Toprol xl vs atenolol

Common Questions and Answers about Toprol xl vs atenolol

Avatar n tn Hey guys - I take 12.5 mg a day of Toprol XL and it really doesn't help my PVCs all that much. It does lower my BP and heart rate, however - that is why I can't take a higher dose. I already have low BP anyway. I am wondering if Inderal might be better for me since I hear so many have had good success with it. I never tried Inderal because I heard it causes weight gain more than Toprol. No one here has had weight gain with it?
Avatar n tn After 5 years of low TSH and only occasional palpitations treated with atenolol, I have now converted over to elevated T3 and Free T4 with increasingly annoying palpitations and then a fib. I was put on Toprol XL, warfarin, and then PTU, by cardiology while waiting for my first Endocrine appointment. When I finally saw Endocrine he kept me on the PTU but increased it due to my complaint of frequent palpitations.
183202 tn?1219857259 The only reason I know I have it is due to my visit with the Dysautonomia specialist. I may switch to Inderal from Toprol XL if my symptoms ever get worse again, and the Toprol XL and Lorazepam alone isn't enough. If you could find a doctor, even a cardiologist or neurologist in your area who is knowledgeable on the field and can get you the proper testing and diagnosis to see if you have dysautonomia, that would be wonderful!!
Avatar n tn I have been getting a lot more PVC's the past couple of weeks. I switched from Toprol XL to generic Metoprolol, and I I don't know if that has had any affect. I have also had increased reflux issues during this time. I am getting more PVC's and bigeminy than normal and am noticing it most when I lean forward, especailly while eating. Does this sound like the PVC's are coming from reflux? I feel kike my heart is irritated and ready to skip at any moment.
Avatar n tn I have now been off of Toprol now for 6 weeks after taking it for 5 months. I started on Toprol XL .50mg per day. I was also taking xanax for anxiety due to an episode of SVT that sent me inot anxiety hell. After three months I got off of the xanax and went through a month of withdrawls, I was over xanax. Everyday I took the Toprol, it made me sick, flutter heartbeat, double beats, pounding heart, etc.
Avatar m tn I have taken Toprol XL 50 for several years, not to control high blood pressure or other cardiac condition, but because I have had 4 serious public speaking related crash and burn episodes (one landed me in the ER) that my cardiologist said was likely a-fib. My pharmacy switched me to the Sandoz generic in Sept 2007 and all seemed to be going well until January 2008 when I started having arrhymias, mostly at bedtime (lying flat), causing me to sleep in a chair a number of nights.
Avatar n tn PVCs since the 80's, I am 29 yr old F, have gone to ER many times for SVT/ doc put me on Toprol XL 50 mg., I started meds 1/30/04 (I waited so long because I was more afraid of the meds than condition until recently when 1) I learned SVT can lead to clotting & 2) I started suffering horrible chest pain w/them). (Noraml echo.) I've had more problems ever w/the meds, I am very sensative to meds.
Avatar f tn I understand your desire to take your heart med first thing in the morning. I took Toprol XL for two years, and this is how I did it. I took my Synthroid first thing upon waking, and sat for an hour at the computer, or went back to bed. As soon as that hour was up, I took the heart med. Then I had to sit or lay for another hour before I could take a shower without feeling like I needed supervision. It stunk, and ate up half the morning. I needed the Toprol as soon as I got out of bed.
Avatar n tn After doing EKG's, echocardiogram, blood tests, and holter monitor, they said I have Mitral valve prolapse and innapropiate sinus tachycardia because of the MVP. The cardiologist put me on Toprol xl, 50 mg (another beta blocker). First I didn't want to take it because of the bad experience with atenolol, but then tried 25 mg the first day, and felt Ok.
Avatar n tn If I hadn't been switched to verapamil, I would have insisted on Toprol XL. I don't know if atenolol is available in extended release, or if you've considered metoprolol or any of the nonselective blockers (nadolol has a >18 hour half life).
Avatar f tn I'm currently taking 20 mg of Methimazole and 75 mg of Toprol XL (just for the past week. For the 2 prior weeks, I was taking 10 mg of Methimazole and 25 mg of Toprol XL). My endocrinologist is telling me that my labs "aren't that bad", so she doesn't quite understand why I continue to have some of the symptoms that I'm experiencing (I feel quite anxious all of the time and have a hard time in certain settings (meetings, going to lunch with friends, etc.
189238 tn?1208730919 , the only thing he found was a mild aortic schlerosis, which is common in many seniors over 60. However, I was prescribed Toprol, then Toprol XL, and finally atenolol, for blood pressure regulation. My resting blood pressure was 130 over 85 before the meds. I still have the PVT and PVC, sometimes in sequence with each other and normal beats. I have experienced many different patterns and, on 2 occasions, went to the ER.
376186 tn?1219283105 I have had years of putting up w/episodes of sustained PVC's, etc and finally gave in and tried Toprol XL 25mg but did not see a big improvement, if any. After looking at an EKG when I was having these sustained PVC's a couple of wks ago, my cardio said that I needed to be on a calcium channel blocker b/c they responded to the type of PVC's that I had..I wish I had asked if there were different types of PVC's.
Avatar n tn However, if a person is experiencing 15,000 to 20,000 PVCs per day, they are at risk for developing a cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle). Toprol XL is an excellent medication for controlling PVCs. If this does not help you may consider discussing the option of an ablation with your doctor.
Avatar n tn I was free of the SVT for about 10 months while on Toprol XL 25mg. Had one recent bout of the SVT in middle of the night (was anxious that day about work and couldn't sleep) and this seems to have set off about 3 weeks worth now of many PVCs. Doc checked me out again - 24-hour holter showed 186 PVCs in 24 hours. I feel about 40 of those. Said "Everything's benign. You're totally fine." Didn't change my meds or anything. However, I'm experiencing tremendous anxiety. Questions: 1.
Avatar n tn I have read different opinion regarding Toprol Xl - does it really work on pvc? Logically it should make things worst... if it is meant to slow the heart rate down, I would think that the thumb would be more noticeable? What am I missing about this product? is 25mg per day a good starting dose? My primary care physician suggested to give it a try at 25 mg... it seems to help but now a whole lot - would 50mg do the trick?
Avatar n tn I've had the same tests as you, with the same results as you. I take 12.5 mg of Toprol XL a day, which helps. I tried to go off it, but the PVCs came back with a vengeance. I was told by my doc that I am ok, I've got NO increased risk of sudden cardiac death (but I do worry about it like you do), and that I should just ignore these stupid PVCs (yeah, right!). I have had them all my life, even when I was a little kid.
Avatar n tn I have prolapsed mitral valve syndrome, for which I see a specialist at the Prolapse Mitral Valve Center in Birmingham. He has me taking Toprol XL and Klonopin. And exercise. And avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and stimulants. This manages my symptoms fairly well. Recently I went to an internist who bills himself as a metabolic doctor. (My interest was because I have a strong family history of diabetes, and wanted coaching on avoiding it.
Avatar n tn I have a lot of tachycardia, mostly while sleeping that ranges into the 130's or 140's (yes I'm on 12.5 atenolol 2 times a day too). Why does this mostly occur at night? 2. When I have tachycardia it feels very pounding or jittery. In a structurally normal heart, does this sound benign? 3. My newest cardiologist said she has no idea what kind of tachycardia it is...
Avatar f tn He has put me on 100mg metoprolol - I'll be taking the 2nd dose (50mg) in a few minutes. He wanted me on the brand name Toprol XL, but the pharmacies are having a hard time stocking it right now so I'm on the regular (not extended release) version, taking it in the a.m. and again in the p.m.
Avatar m tn My last holter showed 186 in 24 hours (seems low when I read what others on here experience!). I feel about 20-40 of them a day. I take 25mg of Toprol XL(I have low BP, so more is out of the question), and I wonder - do any of you notice that your PVCs come on like gangbusters when your meds wear off? My Toprol is supposed to be a long-acting drug, but about 18 hours after taking it, I feel almost every single PVC - about one every 10 minutes. It's a brutal 6 hours, I'll tell ya.
Avatar n tn Hi, I am looking for some feedback on medication. I am 43 and have been on toprol xl for several years. About 3 yrs ago i started having palpatations. I went through a stress test and they were ok. I wore a monitor and that was normal. Another doctor put me on zestril to help with the palpatations. They went away and have returned. My first problem is weight gain. Has anyone had a problem with this after being put on blood pressure medicine.
Avatar n tn So my doctor has me on 50mg of Toprol XL a day. Unless I want to suffer the consequences I cannot run, go up stairs or anything of that sort. The one test we have not performed is a stress test, but my doctor refuses to do one since I am so young and during my blood work my lipids were fine. Im still so angry at what is being done about it, however I do find comfort in others who can sympathize with me.
221122 tn?1323014865 At the reception they started back up and have been going strong for the last 10 days. I began toprol xl - 25 mg. about a week ago. A couple of days in and I was starting to drag - a few more days and I was sick to my stomach all day long. The heart beats became more normal but I was either 1/2 asleep or on the verge of throwing up all day long. Not a great condition to be in when trying to run a 7 person household.
Avatar n tn The cardiologist put me on 50 mg of toprol XL daily. The cardiologist sent me for an echo and it came back normal. When I went back to the cardiologist for a followup, I asked if the toprol could be giving me a funny feeling in my chest. He suggested that maybe I was now hypersensitive and I told him I didnt think so. In fact, I asked if I really needed the medicine, since I had only one episode and it might not happen again.
