Trileptal for mood stabilizer

Common Questions and Answers about Trileptal for mood stabilizer

trileptal

1134609 tn?1269272200 Klonopin is an anti-anxiety medication used as a mood stabilizer. Clinically in general the most effective mood stabilizer is lithium but each person reacts differently to each medication. Seroquel causing mania is rare. My experience with mood stabilizers was different from yours because I responded very well to Lamictal and Seroquel (which is an antipsychotic used as a mood stabilizer). What I take now is in Phase II FDA study so they are still researching it.
Avatar f tn Trileptal is an anticonvulsant (used as a mood stabilizer for bipolar), and Lexapro is an antidepressant called an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). If you are having problems with mania you might want to talk to your doctor about adding an antipsychotic. There are so many too many to list and there can be so many different combinations too. You should talk to your doctor about the specific symptoms you are having...
Avatar m tn I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason. The mood stabilizer I take now Clonidine is rarely used because it can cause depression and its a blood pressure medication in its original use with the potential of some severe side effects. I don't believe the medication Lovaza requires blood tests but like the rest of the mood stabilizers that would be listed its use as a mood stabilizer is experimental.
Avatar f tn It actually worked out pretty well. I told my doctor what was going on, and that I couldn't take the Tegretol any more. It came out that it was a misunderstanding why she'd had me on it for so long. Abilify is my mood stabilizer.
Avatar n tn Trileptal is an anti-convulant that is prescribed as a mood stabilizer but it can be less than effective (although each person responds differently to each medication). Abilify is specifically FDA approved for both mood disorders and psychotic disorders. If a person has a mood disorder that would have any type of psychosis as part of it they would most likely need an antipsychotic.
585414 tn?1288941302 Its important that when people run out of standard mood stabilizers that some of the remaining choices do have potential side effects of concern, especially personality alterations. That's why some of them aren't often used. I've been through every mood stabilizer. Could detail but it would go on for pages. But after the common ones proved intolerable Keppra caused suicidal ideations. Trileptal caused an agitated mixed state.
574118 tn?1305135284 s very reactive to hormones and that has been a huge problem. Was soooo looking forward to only one mood stabilizer... have heard that it can work for some people. I hope that you can make it work for you.
1100992 tn?1262357216 s a potential side effect of all anti-convulsants used as mood stabilizers including the one I take now) but each person responds differently to each medication although generally, side effect profile aside as it is the only medication approved as a mood stabilizer before any other usage, lithium is generally considered the most effective but individual responses vary.
Avatar n tn Abilify is the least sedating out of all the antipsychotics currently available. You could ask your psychiatrist about that. However, its less of a mood stabilizer so you might need to take one in addition and generally Lamictal is the least sedating out of the mood stabilizers in conventional use. You could speak to your psychiatrist about that as well.
925572 tn?1246540031 Trileptal is clinically similar to Tegretol but because of the way it was updated its safer and doesn't require bloodwork. For some people its a good mood stabilizer. It depends. My experience wasn't favorable but I know for some people I know it was and it would work as an adjunct to Lamictal. The side effect profile is reasonably similar to Tegretol and its effectiveness about the same. You could look it up more on the websites we have linked up or the medication website itself.
5153554 tn?1365430705 I've vented often on here. It really helps. As I've stated in other posts my son & I were just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder - he has I, I'm guessing i have I but My Pdoc did not specify, but our treatments by different docs have been similar. We both were initially on Lamictal. The first time me son stopped taking his meds, after being committed, he ended up committed again less than 3 weeks later for suicidal thoughts.
674607 tn?1240017232 It has no usage in studies as a mood stabilizer and I require a mood stabilizer as well. You can read through my journal entries for more information or pm me if you wish. Your advice is good and I didn't mean to confuse anyone. Sorry.
Avatar f tn Tegretol is a standard mood stabilizer. Its just not as used much anymore because of the fact that it can interact with antipsychotics (not dangerously, just lower their blood level) and thus in someone who needs both appear to cause psychosis (as it did with me) and of course Trileptal has generally replaced it. That information came directly from my provider so that's been standard thinking for a while but it takes some time for it to be phased in.
Avatar f tn I believe this list should have everything: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm The other ones I tried were Trileptal (which is used fairly often, its a safer version of Tegretol basically), Neurotin (which is somewhat effective) and Keppra (which for me had too many side effects which is not uncommon). Topomax can be helpful for some people. Lovaza is used experimentally as a mood stabilizer but I've never tried it.
Avatar n tn Tegretol is one of a variety of medications in potential use when lithium (which is the only medication specifically developed as a mood stabilizer) no longer is effective. This is some information on mood stabilizers in general including Tegretol: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm For some people it has an easier to tolerate side effect profile than lithium.
Avatar f tn Hi! I am on 600mg Tegretol daily for a mood stabilizer, and I live in the U.S., I'm also on Topamax for Migraines. I've been on it for a while and they are going up in dosage too slowly if you ask me! I'm a mess! But it's the way my docs have to do it I guess. I don't have s/e from the Tegretol really at all, at first I did, a bit of dizziness for the first week, then that went away. And everytime I increase in dose I get the dizziness again, but it only lasts for about a wk.
Avatar f tn im taking citalopram dont remember the mg but its a whole and a half a tab at bedtime and i also take what my doctor calls a mood stabilizer trileptal not sure what the mg is on it either but i take it 4 times daily usually two in the am and two before bed..
Avatar n tn Trileptal unlike Tegretol or lithium does not generally require a blood test. Abilify is used as a mood stabilizer but its an antipsychotic as for its original use. You need to find out what his diagnosis is, how the medications were benefiting him and where the side effects might be coming from. We have some webpages linked up where you could find out information.
397118 tn?1219762250 t have a problem with lexapro the thing is that I was gaining a lot of weight and it made me so sleepy all day long like really sleepy, now I have to be fair and say that the sleepiness could be the combo lexapro and trileptal (mood stabilizer) I was put on trileptal 4 months ago when I started sub then 3 months ago lexapro and since then I gained 15 pounds I know is not the meds fault is my mouth that puts the food but still my doctor says it could be
5032487 tn?1365824021 Hi, Ever tried topomax? It's a mood stabilizer that actually aides in weight loss. I was taking it wil seroquil because I was terrified of gaining weight. I didn't know it was going to make me lose weight- and quickly. Someone mentioned trileptal above and I have taken that before too. I just wanted to compare it to topomax- they are both anti-convulsants/ anti seizure medication. I do not know if they are both used in treating bi-polar, topomax is for sure.
574118 tn?1305135284 As to whether an adjunct mood stabilizer is needed or anything else you could discuss that with your psychiatrist as well.
1255505 tn?1272819115 is that lithium is the only medication that was first researched and developed as a primary mood stabilizer. Every other mood stabilizer was developed as another medication and used off label as a mood stabilizer and then only FDA approved for that purpose afterwards. They are finding that the anti-convulsant used for my physical disability is showing mood stabilization properties and they may potentially document that.
Avatar n tn If you are dysphoric (bitchy,) then you might need to be careful about adding an antidepressant. You may want to try adding another mood stabilizer, but probably not lamictal, because it is typically activating, and it sounds like you need more of a downer. If I were you, I might talk to my doctor about switching to Trileptal--it's like Tegretol with less side effects. I took Trileptal and Abilify for a while and it made me a nervous wreck, which I now think was from the Abilify.
Avatar f tn I have Bipolar 2 , PTSD , Panic Disorder and have Borderline Personality Disorder . I have more depression than mania. I was on Depakote 1000 mg a day . I felt pretty good but gained so much weight , which caused me to have prediabetes .I was changed to Lamictal which caused huge allergic reactions ! I just started Trileptal 300 mg twice a day. It's causing anxiety , but I also take Ativan . I seem to have more energy .
Avatar f tn You have been through all the commonly used mood stabilizers from what I am aware of unless different antipsychotics are tried as mood stabilizers as all atypical antipsychotics are FDA approved as mood stabilizers. Trileptal has worked for some people I know (its use has generally replaced Tegretol as they are clinically similar but its safer and doesn't require blood work). Topomax is generally used as an adjunct mood stabilizer. There are others as well.
1967424 tn?1325633780 ve been having mood episodes (especially manic ones), you need to start a different mood stabilizer, preferably before or while stopping the tegretol. And are you having major side effects, or are you just upset that you're still getting depressed? Major and/or intolerable side effects are the only good reason to quit fast. If it's not working well enough, a dose increase or adding something else could work.
1108262 tn?1273179266 DOES ANY ONE TAKE TRILEPTAL FOR BIPOLAR ??? IF SO HOW MUCH AND FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING IT??
585414 tn?1288941302 I am starting a new medication and although its for my physical disability its experimental for that use but its a recently FDA approved anti-convulsant Lacosimide and the reason I am posting in this forum about it is like all anti-convulsants in a certain class it can cause depression and the like.
