Trileptal for neuralgia

Common Questions and Answers about Trileptal for neuralgia

trileptal

Avatar m tn Thanks for your info on how Trileptal works for Tregeminal Neuralgia. I would be interested to see how it works with other people as well, in place of Carbamazapine and Gabapentin so I have some ammunition when I see my neurologist. I don't think Gabapentin is doing much if anything for me, I am currently taking 2700 mg per day in addition to Carbamazapine.
738075 tn?1330575844 I have been dealing with it for years. It is controlled for the most part with the usual meds(trileptal, lyric, ect.) I have never fully known if my TN attacks were a exacerbation of MS? However when they got hospital bad steroids did work for me just a little slow to help. On the last trip to the hospital a nurse that knew MS very well talked me into asking the Dr. for Toradol. They gave me a infusion(sorry didn't take down the dose was busy hurting) but the pain went away fast.
645390 tn?1338555377 Usually it goes away in about 2-3 days, but not this time. I think it is trigeminal neuralgia, have had it off and on for many years, but it has taken a huge change for the worse lately. I thought it was improving, but I was wrong. It is the right side of the middle of my face, and gives off shooting pain towards the middle of my cheekbone, and then also above that going towards my eye. My skin hurts SO bad.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. When I first started taking trileptal the pain completely went away and I was sure I was cured. But only within three weeks I was woken up with the same pain again, though not as severe as before. The pain has made all my top left teeth extremely sensitive which is normal with the condition but now, the left side of my palate is also swollen. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the neuralgia or not.
Avatar m tn t travel along the traditional path of the trigeminal nerve but the treatment is the same. I took Trileptal for my face pain until I had an allergic reaction. It did wonders. There are other drugs available too.
Avatar f tn Hi, I was put on Trileptal for the TN. It did relieve it somewhat. What helped the most being on the steroids, and about a week later most of my symptoms improved. I would call your doc and ask if there is another med that might help you even more. Sorry you are going through this, I know how awful it is.
Avatar f tn Has anyone ever been prescribed Baclofen for migraines and facial neuralgia?
Avatar f tn While not curable, many people find long term pain relief through medications, or surgeries, or alternatives such as Accupuncture. I am unfamiliar with the drug you mentioned. Is it an anti-seizure medication? Most doctors give Tegretol, Trileptal, or gabapentin, anti-seizure drugs used "off label" for Trigeminal neuralgia.
Avatar f tn I have typical Trigeminal Neuralgia and had a Gamma Knife treatment 6 months ago. I was told to begin weaning off my medication (Trileptal). Since reducing the medication by 150 mg, I am once again experiencing TN pain triggered by chewing, talking, washing my face, etc. Is this normal when weaning off anti-seizure medications used for TN?
Avatar f tn TN pain is usually controlled by anti-convulsant drugs such as Tegretol, Gabapentin, or Trileptal among others. Morphine is usually prescribed for Trigeminal Neuropathic pain -- similar but a more constant type of pain. If your TN is caused by the tumors, removing them may resolve the pain for you. But your doctors would be able to answer that question.
2047903 tn?1330187549 My neuro ordered the typical blood tests for the disorders that mimic MS: lupus, Lyme's, B12, sarcoidosis etc. All have come back negative. So I guess the UBOs in my periventricular and deep white matter, subcortical, as well as the brainstem and cerebellum are a mystery. Today is the day I " up" my dose of Trileptal to get relief from this trigeminal neuralgia. Looks like a groggy weekend is ahead!I just wish I had some closure on what is going on right now.
233622 tn?1279334905 I have been on Tegretol for about 14 years...firstly for seizure control, secondly for pain management for Paratrigeminal Neuralgia (which differs from trigeminal neuralgia). I was intrigued by this drug when I saw your post so I looked into it. The following is copied and pasted from a website explaining anti-seizure meds... "The seizure control abstained with Trilepital is as good and in some situations better than with Tegretol.
Avatar m tn When she was almost done with the medicine she started having facial pain on the same side of ear infection. Has had MRI and taken meds for the neuralgia to no avail. Seeing Neurologist tomorrow. My question is why did an ear infection cause this? Could it be a vascular compression problem? That would be the easiest to fix with long term results.
233622 tn?1279334905 I TOOK MY MEDICATION FOR TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA AND I AM ACTUALLY GETTING SOME RELIEF! I AM SO AMAZED,, AND HAPPY!! I WAS TOLD IF IT IS TRULY TN THAT I HAVE THE MEDICATION WOULD WORK QUICKLY. I GUESS THAT IS ONE MORE QUESTION I CAN MARK OFF OF MY LIST! AND I WAS SUCH A CHICKEN THINKING ABOUT TAKING THIS MEDICATION..............
2047903 tn?1330187549 I called my current neuro to see if it was a side effect/reaction to Trileptal which I take for trigeminal neuralgia. I finally got a call back from him 3 days later. He says it could or could not be related to the medicine, but basically said to deal with it because the medicine seems to be helping some. My MRI showed lesions and the report states the lesions are consistent with MS. I have symptoms but they are subtle (except for the trigeminal neuralgia...that is far from subtle!
378497 tn?1232143585 Unfortunately , my neuro said it will most likely return since I also experience TN and am on Trileptal for it. My pain started at the exact point yours did and followed the same path. Actually, I'll take the TN over the occipital neuralgia any day. I hope yours passes soon.
Avatar f tn i believe that i have trigeminal neuralgia but i do not know what tests are done to confrim this . can you tell me what tests have to be done so i can ask my physician to ruin these tests or demand they run them ? i have been so sick for so long . i literally have been to 25 -30 doctors to find out what is wrong with me . and every test comes back negative except that a test came back positve for fungal aspergillosis .but they do not say anything about treating it .
Avatar f tn But I continued to exercise, I just listened to my body and modified where needed. Always talk to your doctor and make sure there is not a medical reason for curtailing exercise. Another item to share is that there are success stories. There are people who are pain-free and med-free. Never give up hope!
Avatar f tn I was told by my PCP and 2 neuros that the drug of choice for TN is Tegretol or Trileptal. Have they tried prescribing that yet? I used Trileptal for awhile and it worked well but I had to stop due to side effects. I think you might need to add another drug since it neuropathic pain and it seems that 2 drugs have a synergistic effect. Have you read the Health page on neuropathic pain? I hope you get some relief from the zaps...there are so annoying and painful!
Avatar m tn t be tempted to part with money for a treatment for her -to date there are no known cures for MS and no AT's that hold up under scientific review. We're happy to answer any questions you might have. Good luck to your relative.
1108262 tn?1273179266 DOES ANY ONE TAKE TRILEPTAL FOR BIPOLAR ??? IF SO HOW MUCH AND FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING IT??
787406 tn?1339203183 Glad the Orajel works for you. Didn't for me but everyone is different. I live for my rice/lavender bean bag. I've made the sock ones and others for back up, small versions. Those eye masks work wonders also, they fit in the palm of your hand and are the right size for a cheek, hardly noticeable when you are out somewhere and need it.
Avatar n tn - offered clinical diagnosis of glossopharyngeal neuralgia; currently using medication - have tried tegretol, trileptal, amitryptiline without much success neurosurgeon: suggests vascular decompression of 8-9 (glossopharyngeal) nerve bundle.
10947 tn?1281404252 That you opened this new forum on the day I was diagnosed is amazing. I was searching for other individuals with this condition and there experiences with medication. Actually, the neurologist suggested that I have "atypical" trigeminal neuralgia. My MRI is scheduled for next week to rule out other problems, etc.
Avatar m tn I have had TN (Trigeminal Neuralgia) now for about 17 years. Sharp stabbing pain at times right side of face, usually centered around upper right teeth/top of lip/bottom of nose area. Have had two Gamma Knife procedures done 10/05 and then 10/08 after pain had returned early '08. Pain has returned this spring and continues. Recent MRI shows no changes from before.
