Had papillary thyroid cancer 26 yrs. ago. Did not have RAI nor can i remember the last time a thyroglobulin test was done. I do not have records of the surgery. I was under the impression all these years that the whole thyroid was removed. Only to find out this year I still have a right side. Having symptoms of thyroid disease. There is a 4mm lump on the right thyroid. My problem is I can't seem to get anyone to listen and run tests. I keep getting mixed answers.
In patients with HER-2 positive tumors, chemotherapy has been shown to reduce the rate of recurrence in patients with tumors of size more than 0.5 cm. There is no proven value of chemotherapy in patients with HER-2 negative tumors less than 1 cm in size and HER-2 positive tumors less than 0.5 cm in size.
I under went double mast on Jan 09 - diagnosed with Triple Negative Grade 3, stage 3, 31 out 31 + with extensive LVI with broadly positive margins as well as intralymphatic tumor. Multifocal extracapsular extension. Can't seem to get a real survival or recurrence rate, only telling me it is not good. Under went chemo and rads just finished Sept 09. Not scheduled for scans yet. What do you think?
First time using this, am not sure I am in the right place but, I will ask any way. 45 white female with Triple negative IDC stage 3 grade 3, 31 + nodes LVI marked extensive, broadly + margins, intralymphatic tumor .1cm from margins. multifocal extracapsular extension. Just finished chemo and rads...waiting for scheduled scans. Can't seem to get a straight survival or recurrence rate from docs, just said I got it bad and will try to kill it...
Women have a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence if they take tamoxifen along with paroxetine, fluoxetine, or sertraline... but NOT citalopram, escitalopram, or fluvoxamine. .....About 30% of women on tamoxifen also take an SSRI for depression or hot flashes. FDA will add new warnings..and Medco is alerting physicians if a woman on tamoxifen gets paroxetine, fluoxetine, or sertraline. Suggest using one of the other SSRIs or venlafaxine if needed for depression or hot flashes.
For Stage 1A, overall recurrence rate was 9% (6/67). The overall recurrence rates for Stage 1A, grade1 tumors was 6% and among grade 2 tumors 12% (p=0.40). Among Stage 1A patients not treated with chemotherapy, there was a 7% (2/29) and 9.5% (2/21) recurrence rate for grade 1 and grade 2 tumors, respectively. For the grade 1 tumors, both patients are alive with disease at 3 and 5 yrs.
From the San Antonio Breast Conference in December, new data shows a higher than predicted rate of breast cancer recurrence even with very small breast cancers that are HER2 positive. The data is from the first large study to analyze early-stage breast cancer patients with HER2 positive tumors one centimeter or smaller. All these women would benefit from adjuvant Trastuzumab, also known as Herceptin, (for one year, the standard in America) -- along with adjuvant chemotherapy.
With any Her2+ breast cancer, herceptin is recommended as it is highly aggressive, even in stage 1 and small tumors (less than 1 cm.) There have been a couple of studies that have found the recurrence rate (even when tumor is small) can be as high as 23% when chemo and herceptin is not given. With chemo alone, I think the recurrence rate was about 12-13% Herceptin use cuts that down even more to about 7%.
The progressively increasing levels of CA 19-9 are highly suggestive of pancreatic cancer recurrence, but this test alone does not conclusively prove cancer recurrence. That was why the PET scan was done to visualize where the recurrence is located. The problem with Ms. Pai's case is that the left supraclavicular node pinpointed by PET as the possible location of recurrent cancer, did not yield any malignant cells on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
You really need to ask your oncologist about the recurrence rate because there are so many things involved. What stage and grade was your cancer? Did you have nodes? Did you have surgery? If not check into DIEP reconstruction, it uses your own tissue but leaves your muscles in place and tolerates radiation pretty well. What did your oncologist tell you?

Why is it such poor prognosis on recurrence. Does this occur with all types of cancer and does it tend to be more with advanced cancers. Is chemo useful in relapse and progression compared to stable disease. Can there be remission after recurrence treatment or not. All this is confusing so if you could maybe make it a bit easier to understand.
After treatment, follow-up exams every few months during the first two years is done to allow your doctor to monitor recovery and check for a cancer recurrence. While such follow-up exams can increase anxiety around this time, it is recommended that you plan ahead by finding relaxing activities that can help redirect such fears. Discuss also the additional symptoms that you mentioned for proper evaluation. Additional diagnostic tests may also be requested. Take care and do keep us posted.
Is this what is known as endometriosis associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) or is it endometrial cancer from the endometriosis turned malignant and how do they decide? What is the difference?Apparently, this single recurrence in the pelvis is acting less like an ovarian cancer. They treated it by bowel resection, chemo and radiotherapy. No recurrences since. In the NHS, after 2 yrs free, they don't follow you up as no evidence of survival benefit in trials.

Mohs surgery has a five year recurrence rate of around 3.1% for high risk primary squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, and a 10% 5-year failure rate for cases which are already recurrent when treated with the Mohs procedure. However, the majority of these recurrences after Mohs surgery are either local recurrence (around the original tumor bed) or lymph node metastases.
m a 31 year old male and about 5 months ago I noticed 2 bump on the side at the very back of my tongue which can only been seen if I stick it out really far, I went to the doctors because I also had a whiteish or yellow patch on the top of my tongue which they thought was due to gerd (acid reflux) they also mentioned mild thrush and put my on Medican for both (the nystatin did nothing for oral thrush) so they concluded it was acid reflux.
most survival rates are for 5 years and the % is based on the Stage of the cancer. After the 5 years the survival rate does decrease somewhat every 5-10 years. These are only statistics and as individuals we are NOT statistics. Personally a statistic wouldn't mean much to me; each case is so different as is the response to treatment. I can tell you that the survival rate in all categories is rising every year and no doubt will continue to do so. Regards ..
I am wondering if perhaps they were elevated due to the beast cancer..... ? I would think to be re-tested in a few months and see where they are then.....

A search identified studies analysing HCV recurrence post-SVR. The recurrence rate for each study was calculated using events/person years of follow-up (PYFU). Results were pooled using a random-effects model and used to calculate 5-year recurrence risk. I had a double masectomy 1-1/2 years ago and have finished chemo treatments in April of 08 and now I am on Femara for about a year. My question is can I get a recurrence of cancer of some sort (i know it won't be breast) while I'm actually still using Femara?
Please post results from those who have received radiation alone without surgery or chemo. Please indicate stage when treated and length of time cancer-free or when a recurrence occurred. We have not seen positive results from people we know who have received radiation although the doctor is claiming a 90% success rate. My dad also has recurrent prostate cancer after failed radiation.
The presence of lymph node metastasis in these cervical areas causes a higher recurrence rate but not a higher mortality rate. Distant metastasis (spread) is uncommon, but lung and bone are the most common sites. Tumors that invade or extend beyond the thyroid capsule have a worsened prognosis because of a high local recurrence rate.
