Tussionex cough suppressant

Common Questions and Answers about Tussionex cough suppressant

tussionex

Avatar n tn This cough syrup combines an anti-histamine (chlorpheniramine) with a codeine-like cough suppressant called hydrocodone. Tussionex stops coughing well, but it carries a risk of potential side effects, including drowsiness, constipation, lightheadedness, and vomiting. The hydrocodone component is also an addictive medication and should be used with caution.
Avatar n tn The diagnosis, establishment of cause and the treatment of chronic cough can be most difficult. Tussionex® (hydrocodone bitartrate and chlorpheniramine maleate) is a potent cough-suppressant. There is no significant drug interaction between it and the Adalat® (nifedipine). Your concern about the use of a narcotic is appropriate. This is an addictive narcotic. It suppresses cough but does not address the specific cause of an individual's cough.
Avatar n tn If you prove not to have asthma, aren’t smoking and didn’t have whooping cough, you should contact your doctor and request a prescription for a strong cough suppressant You could try an over-the-counter cough suppressant with “DM” and if that doesn’t provide relief of the cough, then call or visit your doctor to make sure that nothing more serious is causing your cough (you may need a chest X-ray to do that) and get a stronger cough preparation such as Tussionex.
Avatar n tn ve been given every cough suppressant from tussionex to robotussin with codine, to no avail. The cough only stops for a few hours once i'm so exhausted that i fall asleep for a few hours. I've had a CT (for elevated DDimer) and a chest xray within the past week, both clean. I'm now to the point where my normal breaths wheeze on the way in and out, and even if i try to breath through my nose, i still make wheezing. I'm clear so far as pertussis.
Avatar n tn sober 20+ years in 12 step program. Take Tussionex for chronic cough, 1 tsp. per day. I don't abuse it by taking more. But, if I don't take it every day I start to feel like I am getting the flu. Is that withdrawal, just the level in my blood is dropping off after 24 hours? Would appreciate anyone's input, especially if you have experience. Thanks and bless you all. One day at a time, because that's all we've got.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know anything about this cough syrup.?it is supposedly time released and I don't how that works. What is the deal with this stuff everyone says it's very dangerous but no one says why.
Avatar f tn My addiction started around 1 1/2 to 2 years ago when I had a chronic cough and was given Tussionex - wow how I loved that stuff. It totally stopped my coughing and made you feel great. I took that stuff for heck months...until I was diagnosed with arthritis in my lower back - well as luck would have it I was prescribed Vicodin with has the same crap in it as the cough medicine Tussionex had. Well long story short I have finally come to my senses and gave it all up. I can do it...

Avatar n tn If the medication is strictly for cough from collapsing trachea, or kennel cough than any cough suppressant should be effective. Prescription cough suppressants are usually human preparations that contain codeine or hydrocodone. Many of these are available in combination with an anti-histamine in a cough syrup and some are in tablet form. Your vet can give you a prescription of one that is appropriate for your dog's condition and the medication can be filled at a human pharmacy.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your comments, Dr. It was only that one incident (thank goodness) - personally, I do think it was the Tussionex. I am much better - except for the residual cough. It's pretty much non-productive but hanging on. Others who have had this cold say the same thing. I've been taking honey and drinking lots of warm/hot liquids.
973741 tn?1342342773 I listened to a pod cast and they highly recommended using brown or dark honey as a cough suppressant and said it worked better than OTC cough medicine we buy and take. I know you can't give honey to kiddos under 1 but has anyone ever tried this for a cough with success?
Avatar m tn I'm in my 19th week of triple tx for 48 weeks, now all of a sudden I have this persistent cough! It keeps my husband and I wake, once I start coughing I can't stop. Is this ANOTHER side effect. I did take some cough drops but they didn't help much, plus they burned the He** out of my mouth. Anybody have any suggestions?
Avatar f tn A small dose of plain rubitosin is ok, the one that has cough suppressant only, and halls cough drops
1003776 tn?1360197582 once there was a little girl, or lady that had been diagnosed with chronic broncitis and chronic cough. This was often helped by the prescription given to her by her loving doctor, it was tussionex. After having this problem for years, one year, 2009 in January, this lady's illness was much worse than ever before. So the tussionex was prescribed again and again and again, hoping that after many tests, the problem would be solved and she could come off the tussionex.
Avatar f tn I just had that virus too and you will want to take a suppressant to help reduce how much you cough.....a cold or virus can trigger symptoms to increase as can stress from our daily lives.....anything can cause the symptoms to change. Do you have a true Chiari specialist that you are seeing? Have you had a recent MRI?
286124 tn?1214938528 wow!!! now thats a word i havent heard of in years, tussionex... what do you mean "back you up?

Avatar f tn I am hopefully going to start treatment AGAIN for tussionex withdrawal and treatment. Pray for me. Any suggestions or any other people out there like me? I am so alone.
636562 tn?1223667445 I recently had a bad reaction to Tussionex Suspension and had to go to the ER. I agree with the doctor that I had a reaction to the Tussionex, but I'm wondering why it affected me so long after I initially took it (I didn't have any symptoms for the first 7-8 hours). I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I thought a pharmacist would be the best one to answer my question. How do extended release medications work?
Avatar m tn s when it can fester and become a secondary bacterial infection (bronchitis, sinusitis). For a cough, I use Delsom which is an otc cough suppressant. But coughs are usually actually a good thing as the reason for it is to move congestion through your system. Don't move it? That's again when secondary bacterial infections can happen. I personally take ibuprofen or tylenol, drink lots of nice tea, take my mucinex, maybe some honey and rest. That gets me through most viruses.
Avatar m tn hi, how do u feel on days when u don't take it besides the cough? I know for me, when i finally stopped taking vicodin totally, i did have a cough & learned that the vicodin was actually a cough suppressant so it was a common w/d effect. I don't know if it is the same with the oxy.
