Tussionex is the strongest cough medicine you can get, and it has quite a street value due to the opiate content. It's pretty stout stuff along with the antihistamine. So yeah, you've got a little opiate withdrawal along with the antihistamine rebound that el_em mentioned. No fun for a few days and you probably won't sleep well for a few nights, but you'll get through it.
Most docs don't prescribe tussionex for more than a short-term cough.
im am addicted to this and hycodan at the same timw for about 3 years i take about a 1 1/2 to 2 ounces of tussionex a day i have drank 3 and 4 ounces in a day many times with ease thought and put any where from 2 tsp to a whole ounce in sprit and i never dont have a cup i also take klodipin i take 2 to 4 mgs a day and take at least 100mg of lortab about ten 10mgs a day but sometimes it does reach up to 20 tens a day plus the cough syrups how bad is my withdrawl for the codiene going to be i
until I was diagnosed with arthritis in my lower back - well as luck would have it I was prescribed Vicodin with has the same crap in it as the cough medicine Tussionex had. Well long story short I have finally come to my senses and gave it all up. I can do it...but man oh man this withdrawal is really terrible....
The diagnosis, establishment of cause and the treatment of chronic cough can be most difficult. Tussionex® (hydrocodone bitartrate and chlorpheniramine maleate) is a potent cough-suppressant. There is no significant drug interaction between it and the Adalat® (nifedipine). Your concern about the use of a narcotic is appropriate. This is an addictive narcotic. It suppresses cough but does not address the specific cause of an individual's cough.
Does anyone know anything about this cough syrup.?it is supposedly time released and I don't how that works. What is the deal with this stuff everyone says it's very dangerous but no one says why.
ve been given every cough suppressant from tussionex to robotussin with codine, to no avail. The cough only stops for a few hours once i'm so exhausted that i fall asleep for a few hours. I've had a CT (for elevated DDimer) and a chest xray within the past week, both clean. I'm now to the point where my normal breaths wheeze on the way in and out, and even if i try to breath through my nose, i still make wheezing. I'm clear so far as pertussis.

That's absolutely horrible. I'm so sorry to hear about what is going on with your hubby. Go see your doctor and ask your doctor to give you a cough medication and the name of it is Tussionex suspense. It's amazing it does have a hard narcotic in it but it will definitely stop the cough in its tracks. My hubby takes it and we call it Liquid Gold here at our house. It's amazing. Good luck. If you prove not to have asthma, aren’t smoking and didn’t have whooping cough,you should contact your doctor and request a prescription for a strong cough suppressant You could try an over-the-counter cough suppressant with “DM” and if that doesn’t provide relief of the cough, then call or visit your doctor to make sure that nothing more serious is causing your cough (you may need a chest X-ray to do that) and get a stronger cough preparation such as Tussionex.
Over the counter meds do nothing. My doctor gave me cough syrup (Tussionex) that seems to have losened everything up. I'm also on Benzonatate. It all seems to be helping, but now my nose has a constant feeling of needing to sneeze. I should not have driven myself to the doctor. It was that bad. My head was pounding, I was getting dizzy, and I felt like I was going to pass out at any minute. I can only wonder if this is a severe allergy because it only happens in the winter.
Thank you for your comments, Dr. It was only that one incident (thank goodness) - personally, I do think it was the Tussionex. I am much better - except for the residual cough. It's pretty much non-productive but hanging on. Others who have had this cold say the same thing. I've been taking honey and drinking lots of warm/hot liquids.
If I knew that the first Tylenol 3 (codeine) I took would nearly destroy my life, I would have never taken it. There's no harm in taking cough medicine as directed. Chasing the high will ruin your life.
I am hopefully going to start treatment AGAIN for tussionex withdrawal and treatment. Pray for me. Any suggestions or any other people out there like me? I am so alone.
A neck and chest X-Rays were done, nothing. We have tried every cough medicine/home treatment you can name and they are not even taking the edge off. We went to an ENT today and he was just as baffled. He did a scope and said throat and vocal cords were normal. Ears were squeaky clean. We left today so discourage because it took two weeks to even see him and now he is referring us to a Pulmonary Doctor, who knows how long that will take. Has anyone heard of this before?
I had the same symptoms and thats what my pharmacist said i could take. Lemon honey cough drops will work best to soothe your cough but any kind of cough drops are safe. Only take sudafed for up to 3 days, if your not getting better after that, your doctor will have to prescribe something safe for you to take. Hope yoy feel better soon!
