Common Questions and Answers about Thyroid gland location

Avatar m tn Have you had biopsy on either of the masses on the parotid gland or the left lobe of your thyroid gland? The only connection between the thyroid gland and the parathyroids is the location in the body. They have totally different functions, but yes, you'll need a scan to find out why your calcium levels are high.
Avatar n tn Hey, your report sounded like mine. Do you have any symptoms? Pain when eating? Pain undern the jaw line? They just removed my submandibular gland last week, along with a lymph node that was piggybacking on it, and a calcified ligament that runs from the back of the right ear to the bottomw of the jaw line. There was not any blockage in the submandibular gland to cause it to enlarge or be painful, to be honest they do not know what they removed.
Avatar n tn Most of us have 4 parathyroid glands that reside directly behind the thyroid gland. The only relationship the parathyroids have with the thyroid is their location. If you have additional information regarding this parathyroid nodule, it would be helpful if you could provide it.
Avatar f tn I had the I-123 scan and uptake you suggested and here is the results. Is the location mentioned here the same as the location of the nodule in the ultrasound? How can my thyroid be " normal " with these kinds of results? Also nine weeks ago my TSH was 0.20 as shown in the post above and now it is 0.12 from the same lab. I am confused about what could be causing this. Please comment. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Lingual thyroid is a defect in fetal development that leaves thyroid tissue (often your only thyroid tissue) at the base of your tongue. At some point in the first month after conception, the tissue is supposed to drop down to the base of the neck. That's the normal location for the thyroid gland. If the thyroid doesn't descend (about 1 in 100,000 cases), it's trapped in a space where it can't function completely normally and doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.
410801 tn?1220119445 here is my report, perhaps somebody can read it for me: the thyroid gland is seen in it's normal location and is of normal size. A 3.0 mm cyst is noted in the left thyroid lobe. this small cyst was not identified on the previous examination. the isthmus is normal measuring 2.0mm Impression: small thyroid cyst, otherwise negative exam. ------------------------------- my previous exam was last Sept and both sides were enlarged due to hashi. appreciate your interpretation.
Avatar f tn Please keep in mind that the only relationship between the thyroid and the parathyroids is their location in the body; you have 4 parahthyroids, and only one thyroid. I wonder if he saw all 3 of the other parathyroids? You could have developed another parathyroid issue since the surgery. Not everyone with hyperparathyroidism has abnormal calcium levels. Yes, by all means, you should pursue the issue; it may turn out to be nothing, but I'd sure want to make sure.
Avatar f tn I have a lump on left side of neck size of a golf ball. Location is thyroid possibly. Above clavicle just left of windpipe area. moves with swallowing. Other possible symptoms include fatigue, pressure on left side when swallowing, headaches, slight cough at night not constant. Night sweats which soak my clothes and sheets.
Avatar f tn The only relationship the parathyroids have with the thyroid is their location in the body. You have 4 parathyroids, located just behind your thyroid. Your thyroid is shaped like a butterfly and there's a parathyroid gland behind each corner of the "wings" of the butterfly. That said, if you have a parathyroid issue, which it appears you might, I think you would want to pin that down prior to having thyroid surgery, in case one or more would need to be removed. Avatar f tn so last January of 2010 I went to GP and he ran just a routine blood work on me.. the results for my thyriod were Thyroid Stimulating Hormone 0.69...lab range is 0.32-5.0. and my T4 {Thyroxine} was 6.6...the lab range is 4.0-12.0. He said this was normal so i said okay and went on my way. since then my hair loss has increased and the symptoms are still there i see an endo on Oct 28th am i headed in the right direction? The test results are normal right?
Avatar n tn Thyroid gland, fna, cytology, follicular lesion with evidence of recent hemorrhage. so my question is it cancer or just a tumor, and do i need an operation or i can have medications to treat it, and is it a dangerous case or not, and if i won't have an operation could it be cancer after a while?
Avatar m tn The parathyroids have no relationship to the thyroid gland, except for the location in the body. Throat pain when swallowing and the night sweats and the leg pain could indicate a thyroid condition. Where is the pain when he eats spicy foods? That could be a gall bladder issue. The tests he needs to check thyroid function are TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and thyroid antibodies, Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab).
Avatar n tn The TPO gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase. This enzyme plays a central role in the function of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped tissue in the lower neck. Thyroid peroxidase assists the chemical reaction that adds iodine to a protein called thyroglobulin, a critical step in generating thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones play an important role in regulating growth, brain development, and the rate of chemical reactions in the body (metabolism).
487969 tn?1249313291 The heterogeneous gland structure is usually the sign of thyroiditis. As the antybodies are low, one of the following conditions may apply: De Quervain's Thyroiditis. De Quervain's Thyroiditis (also called subacute or granulomatous thyroiditis) was first described in 1904 and is much less common than Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. The thyroid gland generally swells rapidly and is very painful and tender.
Avatar n tn Red area on crotch in pubic area near base of penis and swollen gland in the groin area. The red area started with small clear bumps and are now larger yellow bumps. No itching or pain related, except if I press on swollen gland. The first time this happened was about 4 months ago and I didn't realize what it was, I thought friction burn from rubbing during foreplay. The area healed completely after 3 weeks or so. Now it is back in the same spot.
393685 tn?1425812522 They got their name because they sit behind or outside (para means outside) the thyroid gland. It is possible to remove the thyroid completely and not involve the parathryoids. They only come into the picture during a thyroid surgery when they get nicked or damaged during that surgery. I had one parathyroid gland go hyper and it had to be surgically removed. I also had my enlarged thyroid gland removed at the same time. Those were considered two separate surgeries, done at the same time.
Avatar n tn I have had 24/7 pain for over a year on the left side of my head, neck and shoulder. I just found out I have a cyst. Can a complex thyroid cyst on the thyroid gland cause pain? Also, an SSEP test came back abnormal. Could a complex thyroid cyst cause an SSEP test to be abnormal?
Avatar n tn Now I have a new growth which they suspect from the ultrasound is a thyroid nodle..... come again - no thyroid, but a nodule - does this sound right, I am struggling with swallowing again and its driving me mad! Not to mention I have been very tired, aches-pains, headaches, bowel issues and more..... Anyone had this happen or could tell me what lies ahead? PLEASE, booked to see surgeon again on March 5! That was the day I had stitches out last yr.
20874021 tn?1556489645 m seeing this referred to as mediastinal goiter), meaning when the thyroid was developing in the fetus, some thyroid tissue developed in a location away from (and unattached to) the thyroid gland. Substernal thyroid after total thyroidectomy can also occur following an "incomplete removal of a plunging goiter". Here's a case study article about two patients who had this: Int J Surg Case Rep. 2013; 4(3): 269–271. Published online 2012 Dec 7. doi: 10.1016/j.ijscr.2012.11.
Avatar f tn I had both thyroid and parathyroids removed 10 years ago due to Hashamotos disease. My numbers never responded well to synthetic replacement and I have taken Armour for about 8 years now. In the last two years I have experienced great anxiety at the silliest of times - waiting in a drive through and feeling trapped in. I spoke with two seperate doctors who both seem to think this is related to times my T levels are low and they have adjusted my medication.
Avatar f tn The first thing it means is that the nurse doesn't know how to even read a lab report. The high level of antibodies is indicative of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Hashi's is an autoimmune system disorder in which the thyroid gland is erroneously tagged as being "foreign" to the body and the immune system produces antibodies to attack and eventually destroy the gland. Along the path to destruction of the gland, there is diminishing production of thyroid hormone.
