told me that he would be doing periodic blood work to make sure that the Topamax was not effecting/damaging my liver. On my last test is when Hep C was diagnoised, my blood work showed elevated liver enzymes, the rest is history. I start my first treatment tomorrow, Sat., and I am scheduled to take them for 11 months. Topamax helped me to be diagnoised earlier.

The Depakote would be the first drug of choice BUT now would it be tegretol or Topamax as we have restarted topamax..... and this Left temporal Frontal Lobe is where and partial is the type.... Staring and possible emotional outbursts... tears, Laughter, anger...

I have found that with myself, Topamax works well with controlling the seizures, and has much less effect on liver functions, making it a much safer drug for me. I would be intersted to know what 3 meds he is on for seizures, any severity of liver damage so far by hep c, and how old he is. As always, consulting with his neurologist and his GI in conjunction is the safest bet. As far as websites for the two, I have not found any.

Topamax is for migraines

Now many people live with Cirrhosis for years, however the topamax is the main issue. It is hard on the Liver but I chose to take every other day. I take Liv 52, MSM, Vitamin Supplements, whole wheat only, no liquor, exercise, and that is all I can do. I also take Omega 3's which I hear are good for you. However, I do trust this Doctor, but God is the main one that make the decisions. My thryroid was good as well as lab! So that is is great for now! Thanks for the help!

Don't know anything about Topamax -- it's approved use is for seizures and preventing migraines, not treating them, which suggests it's not for pain control, but docs use many things off-label. Have you tried neurontin (gapapentin), the earlier drug from Lyrica? Many tolerate it better, some less. It can also cause weight gain, as will any drug that slows you down -- these drugs are basically GABA, which is the body's relaxant, so when you target that you can gain weight.

I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.

I still have trouble with fatigue, maybe a side effect of the Topamax, but doc is checking my thyroid and liver enzymes just to make sure everything checks out. Right now, I'm not on Wellbutrin. My doc and I think I have Seasonal Affective Disorder. We are looking into starting Wellbutrin in October if I need to and continuing through March. I just hated the numbness of the Zoloft. If I don't need Wellbutrin in the fall, I'll stay off of it.

I was told by my neuro doc that there needs to be a liver check frequently when on Topamax due to a toxic buildup.

Now without CT results the doctor is suggesting a biopsy. I believe this is due to negative hepatitis tests and recently switching to Topamax from Depakote after 18 years. Is a biopsy really necessary? I think maybe they are worried that there is some damage from the Depakote?

I have suffered from migraines since my late 20's. I am now 49. I have tried any and every migrained med, some work, some don't. My doctor has just suggested topamax. Has anyone taken this? Does it work? I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches.

I was on 50 mg topamax at bedtime and have recently decided to stop (per dr.)I was only on it for 10 days, but had terrible side effects. Since stopping the MEDs. the side effects are crazy! I feel all of this anxiety and I cannot sleep, I have bizarre thoughts and zero appetite. This has been going on since I stopped 2 days ago. Anyone else experience this and more importantly how many days til I feel better???

I have recently been diagnosed with basilar migraine and told to try Topamax, which I have to take over a period of months. We were hoping to have children soon, and were told I couldnt get pregnant while on this drug. What happens if we want to start trying for a baby, do I come off Topamax, and the symptoms come back? Or do I stay on it and not try for a baby for a long time???

About 1.5 yrs now I have been on Topamax. Also around that time, my thyroid started acting up. I started losing my hair, cold hands and feet, feeling very tired, bad memory etc.. I was building the topamax up and lowering the lamictal down. Now I am just on the topamax. The side affects seem quite scary to me, severe dizziness and very off balance, I am always tired and have tingling in the hands and feet. I seem loss for words and confused.
