debilitating disease, causing most of the world’s mortality and morbidity. DM itself does not necessarily cause life threatening scenarios but its complications do.

One of the liver's functions is release glycogen in the blood stream so I'm wondering if HCV can predispose one to diabetes? Thanks for your help.
Avatar m tn Both diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus fall into this realm but both are separate mechanisms. This forum deals mostly with type 2 diabetes, people who have high blood sugar levels [mellitus]. Diabetes insipidus is kidney related. For best answers, the forum to post on is Kidney Disease & Disorders.
Avatar f tn In chronic hepatitis C, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus are more often seen than in healthy controls or chronic hepatitis B patients. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection promotes insulin resistance, mainly by increased TNF production together with enhancement of suppressor of cytokine (SOC-3); both events block PI3K and Akt phosphorylation.
Avatar m tn Hello, (moved from the diabetes type II forum) I have always drunk more water than others and have become curious as to whether I have partial diabetes insipidus. Recently I have been monitoring my daily water intake. It is usually around 3.5 litres, though if I exercise more it will be around 4 litres or even above; the temperature here is moderate so I do not believe I am sweating excessively.

Avatar f tn In previous years, when we did not limit the type of food our remission rate was 15%-25%. We were able to increase the remission rate to 50-70% by using a low-carbohydrate high-protein diet. (Remission refers to no further need for insulin.) Antech Diagnostic News, December 2003: In one study, 68% of cats with diabetes mellitus fed a carbohydrate-restricted canned diet lost the need for exogeneous insulin.
Avatar m tn Islet cell transplantation, which has been used experimentally to treat type 1 diabetes, places cells from an organ donor into the pancreas of a person with type 1 diabetes. Islets are cells found in clusters throughout the pancreas. The islets themselves contain beta cells, which make insulin, the hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy.

Avatar n tn Dante suffers from Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) also known as Type 1 Diabetes or Juvenile Diabetes. IDDM is an AUTOIMMUNE disease that destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce the hormone insulin which is required to metabolize glucose (blood sugar) and provide energy for cells in the body. People afflicted with IDDM produce no insulin whatsoever. Approximately one million people in the United States suffer from IDDM.
Avatar f tn Serum levels of vitamin D have been found to be significantly lower in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, undifferentiated connective tissue disease, and type-1 diabetes mellitus than in the healthy population. In addition, it was also found that lower levels of vitamin D were associated with higher disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.
921323 tn?1268679412 Put the money towards the health costs of the uninsured. Or, use it to fund research in diabetes, heart disease, or any of the other countless complications of obesity. But is it too early to admit defeat? If we had done the same for cholesterol medications or diabetes medications, or even smoking patches and pills, we’d be paying for it in countless ways. So is there something unique about developing medications for obesity?
Avatar f tn In studies including a significant number of diabetic patients [5,7] diabetes mellitus has also been associated with retinopathy. Furthermore, improvement of retinopathy is delayed in hypertensive and diabetic patients after ending treatment [7]. This relationship emphasizes that IFN-induced retinopathy can result from physiopathological mechanisms in common with other retinopathies related to microvascular abnormalities.
Avatar f tn I am a type 2 diabetic that SVRrd. Although I had a slow response during the first treatment, the second time I cleared relatively early, and went on to achieve sustained viral response. I think part of the misunderstanding here is that some members on this board have become obsessed by insulin resistance, and look at it as if it were a panacea to HCV treatment; but it doesn’t *preclude* SVR; it’s only another hurdle to jump on the path.
233616 tn?1312790796 Our data suggest that the potentially deleterious effects of metformin to AD patients may be avoided by using it in combination with insulin; the combination may result in a beneficial effect in treating both type 2 [diabetes mellitus] and in mitigating AD progression," the researchers write. AD expert Michal S.

Diabetes mellitus may worsen or develop. --------------------------------- Other studies are now looking into the relationship between the metabolic syndrome and the virus itself and how treatment might help type 2 diabetes. Again, nothing cut and dry regarding the HCV virus and how it affects us.

Avatar m tn In a cross-sectional survey including 9841 persons, Mehta et al found that HCV-positive persons who were older than 40 years had an increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus higher than 3 times compared with persons without HCV-infection Insulin resistance is the main pathogenic factor in the development of steatosis in chronic hepatitis C, both viral insulin resistance and metabolic insulin resistance could be implied in the development of steatosis.
Avatar n tn Thyroid antibodies may occur in organ-specific autoimmune diseases, including pernicious anemia, Addison's disease, type I diabetes mellitus , polyglandular endocrine failure syndromes, Sjögren syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and pernicious anemia, idiopathic thyroid atrophy, De Quervain's thyroiditis - transiently, 7% of males, and 15-20% of females without thyroid disease.
Avatar n tn So I wouldn't rely on anything a GP said about diabetes. If I want information about diabetes (I have type 1, autoimmune diabetes), I ask my ENDOCRINOLOGIST. Not a GP. Questions I might ask my GP include: a) Hey, does this look infected? or b) Can I have a referral? Uh, yeah, that's about it.
Avatar n tn My results came back: ANA screen = positive (out of range) and negative (reference range). The antinuclear antibodies were <1:40 titer. The reference range for this test was: <1:40 = negative; 1:40 - 1:80 = low antibody level, >1:80 = elevated antibody level. The comment under the results was: A positive ANA-EIA screen associated with a negative ANA-IFA result may suggest the possibility of clinically significant antibodies or non-specific antibodies.

Avatar n tn A short-term regimen (a week or so) is usually tolerated fairly well, but longer than that puts you in a position where your dog is flirting with developing diabetes mellitus, Cushing's Disease, pancreatitis, or several other problems. By doing bloodwork at least twice during the two months he's being treated you can keep track of how his system is tolerating the steroids. Weaning him off at the earliest sign of problems would be possible if you're keeping track of how he's responding.
