911669 tn?1294099188 Good morning everyone, I just went and saw a speech pathologist yesterday for my swallowing issues. It was very informative for me. She gave me a number of tongue and swallowing exercises to increase strength at the base of my tongue. She also is suggesting to my neuro a modified barium swallow to see where things stand. I go back to my neuro next month for followup.
Avatar n tn The therapist said that he had a problem using his tongue to form words so they would do exercises to move his tongue such as drinking from a straw and blowing bubbles. He is no longer seeing the therapist, I guess they felt he had improved and didnt need to see him anymore. His is still alittle hard to understand but I can tell that he is improving. He also stopped biting and fighting at daycare.
Avatar m tn Yes, some kids do have a delay in speaking and it is meaningless. They begin talking in full sentences. I think that I'd talk to your pediatrician about it, however. I always think checking in with an expert is helpful. Perhaps they will have some suggestions for you on how to bring about speech. Or if there is a bigger issue, they can begin to address it as early intervention can do wonders.
Avatar f tn The other reason why it is important to address speech early on is because having issues with speech can hinder social growth. It is hard to play with friends if you can't communicate with them. At almost 3, she'll be coming out of parrellel play soon and moving onto play with peers. So, I'd take her to a speech specialist and have her assessed. You can also do some mouth exercises--------- turn on music and you two make funny faces and then freeze when you stop the music.
667445 tn?1230750538 A child between the ages of 18 months and 3 years will generally mispronounce many words. There are many speech therapy exercises or activities kids which help to improve their communication such as Flashcards, Mirror Exercises, Frog Hop, Guess Who? And many more. If the problem is not pronunciation but rather that your child isn’t talking or is talking very little, you should act a little more quickly.
Avatar f tn Keep doing it in game fashion. Do tongue exercises----------- stick tongue out and pull it in really fast, move tongue side to side, move tongue up to roof of mouth (may be hard for him), trace lips with tongue. Suck a lollypop. Blow bubbles. Take a straw cut in half and blow a cotton ball across a table ----------- do it with him and have a race. Drink thick liquids through a straw such as smoothie, milkshake or applesauce. When he says something wrong, try not to always correct him.
Avatar m tn I think the surgery released me from upper body tension but I still have speech problems and the tongue is quite short. My doctor says that when it will completely heal in 1-2 months she will check it again and maybe I will have one more surgery. I wrote a lot about tongue-tie on the internet but there was not anything about that sometimes you need to have more than one surgery to completly release the tongue. So are there any situations when one surgery is not enough?
Avatar f tn I also have the slurred speech, but like thieb9 I have excessive saliva. it tends to happen in the evenings for me. Its an almost daily occurrence. I try not to talk when I feel that way. I also experience cognitive issues when this happens too. I don't realize it at the time, but if I answer an email then reread it the following morning it will be jumbled up like a child typed it..... I try and do all my buisness early in the day before my brain turns to mush and the symptoms flare.
Avatar f tn ve had some botillium injections into the Chrico muscle and I consulted a Speech Pathologist that gave me exercises to do. That made a significant difference in the quality of my voice and I do Sing Australia now :) I would recommend that you see a Speech Pathologist, but you need to get your GERD under control or even the exercises will not help longterm. The type of exercises that I do: yawns with a lot of technical direction and stretches of the tongue against my front teeth.
Avatar m tn What you have is probably dysarthria or distorted speech due to inability to coordinate the muscles of speech. Local causes like fixed tongue, thick tongue, and cracked tongue should be looked into. Transient ischemic attack, Wilson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, myasthenia gravis etc are some of the causes of dysarthria.
Avatar f tn My oldest son (now 8) is tongue tied. We found out at his 18 month appointment and realized that was why he could never latch on for breastfeeding. However, the Dr said at that point they recommend waiting to see of it affected him before having his frenulum cut. He's in 2nd grade this year and has never had any speech problems due to the short tongue. IMO, if your baby isn't having problems eating, just leave it be. If as he gets older he starts having issues, you could look into it.
2098262 tn?1333322736 He also used to stick out his tongue and that stopped. He has been under the care of a doctor and a speech therapist and they never noticed any abnormalities with his mouth. This morning, he had his mouth open and I noticed (NEVER saw it before today) a webbing that went from the tip of his tongue to the floor of his mouth. Is it possible to develop a tongue tie later in childhood or was it always there and has just gotten worse? Thanks!
3053649 tn?1356365017 That little piece of flesh under the tongue is very close or at the tip of the babies tongue which can cause speech problems and trouble with breast feeding. So what happens is the doc will recommend it to be clipped to free the movement of the tongue. It literally takes 2 seconds and barely bleeds. My son just had it done. He's adjusting to the freedom of moving his tongue around.
Avatar m tn I noticed that when I move my tongue around like that or do a little random movement with my tongue it feels a lot more flexible. Words are a lot less harder to pronounce especially.
Avatar m tn s thyroiditis have tongue issues that has/had an impact on your speech? I have the scalloped appearance to my tongue, a swollen feeling near the back and underneath the tongue which affects my speech. Did the thyroid meds fix the problem and if so, how long did it take?
11218124 tn?1416289399 t think that you should worry about this, but as you are concerned, get him assessed. Some children have tongue tie and may find it difficult to make the word sounds. Keep talking to him and point at objects and colours and tell him what they are. Children also like to have a book read to them, so you can do that and point to the pictures and tell him what they are. With repetition, he will slowly learn and will start to experiment with his words. They also like to draw and scribble.
Avatar n tn what might be the cause of waking up suddenly from sleep during night because of a choking sensation due to severe swelling of tongue (so much swelling that I was unable to fit in my dentures) .This was associated with extremely garbled speech. I didn't call 911 because i couldn't speak. I checked in mirror and my smile was not distorted. I am a 63 yr. old female who is on medication for hypertension and have a strong family history for stroke and heart disease.
Avatar n tn She recently got into a major altercation with some family folks and because of the mental and emotional distress she has lost her speech ability. She can speak but with a heavy tongue and she says that she cannot feel her tongue. Can anyone tell me if this phenomenon is temporary or permanent. Also what can I do to reverse this condition?
Avatar f tn So my first baby had a tongue tie and I was unsuccessful at breastfeeding I had to pump the entire time. I did get it snipped but he was to use to bottles I just couldn't stand the pain, the doctor who snipped it though told me it was genetic so I'm just wondering has anyone had a baby with tongue tie and their next babies were also??
4619045 tn?1361132610 I do exercises and swallow by turning head to the right and chin tuck food doesnt get stuck when I remember to do it. My speech therapist didnt know what to do bout the forgetting how to swallow part but I just deal with it when it happens talk myself thru the process in my head seems to work for me. I would mention it to your neuro and see what they recommend.
Avatar n tn The man said so I saw you as I walked by, he asked if I had a computer? On a tongue depressor he wrote (spasmodic torticollis). For two days the tightness and not being able to take a deep breath persisted. On the third day my left arm became week. Now I got scared went to hospital while in waiting room my hand extended itself and it got tingly and very painful. I began to hyperventilate. They did catscan, ekg everything came back fine. Avatar f tn Hi my sister-n-law had triplets and then another set of twins. All premie's and all with delayed speech. By age 2 they all had a speech therapist work with them because of weak mouth/tongue. Within a short period of time they all had advanced in their language skills. The therapist said with some mouth exercises they have really caught up. They are now 6 and 3 yrs old.
Avatar f tn I was born tongue tied (never know it was called that) lol I was fine, no speech problems at all. I didn't get it cut until I was 11. Everything has been normal ever since, my tongue is just a little short.
Avatar n tn Prior to the surgery my tongue used to drift into the gap on the right handside where the cant occured and therefore my tongue is no longer asymetrical. It is causing me lot of problems in speech as now the gap is no longer their, the tongue has re-formed leaving it feeling like their is a large mass of tongue on one side of my mouth (the right side) and is not shaped at the side (like the left side) as it should be, thus catches between my upper and lower teeth when trying to speak.
Avatar f tn Tongue or teeth sucking has become a problem to me for the past ten years. I have the feeling it is changing the shape of my face. What can I do?
