Common Questions and Answers about Toprol xl norvasc

Avatar n tn After taking Toprol XL 50 for ten months, my doctor has said that I can wean myself off it gradually over a few weeks. He's suggested breaking the pills in half, taking only a half each day instead of a whole one. I know that these pills are time released and I am wondering if breaking them in half defeats the time release action and if this is an appropriate way of getting half dosage. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Avatar n tn 5 mg per day) for the past 18 months and have been advised to stop. I also currently am taking Toprol XL (50 mg per day). Both were prescribed following angioplasty for RCA blockage. Is it necessary to gradually reduce the dose or frequency of a calcium channel blocker, or is it safe to simply stop taking it. What are the possible complications?
Avatar n tn Dave, I have experience with Toprol XL 50mg. My cardiologist diagnosed me with having PVC's(this is a fairly common problem with the heart and is usually harmless). PVC's are pre-ventricular contractions. Most people that have them never even notice them. But, of course, I was one of those few people that felt every damn one of them. It felt like my heart was skipping beats and it scared the hell out of me. My internist kept telling me that I was having panic attacks and prescribed xanax.
Avatar n tn My doctor (Family Practice) is having me cut back to 100 mg of the Toprol and add 5 mg of Norvasc (a calcium channel blocker)for 7 days, then quit the Toprol and go to 10 mg of the Norvasc. My question is whether this is enough "weening" off the Toprol to avoid problems with withdrawl that sometimes occur with beta blockers?
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with HBP 3 years ago and on heavy meds (Toprol XL, Diovan and Norvasc 2X a day). Recently I have experienced extreme tiredness and lowering of my BP to 100 or below on my systolic reading and around 68-72non diastolic. I am to the point where it is hard to stay awake during the day at work and just not feeling up to par. In addition to my tiredness I am extremely weepy. What is wrong with me?
Avatar n tn My doctor (Family Practice) had put me on a beta blocker (Toprol XL) for primary hypertension, but the blood pressure didn't come down enough and resting heartrate went to 45-55. So, he recently (less than 2 weeks ago) changed it to a calcium channel blocker (Norvasc 10 mg/day). The blood pressure is responding well, but after a week my ankles started swelling every day (no other side effects). It isn't a large amount of swelling but enough to be noticed if you look right at them.
Avatar n tn In August, I was diagnosed as hypertensive (BP in the range of 160/110) and put on a beta blocker (Toprol XL). It lowered my pulse into the 40's and had minimal effect on my BP, so my doctor tried a calcium channel blocker (Norvasc). It controlled my BP very well, but caused major swelling of my feet and ankles. Now, he's tried me on an ACE inhibitor (Accupril) at 20, then 40, then 60 mg. with little effect (BP stays around 150/105).
Avatar n tn Are those of you with fatigue talking about Toprol or Toprol XL? Toprol is the same as lopressor and metoprolol. The XL type is a long-release version.

She now takes Toprol XL 25mg, HCT 25 mg, and 0.5 tab Lanoxin 0.125mg after brk, Norvasc 2.5mg after lunch, 0.5 tab Toprol 2 to 3 pm, and Lanoxin 1 tab about 7 pm. 1. Avatar n tn I also take BP med Toprol XL but only .25 mg. per day, most of the time half the tablet so only .12.5 mg. I have felt pressure or squeezing in my neck and wonder if their may be blockage in the arteries. I have had EKG's, Echo, and also cat scan to determine seizure or something else which was negative. I do not exercise regularly, history of eating fast foods often, need to lose about 70-80 lbs. My triglycerides are also twice what they should be but good and bad cholesterol are fine.
Avatar n tn I've been taking Norvasc 5mg and Toprol XL 50 mg for about 7 years now to control BP. I have never had any side effects until about two to weeks ago. I started getting palpitations once or twice a day and a slight dizziness or disconnected feeling. I have also been getting stomach cramps and my left bicep has been doing the nerve flutter once in a while.

Avatar n tn Hyzarr 100-25 one/day; Toprol XL 200mg one/day; Metformin 1000mg one/day; Norvasc 5mg one/day. doc has added Avandia, and reduced Glyburide to 2/day. Avatar f tn I have recently gone off Toprol XL after ~ 1 year of tx due to it making me feel sluggish and making exercise difficult. This has been 2 weeks. Last week, my doctor also switched my verapamil ER (300mg) to Norvasc (10 mg). For the last several days my heart has felt it is racing. Because my BP meds were switched up, I have been monitoring my BP which in turn has a HR output. My resting HR is now anywhere from 90 - 109 BPM.
876405 tn?1243511886 I'm taking Beta Blockers too, Toprol XL 50mg. I'm 30 years old, am I supposed to take these forever?? I've read that you should not stop taking Beta Blockers suddenly, b/c it could increase risk of complications. I guess your suppossed to slowly decrease dosages until you stop. Is that correct? Does anyone know about long term side effects of Beta Blockers? Good luck on your echo.

Avatar n tn How do I know or how will I feel to know if they are worse. I already fatigued very easy and am on nitro patches for chronic angina. I take Toprol XL 50mg twice a day along with 5mg Norvasc and 2 1/2 mg Altace, and two 81mg aspirin. If more then one valve goes or gets bad at once can they replace two or three at one time. I guess I need to mention I have had bad plueral effusions after bypass surgery and in 2004 I had a stroke due to a blood clot. I also do take 80mg Torsimide to remove fluid.

I am always in pain and all I want to do is cry.My walking is very poor as I can't stand for long because of the pain and tingling. My Neurologist is not going out of his way to explain things.Infact, when I call him he hardly ever calls back. I have heard this from alot of his other patients.

Avatar m tn My cardiologist weaned my off the Toprol XL over a two week period and put me on Norvasc (a Calcium channel blocker). I could only take it for about three weeks before swelling of the ankles made it (in my opinion, I didn't tell him about it) impossible to continue. Now, I just do the Dyazide and check my blood pressure. Don't know about Carvedilol.
