Is anyone on here taking Trileptal for bipolar? Any comments or results?

Some anticonvulsants do work for bipolar disorder. I don't know what they specifically treat in bipolar disorder, but if it works similar to antipsychotics in the disorder, it would probably be better to switch to an anticonvulsant rather than continue taking an antipsychotic, provided it works for you. Prolonged usage of antipsychotics can have permanent side effects, but not always.

Its possible but it could also be caused by stopping the medication to quickly - called withdraws. i would suggest to him about seeing his doctor do what ever you can to get him there and go with him and suggest your concerns.

Holiday blues can affect anyone, especially people with things like bipolar disorder. Depressive episodes I don't think are required for bipolar disorder 1 to be diagnosed and only mania is required but they frequently occur. With psychotic features just means you experience psychotic symptoms when manic and/or depressed but particularly while manic.

What are some of the medications usually prescribed for bipolar disorder?? I've been taking Trileptal 300mg and Lexapro 10mg for over six years now and I did well for a while but about seven months ago started loosing my grip on the situation again. Please reply!

is there a MH drug out there for bipolar disorder that doesn't make you gain weght?...just wondering and without a side affect?

I was on lamictal and trileptal but had to switch to lithium as my insurance allowance for medication has run out and lamictal and trileptal costs about $500.00 per month. Befor the month is out I'll have to go to lithium and depakote until I can figure something else out.

unfortunately, a lot of these meds do cause problems with weight gain. However, if you can possibly try to set yourself up on a plan (sometimes it takes forcing yourself at that beginning), to get out and walk everyday, it will help you a lot. It helps with the weight and with the mood. My son has this problem. He has bipolar schizoaffective disorder. He is on Clozaril, Effexor and Trileptal.

I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. What you should do is review Scientific American, which suggests that bi-polar disorder is the result of a specific infectious agent, and is in actuality an auto-immune disorder, rather than something caused by poor toilet training. And the good news is they have identified an organism. And there are clinical trials overseas on a drug that will counteract the affects.

I've vented often on here. It really helps. As I've stated in other posts my son & I were just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder - he has I, I'm guessing i have I but My Pdoc did not specify, but our treatments by different docs have been similar. We both were initially on Lamictal. The first time me son stopped taking his meds, after being committed, he ended up committed again less than 3 weeks later for suicidal thoughts.

I've been taking zyprexa for almost 6 months and am still suffering side effects. I get blurred vision and fogginess which makes it hard to concentrate. His neurologist recently added Trileptal to balance his levels because he was having seizures so often. His therapist also prescribed him Celexal and Elavil for depression medication due to bipolar disorder. Now it seems that the 2 anti-depressants have a side effect of seizures, which causes him to seize more than usual. Should the 4 meds be mixed, Keppra, Celexa, Elavil and Trileptal?

There is some controversy about using antidepressants such as Zoloft for someone with bipolar depression. Have you consider Lamictal (lamotrigine) or Lithium? Re: Straterra, there have been reports of Straterra causing mania. Definitely not a reason to stop abruptly, but something to discuss with your pdoc. Re: Stelazine, this medication is used for psychosis or short-term for anxiety. How long have you been taking Stelazine?

I was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder about 6 or 7 years ago. I now take Trileptal to treat it, and it has definitely improved my life. It was never something anyone, but my family or close friends were even able to detect. I have never been hospitalized as a result of the bipolar nor has it ever affected my physical health in any way. However, I am unable to acquire any health insurance because of the diagnosis.

If a person has epilepsy since they were a child and requires an anti-convulsant it should be noted that some anti-convulsants are used as mood stabilizers such as Depakoate, Trileptal, Keppra and of course Lamictal (and others) but the dosage and adjustment for bipolar would be different. Since some medications can on occassion raise the seizure threshold it would involve a close conversation between your neurologist and psychiatrist as for what medication is right for you.

Bipolar I is probably a good enough reason to be medicated in some way, since mania can be so destructive, but bipolar II with few episodes might be controllable with therapy. Depression can be quite destructive too, so the question is really how much does whatever mood disorder you have **** with your daily life, your happiness, and your ability to function?

I've suffered from depression and mild mania for most of my life (although I thought the manic part meant you were euphoric, and I don't ever remember being that happy). I had a high stress job, teen with mental issues and a husband that is frequently out to sea for weeks at a time. I went to my MD in November because I wasn't sleeping, confused and angry. He diagnosed me with major depressive disorder - put me on Lexepro & Trazadone for sleep.

There are many medications available to treat BiPolar Disorder. Some are used individually and others are used in combination with others. You can find alot of info on the Bipolar forum. It was complex for myself as a person with schizoaffective disorder or people I knew with bipolar with psychotic features as there a mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic was neccessary. With straight bipolar Seroquel being an FDA approved mood stabilizer should work at a therapeutic dose. You can see if at a proper dose you can tolerate the akathesia. Akineton does work but it is one of many side effect pills. You can see if it works for you.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was 24 years old (I know I've had it all my life I just was never taken to dr until it was sort of last resort) I've been married for the last 10 years (I am 32 years old) and from the moment that I started dating to now I've always been tormented by the idea that my husband is having an affair. I have a friend who posted a question (jigreg) about what medications you take for Bipolar Disorder. I know this question is posted a lot but he isn't getting any awswers. I gave him a few but I know I misssing tons. If everyone who reads this could just list a few meds you take or have tried it would be very helpful to him when he sees his doctor.
