i have been bipolar for 20 years. i was taken off lithium 2 yrs ago because it was affecting my lithium--then i had a psychotic break and was hospitalized for over 8 wks. since then no meds have worked well for me and i was started on ect which has continued at intervals, now once every 2 wks. i feel the ect is helping me but is destroying my memory, both short and long term. now the doc wants to put me back on low dose lithium along with a med to protect my kidneys and monitor them closely.
s common or uncommon but its not rare. Trileptal is similar clinically but better in one way in that the blood test is not required. I found that lithium worked well but had some trouble tolerating it for other reasons that were physical but did very well on Lamictal especially on rapid cycling. Each person reacts diffferently though. Speak to your psychiatrist about what is going on and if other options might be considered.
what are the positive aspect of using tegetrol as opposed to Li when lithium is not longer tolerated?

t do a blood test for Abilify for blood levels but they can with lithium. Trileptal unlike Tegretol or lithium does not generally require a blood test. Abilify is used as a mood stabilizer but its an antipsychotic as for its original use. You need to find out what his diagnosis is, how the medications were benefiting him and where the side effects might be coming from. I have tried so many diffrent meds and none seem to work however they all have the side effects I cannot stand, I took lithium and it made me super sick I lost 9 pounds in 4 days. with depokote all I did was sleep and feel like a dead head I am trying tegretol now and I am so bitchy seriously every one hates me even me. Even as I am being grouchy I feel like I should shut up but I cant and my muscles are so sore. Any one on a med that they love and would like to recomend?

I have Bipolar 2 , PTSD , Panic Disorder and have Borderline Personality Disorder . I have more depression than mania. I was on Depakote 1000 mg a day . I felt pretty good but gained so much weight , which caused me to have prediabetes .I was changed to Lamictal which caused huge allergic reactions ! I just started Trileptal 300 mg twice a day. It's causing anxiety , but I also take Ativan . I seem to have more energy .
He wants to put me on Lithium, but it scare the heck out of me. There are a number of possible side effects, one being weight gain. I just got my weight under control and don't want to balloon back up. --- I like the place I am right now mentally. I feel good about myself..., but I know in the next day or two I will sink into the depths of hell. ---We also talked about moving my Lamictal up to 600mg per day? -- What do you think?
tegretol is supposedly the safest among the 3 classical drugs for BP. the other 2 are lithium and valproex. Tegretal is not used much in the USA because of drug interactions and sometimes replaced by it's weaker cousin trileptal. i tried it myself 2 years ago but couldn't tolerate because of the headaches it caused me. However i assume it's better than the other 2.

I am in Canada, I am on Lithium (and yes, gained a ton of weight). I am still on it cause it worked. Now, my new pdoc added Lamictal to it, and quite frankly, it is only ok to me. I haven't been on it long enough to give a full opinion. I just went up to 75 mg last night.
Now, I find the lithium has worn off it's good use....I still feel manic while on it and depressed while on Lamictal (which my pdoc assures me ....that Lamictal cures depression).

lamictal and trileptal do affect birth control pills and vise verse i.e. you can get pregnant using these as they reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills by 40%to 50% ,,,,,,,,,,also (which done me a great harm) the birth control pills reduce the effect of BP meds up to 50% also.
i read on some site (but i cannot remember which) that birth control pills can affect most of psychiatric meds.
t say which is best to use but Lamictal was the most effective for me as well as other people and generally used more than the others. Trileptal unlike Tegretol (which its clinically similar to) does not require a blood test. Neurontin and Topomax don't but they are generally used as adjuncts. I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason.
You do need a working mood stabilizer. Just ask about a different one. Tegretol isn't used quite as much now due to side effects. Trileptal has mostly replaced it because they are almost identical but Trileptal doesn't have certain side effects so they don't need to do blood tests. The 3 standards are lithium, Depakoate and Lamictal.
Yes right now I am taking lithium and trileptal. I was on lamictal and trileptal but had to switch to lithium as my insurance allowance for medication has run out and lamictal and trileptal costs about $500.00 per month. Befor the month is out I'll have to go to lithium and depakote until I can figure something else out.
