Topamax and tension headaches

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and tension headaches

topamax

Avatar f tn i have migraines and take topamax....it does relieve the headaches as a daily medication, just as long as they get the dosing correct. (and make sure you take it at the same time every day) i have noticed if i take it late then i tend to have the headaches the next day. you might see if they can put you on a medication in case you have a headache while on the topamax.
Avatar f tn Another entity is tension headaches, which differ from migraine in not being localized and not associated with neurological symptoms. This can be treated with over the counter analgesics, stress management and relaxation techniques. You must go for a review with your neurologist for getting some respite from your symptoms like addition of triptans when you have an attack. Take care.
Avatar f tn Thanks again Sara12345. I will definitely keep them up to date with the signs and symptoms. But I finally gave in and went to the doctor's office the next day. I was prescrided Topamax, it seems to be helping alittle bit, my headaches aren't as bad as before.
Avatar f tn I was going through, oh I dunno, 6 excedrin migraine pills a day, I was immune to Tylenol because I had taken so much of it as a kid, and nothing else worked. Sooo, finally my neurologist had me try Topamax and it worked out rather lovey. I've been on it for about 3-4 months now and I think I've had maybe 3 headaches since then. The first day I didn't have one I thought something was wrong with me:p Getting through all of the side effects was a bit weird, but worth it for me.
1512520 tn?1290258130 My neuro wants to put me on it for recurring tension headaches and I could certainly use the weight loss side effect lol.
Avatar f tn My neurologist diagnosed it as chronic tension headaches and were prescribe Topamax that I stopped taking about a year ago. I am very scared something is wrong because I am having nagging headaches starting at the back and working its way behind my eyes. I don't know if its anxiety/stress or if its really something wrong. Should I go get another Ct Scan or MRI? My doctor tells me Im ok its from anxiety and sleep apnea.
Avatar n tn Wow, I finally found someone who has headaches on top of the head daily like me. It's so painful and mine hardly ever go away. They are not always as severe as they are at times when I go to the hospital but it is always there. I went to the neurologist am awaiting approval from my insurance for an MRI. I'm so scared. Hoping it's nothing serious. God Bless.
Avatar f tn You need to be revaluated not for the cyst but if the cyst has undergone any change / increase in the size or hemorrhage in the recent past to cause these continuous headaches, any tumors stretching the pain sensitive dura, impending rupture or ruptured aneurysm, change of medicines for migraine, trial of otherpreventive medicines lie topamax, other drugs used to abort a migraine attack in triptans and ergots group. Rule out tension headaches by stress relieving measures and behavioral therapy.
Avatar f tn I have been treated for tension headaches and migraines since 2009. I was diagnosed with JME when I was 13. I'm currently on 150 topamax and 500 lamictal for seizures. I have tried antimigraines, analgesics, muscle relaxants, nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory and steroids, ssnri antidepressants and obviously acetaminophen and aspirin for headaches . I have one every single day but the severity of it varies. Within the past few days I have noticed slight shaking and weakness in my hands.
Avatar f tn Hi Headaches at the back of the head may have occipital neuralgia, cervicogenic headaches, tension type headaches and migraine headaches as differentials. A scan of the cervical spine will be able to assess if an underlying disorder of the cervical spine may be contributing to the pain. Cervicogenic headaches may also refer pain to the face. Arthritic or musculoskeletal causes have to be ruled out. Occipital neuralgia usually occurs after a mechanical injury to the head or neck.
Avatar f tn I have tooken migraines preventives with no luck in getting lowering the amount of headaches I get. I do take regular meds like tylenol, advile and motrin. I can not link my headaches to any thing.
Avatar f tn I haven't been able to identify any triggers besides stress. We took out all of the dietary possibilities and I have noted no changes. I think my major issue is chronic dehydration and poor stress management skills. I tend to internalize! THe 50 mg with Amitriptilne has been a huge help. I was getting migraines 2-3 times a month with tension and stress headaches in between. I'm hopin the pins and needles reduces or goes away as I like this combo so far. Thanks for the help!
Avatar f tn I got Facet shots, which made the neck pain go away but nothing will help the headaches. The headaches start as tension at the base of skull and work up to top of head and they feel deep. Most times it is so deep it feels like a worm tying to dig out of my head. Light nor sounds bother me when I do have the headaches sneezing, bending over, laughing, and coughing make it worse. I have been keeping a journal and the PM and GP doctors cant pinpoint anything.
618913 tn?1234747600 Hi, I don't know if anyone has any advice. I have had a headaches since last Friday (off and on) They got worse on Wednesday with really bad nausea and I had to go into my neurologist and he gave me an IV treatment. They gave me extra pain meds and nausea meds and said I'd feel like I was punched in the head the next day but that the IV treatment was successful. I felt that way the next day but I still have remnant headaches. Today I'm even sound sensitive.
Avatar f tn Different preventive medication for migraines may not be effective on tension headaches. I have tried propanolol, which did nothing for me. Ditto for topamax--just made me dizzy, couldn't tolerate it for more than 1 day. Haven't tried antidepressants yet because Elavil, which the doctor recommended, can cause heart rhythm problems if you get premature ventricular contractions (skipped heartbeats). I have fioricet for pain relief, but it barely works.
1983417 tn?1326416870 I've suffered from daily horrible intense chronic tension headaches the past 5 months which I believe where due to stress which caused a "flare up" in my tmj so I saw a nuerologist who diagnosed me with chronic tension headaches. The past week I've been taking topamax and an anti-inflamatory which has significantly reduced my pain. However, my head feels sooo weak and weird! I was wondering if this was a normal healing process since I was in pain for so long?
Avatar f tn Well im 18 years old and been having these really bad headaches since i was about 12. Doctors can't figure out what's wrong.I had a mri of the brain, mra of the neck and they all came out clear. I'm taking 2 butal apap 325 caff tab, 1 and a half topamax, 1 and a half trileptal, and one baclofen. My doctor also gave me a soft neck brace to wear while in on the computer and watching tv, but it seems like the brace is making this worse.
536122 tn?1213486475 tension-type headache and cluster headache.. The attacks of pain can be caused by triggering factors such as stress, hormonal changes, and diet. Tension-type headache is the most common and affects up to 75% of headache sufferers. Although it is more common in women, tension-type headache can affect anyone who sustains the same body position for lengthy periods, or individuals prone to anxiety or stress. It is caused by contractions of the neck and shoulders.
Avatar m tn To be safe i go for monthly check ups to see for side effects and if anything is wrong. I get tension headaches from another disorder and topamax has reduced them greatly. Keep it at a low dose to start if you choose topamax but don't go in with a specific medication in mind ask and do research for migraine medicines.
Avatar f tn hey, i'm with ya on the daily chronic tension headaches! you sound like me. i, too, suffer from migraines (but not nearly as much as i did just a year or few before)....but the biggest trouble i have is with the daily tension headaches. there's a TON of true "migraine" medication out there (i'm currently taking Relpax, works great, doesn't make me nauseous like the imitrex sometimes did).....but not much in the way of meds for true tension headaches.....
Avatar f tn After two months of various symptoms that started with a traumatic event with my PREVIOUS doctor I was diagnosed by a Army neurologist with Fibro. and will have a appt. with a Rhumtd. doctor hopefully in a week for confirmation. Before I got in I just started Topamax for pain I've been having primarily face pain, headaches, aching in upper jaw ( maxillary) but, this was given to me by a PA on a low dose, the neuro. is starting me on nortryptilyn.
Avatar f tn these could be one of the chronic severe headaches like migraine, cluster or tension headaches. Observe if you have any associated aura of symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, photophobia etc. postural record of blood pressure to rule out any autonomic instability needs to be kept. trial of medications for preventing migraines like topamax and to treat them like triptans needs to be allowed. MRI brain is required to rule out tumors or aneurysm.
Avatar f tn My current md said there is interaction between amitriptylline and topamax and also compazine which i take as needed. I do lortab for the pain, but i am afraid to take the topamax rx'd for "migraines" i don't think they are migraines. I was thinking i should call tci tomorrow and see if i could run this all by dr shelat or dr insigna.
Avatar n tn Barring that, my personal belief is that namenda and topamax are the best thing going for both migraines and tension headaches as prophylaxis. I took them both together and they helped some. I also usually added in an antidepressant known to suppress headaches (of which there are a few). And I did also take the magnesium supplements with it as has been suggested - still do in fact, along with some other vitamins.
Avatar n tn I have had periods of migraine headaches followed by black outs, memory loss, and was hospitalized for seizures. I was placed on a seizure med which I had a terrible reaction to. My driver license has been revoked due to an accident - I drove off a bridge. My headaches have become unbearable and I am having problems finding information that links the TGA, seizures, and migraines.
Avatar n tn I had my surgery dec 2008 and was without headaches for two months after surgery. I discontinued pain meds after two weeks after surgery. Headaches returned in Feb 09 from pressure from bending over as before surgery. I may have pushed myself too hard as my father had broken his hip and needed constant lifting. Now it's almost a year later and headaches are continuing usually later in the afternoon early evening. If I lay down flat the HD usually will go away after a few minutes.
Avatar f tn Headaches can be caused by a variety of reasons often categorized into primary headaches, secondary headaches, and cranial neuralgias. The primary headaches include tension headache, migraine cluster headaches and similar pathologies. Secondary causes can be due to sinusitis eye problems, etc and the cranial neuralgias that include the trigeminal neuralgias.
