Common Questions and Answers about Toprol xl vs atenolol

toprol

Avatar n tn I have frequent PVC's (often with bigeminy) and I also have lots of reflux problems. I have been getting a lot more PVC's the past couple of weeks. I switched from Toprol XL to generic Metoprolol, and I I don't know if that has had any affect. I have also had increased reflux issues during this time. I am getting more PVC's and bigeminy than normal and am noticing it most when I lean forward, especailly while eating. Does this sound like the PVC's are coming from reflux?
Avatar f tn She had to take the brand name Tenormin and then she felt much better until her heart failure advanced. Then, she took Toprol XL which is like Tenormin, but stays at a constant level throughout the day. She felt tired and not so well when she was on the Toprol XL. She was allergic to the ace inhibitor, which would have helped her heart failure a great deal.
Avatar n tn You can get off the Toprol - its not easy - weening slow works the best your side effects are pretty normal of toprol - I took toprol xl for about 6.5 years - long term useage ! I hated it - have to say it was the worst beta blocker iv taken in my life ! and I would never take it or anything like it again ! if you get help from Doctor in weening off it , expect to be put on another drug after your off the toprol - for h.b.p. ccb or ?
280234 tn?1532986249 I was later switched to Toprol XL 25 mg to control the tachycardia better. I was on that several years. I then found out I was pregnant with my second child, and switched to Labetalol. After having the 2nd baby (which was a normal delivery) I was put on Toprol XL again by my PCP. I was eventually referred to a cardiologist by my PCP to evaluate the high BP & tachycardia as a precaution. I now have a cardiologist.
Avatar m tn Oilurt, do you have a pacemaker with defibrillator, or just the defibrillator? The reason I'm curious is that people that have demand pacemakers will have their heart rate maintained at a certain point if their heart rate drops too low. Taking too much of a Beta Blocker can drop your heart rate, with a demand pacemaker, it would be assured to be maintained at a certain rate.
Avatar m tn I have taken 50 mgs of toprol XL for 12-13 years. It is a very safe and a good medication in my opinion. The XL means that it has an Extended Life .. in other words one pill is supposed work for at least 24 hours i think... but anyway... I dont know why the doc would say just use it when your rate is fast.. if you took one a day ....your heart rate should stay pretty regular Id think.. but Im not a doctor... I dont really know about taking it occassionally... doesnt make alot of sense to me..
Avatar f tn MY DOCTOR ABRUPTLY TOOK ME OFF OF TOPROL XL 25 MG AND SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN HAVING HORRIBLE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING SEVERE ANXIETY AND JITTERS...FEEL LIKE I WANT JUMP OUT OF MY SKIN. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 4 WEEKS. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW LONG THIS LASTS? DOES ANYONE KNOW IF GABA HELPS? PLEASE HELP....I AM SOOO DESPERATE FOR HELP AND MY DOCTOR IS OF NO HELP OTHER THEN TO GIVE ME XANAX.
Avatar n tn I take Toprol XL 50 mg. and palpitations began again after they were gone for a month. Cardiologist said he could put me in the hospital and monitor me on the drug sotalol to try to get them to stop. Does anyone know about this medication and if so does it work and what are the side affects?
Avatar f tn I take 200 mg of toprol xl (metoprolo er), 100 morning, 100 night. My tables can be broken in half to make a 50 mg dose, which I have also used. I'd guess your 50 mg toprol xl can be split in half to give you a 25 mg tablet. I'm not suggesting what dose you should use, just saying I think you have a way to take 25 mg accurately if that's what is needed. I take the med to slow down my HR, driven by AFig. When in sinus I was taking 100 mg and had a rest HR of about 60.
280234 tn?1532986249 I am a 28 year old female, and mother of 2 young kids. After the labor & delivery of my first child 6 years ago, I developed high BP and what seemed to be a faster heartbeat. I am kind of an anxious person, so I attributed the heartbeat to that. I went to my PCP over the BP and he diagnosed anxiety related hypertension, and didn't think I needed to see a cardiologist. So I took Atenolol, and was then switched to Toprol XL to control the BP & heart rate, which it seemed to do.
1090352 tn?1257448016 I have been having PVC's since July. I am currently on Toprol XL, 25mg in the morning and 50mg in the evening and they haven't stopped only softened in their effect ( I still feel them just not as hard a pounding sensation). I found out from extensive testing that I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis which has formed nodules on the left side of my thyroid gland. My question...
Avatar f tn I found that 75mg of Toprol-XL 2x/day works better than 100/am and 50pm or 150mg am. Go figure.
Avatar n tn I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.
Avatar f tn Yes you can find online a few web sites , that will tell you this ! look under side effects of toprol xl - you can find it by reading (problems with toprol xl) it should come up ! a long while ago (years) bbc news reported the u.k medical asso , had found beta blockers caused cholesterol to build up in most people who took it. so they limited the use of beta blockers - they also reported that due to adverse side effects , beta blockers would be in limited useage in the u.k.
Avatar f tn I tried lots of meds before- verapamil, cardizem, flecainide, Toprol XL ( hated it- had headaches, bad nausea). So far the atenolol has worked the best with the least side effects for me. The bad effects I feel are fatigue, and a heaviness in my chest laying down or with exercise. But prior to taking my resting heart rate is 110- 120... and then the SVT attack it would go up to 150 - 175 for an hour or two. I am sure you are "worn out" with it at 155. I too am only a low dose.
Avatar m tn If it gets too low, I delay the dose. I used to take Toprol XL and I broke that in half on the advice of a nurse, even tho it was extended release. That was better. If I took a whole tablet, my bp would drop like a stone. I worked this out with my primary care doctor and my cardiologist was fine with it.
1569985 tn?1328247482 After lung surgery, being in afib for 5 weeks and barely keeping my heart rate manageable, being finally converted twice in one week, I am on amiodarone 200 mg. once a day and Toprol XL 25 mg. once a day, both taken in the morning. My heart rate after about 3 weeks started dropping into the 40's. I finally saw the new ep who said I had "complicated afib" and recommended ablation -- I am waiting to hear from the scheduler, but it looks like after the first of the year.

343006 tn?1314446471 I then e mailed the makers of toprol xl - and they confirmed toprol xl can cause ringing of the ears as a known side effect. I also checked DIovan and its listed as well - Due to this , I guess the next best thing to do is see my Doctor and complain to get off the medications or switch them. thanks too for info on h.b.p and how it can cause ringing in the ears, when its too high .. I recheck and check my b.p everyday 3 to 4 times daily- when medicatated its down to normal levels.
Avatar n tn My cardiologist has never suggested an alternative to Metoprolol (generic Toprol) to Atenolol when I had low BB problems, when I was at the 200 mg level. His solution was to lower the BB dose and add CCB. As both lower BP it would seem a catch22, but no so as my BP is mostly normal. I still have some dizziness when I first stand from a long period of sitting/resting. That is part of why I am now undergoing some further tests... including a 30 day monitor, which has not yet arrived.
212161 tn?1599427282 Ok this is interesting. I sometimes use toprol xl to control tachycardia, but since I exercise, I find that my heart rate in the morning can be a little low. Maybe a bb like this is a good alternative for someone like me. I don't know about the side effects t you are experiencing. Maybe ask your doc. ..
Avatar f tn Hi, Everyone. My EP switched me from Sotalol (160 mg daily) to Toprol XL (25 mg daily). His instructions were to stop taking Sotalol (no weaning) and start taking Toprol. It was a HUGE leap of faith for me as I have tried to not obsess about this. Today was my first day. I'm doing fine, but want to know if anyone else has made the same switch and faired well. Thanks!
492869 tn?1285018933 Atenolol/Tenormin, Metoprolol/Toprol XL, Acebutolol/Sectral, etc.
Avatar n tn I have taken Toprol xl 25 mg for about 5 years. My doctor switched me to metoprolol several months ago. When I filled my prescription this time, it was from a different mfg and I think I may be having problems with it as I just don't feel right. Could changing the mfg make a difference? ALSO, my doctor prescribed 50 mg to be cut in half for my prescribed 25 mg dose. Does cutting this tablet in half compromise the time release?
Avatar f tn My pharmacacy switched my "Toprol XL 50 mg" to a Generic one called "Metoprolol Succinate ER 50 mg" (manufactured by Sandoz) in December 2007. I have been on some form of Beta Blockers for years and I thought nothing of it. Within a week I was at my eye doctor because my left eye went from 20/20 to 20/60 and was so blurry that I felt like I had suntan lotion or something in it. Since then I have been to so many doctors because things just kept getting worse.
Avatar n tn I am now on toprol XL 50mg once a day. My blood pressure is running 120/71 now. when the PVC are happening I am dizzy and cannot think straight. I dont know how I can just live with this when I feel so flush and cannot function. Seems like 1/3 less pulses means 30 % less oxygen carrying RBC are circulating. It seems debilitating to me. Can the toprol XL dose be increased without running my blood pressure down too low. How high can it be raised safely.
Avatar m tn m @210 (still overweight) and on low dosages of Lisinopril (10mg), Toprol XL (25mg), and a diuretic (37.5). Over the past 4 weeks, I've experienced some morning sluggishness and ED. It's not a sudden onset; I've been very cold some nights at bedtime, had sporatic ED... and I walk 5 miles a day four or more times a week... so up to now, no one has been surprised about a pulse of 60. Only now my pulse is often @ 50 and occasionally in the mid to upper 40's.
Avatar n tn Been on toprol xl for a long tine and have been experiencing anxiety and depression! Can this med cause this after many year So?
Avatar n tn I am wondering if you are uneasy about taking digoxin. If so, I would ask you cardio if you can get by with just the TOPROL XL. Digoxin, xanax, toprol xl, and lisinoprol seems like a lot of stuff to be taking. I am a runner and only take TOPROL XL 12.5mg. This knocks out my extra beats and really slows my heart down. A little seems to go a long way for me.
