Avatar n tn I may have trigeminal neuralgia in the mandibular branch. Severe pain in the lower gum area but it is on both sides which has my PC doctor, my neurolgist, my pain management dr, my neurosurgeon and my accupuncturist all baffled. Meanwhile, I am on Lyrica, which is becoming ineffective, Vicodin, which does not help much, and Ambien to knock me out at night to get some sleep. Is anyone out there who has experienced such a problem that can head me in the right direction? I am losing hope.
Avatar f tn I had an MRI scan and a CT scan which shown up a flash on the left side of my head but I was told this was nothing to worry about, it was due to my age ( I am now 45 years old ) I was refured to a pain management specialist and was prescribed Gabapentin, Amitriptylein, Tramadol and ibuprofen tablets because the specialist thinks that I may have Hemicrania Continua.
2015036 tn?1332997788 Hello, I have Multiple Sclerosis. But I also have a history of recurrent sinus infections. I have had TN on the left side of my face for close to four years. Today, I am having very similar pain in an area I know could be my trigeminal nerve- though on the right side. I don't know which doctor to see: my GP or my neurologist. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Avatar n tn I know trigeminal neuralgia is an extrememly painful condition that causes intractable pain. The pain itself can affect your driving abilities. As far as pain medications go, you need to not drive until you know how to react to the medicine. You always need to ask yourself, Am I safe to drive? If you are extremely drowsy or dizzy along with a lot of pain, driving is probably not the right thing to do.
Avatar m tn Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by frequent, excruciating paroxysms of pain in lips, gums, cheek, or chin lasting seconds to minutes. The Pain which is severe in nature, stabbing type, lasting for few seconds to minute and which has a triggering factor to it describes pain of trigeminal neuralgia. Physical examination of the patient is normal. Most patients cause is compression due to overgrowth like some tumor in its pathway. Typically presents in middle or old age.
Avatar n tn You need to be investigated for trigeminal neuralgia and temporal arteritis. Trigeminal neuralgia is a nerve disorder that causes a stabbing electric shock like pain in parts of face. Various possible causes are multiple sclerosis and pressure on the nerve from a swollen blood vessel. Pain may be triggered by touch, sounds, chewing and light touch on face. Certain blood tests, MRI brain and trigeminal reflex testing apart from a neurological examination are required.
Avatar n tn After a 2nd visit to a different er yesterday morning, the er doctor prescribed neurontin which I know is used for trigeminal neuralgia, so I am hoping after a few doses, the pain will start to ease up until she can see a neurologist.
567677 tn?1246767776 Wow, sorry, I missed this. It is a favorite topic of mine after learning a great deal about it when I had it. Trigeminal Neuralgia is literally a "pain syndrome of the Trigeminal nerve. This nerve is the 5th Cranial Nerve and supplies most of the sensation to the face. There is one on both sides. The Cranial Nerves are nerves that emerge directly out of the brain or brainstem.
Avatar m tn The pain in teeth 5 and 6 were initially diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia, however I have none of the symptoms of trigeminal, other than the pain being in the general area of the trigeminal nerve. This pain, (5 and 6) would spread in a line, #5 going up my face, through the eye socket and into the scalp. #6 would go from the tooth along my cheek and into the back of my head. I finally convinced my dentist to extract #6 and that line of pain stopped after the extraction.
Avatar m tn Hi, Thank you for your question. This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.
Avatar m tn Traumatic trigeminal neuropathy is generally not associated with trigeminal neuralgia. However, both entities may be responsive to pharmacologic intervention. Seeing a neurologist or orofacial pain specialist misadvised.
Avatar f tn I feel like a limp dish rag. I have trigeminal neuralgia, polymyalgia rheumatica, and fibromyalgia, but my doctors say it is not caused by any of them or the medications I am taking? Has anyone else experienced the same thing? What was your diagnosis? How did you treat it?
Avatar n tn By ATN -- do you mean Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia? If so, there are 5 different types of surgery. There are also medications -- mostly anti-seizure medications normally used for epilepsy -- that are used to control the pain. Problem with the drugs is, they can cause other problems (kidney/liver) and regular blood tests are necessary. A facial pain specialist is the best doctor to seek out or a neurologist.
Avatar n tn However, I had the same symptoms you were having and was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Its where one or more of the three main nerves in your face cause nerve pain, or neuralgia. The first nerve lays across the eyebrows, the second lays across your cheek bones and the third nerve lays across the chin. My doctor put me on Lyrica and Klonopin and it seems to help a little, although the pain does intensify and the pain medication does not work for it since it is nerve pain.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thank you for your question Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid. Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. Take care.

Avatar n tn Hi, The common causes of shooting pains on right side of head are trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, tension headaches etc.In trigeminal neuralgia there are successive bouts of face pain. This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head.
Avatar f tn I have been going to the doctor for several years for sinusitis, then I began to have facial pain. After several different doctors, I was told that I had trigeminal neuralgia as well as a deviated septum. I eventually had laser surgery for the trigeminal neuralgia, but the a facial pain continues. The nerve pain has subsided, but I continue to have facial pain on my left side. The pain seems to get worse if I lean my head to that side.
