Avatar m tn Are there painkillers for dogs that are safe? Tramadol caused my 11 year old chow chow Emily to have seizures after two days 4 pills and the Rimadyl side effects I just read here are equally as bad. Both were give to her by her vet of six years. If anyone has any ideas please contact me at ***@****. Thank you.
442658 tn?1563386491 That's funny you say that because I was walking my two dogs the other day and ran into my neighbor who said her rotty was on tramadol. I didn't know they put dogs on tramadol either and I thought it was strange as well!
535089 tn?1400673519 Dogs can take Tramadol. Our older Dobe takes it occasionally for his aches and pains. If addiction is your worry, relax. Unless he has opposable thumbs, he will have a hard time getting the cap off the bottle and taking too many. And I don't think he'll be able to write illegal prescriptions or take himself to many different vets to keep his supply going! You will control how much he gets.
Avatar f tn s a drug that is commonly prescribed to old dogs and I witnessed a neighbor get hooked on his dogs medication. His dog died in excruciating pain while he was high on the dogs Tramadols. It's a horribly addictive drug and getting off of it is worse than Vicodin or Oxys. Please, leave it alone.
Avatar f tn For sure. Cats are at least 10 times smaller than a SMALL adult human female. What is given to us is too much for such a small animal. For example: The amount of Zyrtec I was told to give to Akira is only 1/4 of the adult human dosage. This is much smaller than the children's dosage, which is 1/2 of the adult human dosage. I would never ever give medications to Akira without her first seeing her doctor. I do know that no one should ever give Tylenol to their pets.
Avatar f tn Determining a dosage of tramadol for dogs is an exercise in futility. As with people, if the dog has a history of seizures it is important to let your vet know this, and they will likely tell you about alternatives. While the dosage amounts vary from dog to dog, the tramadol dosage for dogs can be put into effect by using the dog’s weight as the determinant. The usual range is .5 - 1.8mg per pound.
Avatar f tn I never like the idea of Rimadyl for dogs. Carprofen (the active ingredient in Rimadyl), even though deemed safe for dogs, still can cause too many adverse reactions and side effects for my liking. But isn't it a cryin' shame that vets have to be careful what they prescribe for pets because the owners will take it?!?! Sometimes I wonder how the human race has come as far as it has with so many idiots here to carry it on. Sorry for the rant. Some things just tick me off.
Avatar n tn Tramadol is opiate based but considered safe for dogs. My pit was on rimadyl for a year or so, then we switched to metacam which the vet said was a little stronger, then after about 2 years we added the tramadol. Just last week we upped the tramadol as dogs can develop a tolerance just like humans. I have to say, the tramadol has made a huge difference in her continued mobility.
Avatar f tn Steroids and NSAIDs should not be given together....A potential gastric bleed is the reason.....The washout phase from one medication to the other is 3 days......Of your choices, I'd definitely combine the Steroids & Tramadol for awhile and see how that goes......
Avatar f tn t give up.....There are other choices for pain control......So your Vet sent you away without anything for your dog? I believe what your Vet is saying is no anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs like Rimadyl, Metacam, Previcox, etc. because of the way they are processed & possible side effects.....However, that does NOT mean that your dog cannot have just pain medication! My choice would be "Tramadol", but I'm sure there are others....
Avatar f tn I read somewhere that blackstrap molasses works wonders for arthritis pain in dogs. I also heard of extra virgin coconut oil and apple cider vinegar. I am really tempted to mix all these and give it a try. Has anyone tried these? or are there any other natural remedies? My dog has been on metacam but it doesn't work very well, I can tell she is still in pain. My dad keeps telling us to just put her to sleep so she can rest and not be in pain anymore.
Avatar f tn She was also on Carprofen and Tramadol for arthritis and Denamarin (1 pill daily). Dr took her off Tramadol as her counts went up to alp 588 & alt 1000. She weighs 80lbs. Could I give her both the Denamarin and super milk thistle pills (maybe 1) since by weight she should be on 2 pills. Dr's don't seem to like going natural as it cuts into their profits.
787406 tn?1339203183 My aussie started hiding today, which is what my boxer did the day he died,he is in so much pain that he groans all day,I tried Tramadol last night but had no effect on the pain. Can dogs take morphine when they have kidney failure?
Avatar n tn my 103lb german sheperd/rotweiler accidentially got 200 mg of tramadol.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your response. I told mt doctor all about my use. since I had been off Tramadol for over a week she said there is no reason to start taking them again to taper off. I know that the ADs will take a while to really take effect. I am just soooo tired of being sooo tired. It is frustrating. I started taking the Tramadol because I had told my doctor I didnt want any narcotic pain relievers. I had been clean from taking methadone for 2 years at that point. Well 3 years later.....
Avatar n tn Although she has bad arthritis herself ( a Vet prescribed Tramadol for her, from reading this forum I refused it! thanks guys), she would switch back and forth aevery few minutes from bed to couch with me, as I could not get comfortable. When I was shivering and cold, I put her up against me (all 60lbs of her, and she stayed there under the blanket (which she NEVER does, as she is very independent and has a long fur coat as well. I had nobody else with me, and she was really something.
Avatar m tn He is also on Metacam for arthritis and we are going to put him on something called Tramadol I believe that is for pain. Will he also continue to be able to eat?
Avatar m tn As a traditionally trained veterinarian with several years additional training and experience in holistic natural therapies, I have found that certain natural pet vitamin supplements provide safe and effective arthritis pain relief for arthritic dogs that are also affected with thyroid and kidney issues. Various combinations of Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitan Sulfate, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and Essential Omega-3 Fatty Acids are safe and extremely effective to relieve pet arthritis pain.
Avatar n tn I don't know the life expectancy of either dog discussed in this thread, but I think any dog over 12 year old is, well old. Small dogs typically live longer than large dogs, I understand, still 15 is old. Loss of muscle control is typical of the failing of the body on older dogs, I believe. A vet may have something to help for a while, but sadly dogs don't live as long as we all wish they could.
Avatar f tn The doctor gave me Tramadol for my endometriosis pain. I have a full week of almost intolerable pain every monthl. Tramadol is one of the few drugs I can tolerate with regards to nausea (Vicodin et al seem to just make me puke immediately), and it does actually manage to relieve my pain fully or at least 80-90% (when I mix it with Aleve). The problem is this. I have to admit that I enjoy the Tramadol. It makes me feel good. Of course it does -- it makes everyone feel good.
Avatar m tn Your best bet would be to ask your Vet or a Pharmacist.
Avatar m tn I've been having back pain recently which stems from something that I have had since I was a kid, although it seems to be getting worse as I get older. What will happen is that the pain will start in my back then move down my legs. Sometimes it hurts so bad that I can hardly walk. I've been to the doctors many times, but they can never pinpoint what is causing it. Anyway, the doctor recently prescribed Tramadol for the pain.
Avatar n tn Sometimes, however, we just have to give in and use mainstream meds. Anything that is best for our dogs. Have you tried UBAvet? It has all natural ingredients and we also use fish oil with Omega 3, which the dogs love because it smells so bad. Hope Dr. Cheng has some good answers for you.
2117936 tn?1334693230 hello and welcome. did the doctor give you a taper plan? you cant stop tramadol cold turkey.it can cause seizures. some of the symptoms of withdrawal can be,anxiety, sweating insomnia, nausea, shakiness, diarrhea, brain zaps.
