Avatar f tn Hello. I started taking DHEA and dessicated thyroid extract a week ago. I've woken every night since then between 3 - 4 am, and stayed awake for hours. Has anyone else had insomnia as a side-effect of either (or both) DHEA/thyroid extract, and if so, has this resolved itself or persisted? Thanks for your help.
Avatar n tn As you stated that she is on Armour thyroid extract, it can be the reason for worsening of symptoms. There is secondary release of histamines which causes bronchoconstriction and choking. The Armour is known to contain animal thyroid extract which is antigenic and can elicit allergic reaction in susceptible individuals. Such extract are not preferred in elderly, esp keeping cardiac function in mind. Levothyroxine can be preferred in such cases and may reduce her breathing symptoms.
Avatar f tn A really excellent post, falldown. I might add that the TSH test does not reflect immediate thyroid hormone levels. It often "lags" by a couple of weeks. The other thing to look at is iodine intake. Falldown, you nailed that one right square on the head! These days there are people on a completely salt-free diet who end up with thyroid problems. The "idiot's Guide to the Thyroid" is very helpful in understanding thyroid problems. Another thing is to keep hydrated.

667016 tn?1238891904 I had a TT in Jan '07 & up until recently had been taking thyroxine (gradually increasing dose from 50mcg - 200mcg). Over the past 2 years I've put on heaps of weight & have been on the hypo/hyper rollercoaster, suffering from awful hypo symptoms. I've recently begun taking natural thyroid extract (similar to 'Armour' but the Aussie version) & have weaned off the thyroxine. My prescribing GP says that I'll lose weight & feel better.
Avatar m tn Your thyroid gland tissue has been replaced by thyroid nodules. Do you have any thyroid symptoms?
Avatar f tn Dear Dr Lupo, my doctor diagnosed (from symptoms and Thyroflex test) adrenal exhaustion and hypothyroidism. She prescribed dessicated thyroid extract after 3 weeks of DHEA (20mg) and hydrocortisone (12mg), to start before the test results came in (I had them done before taking the meds, apart from 3 days of HC). The results confuse me - AM cortisol 828 nmol/L; FT3 3.3; FT4 13; RT3 445. They appear to be in the normal range, though the medication has helped my symptoms.

Avatar f tn My doctor also had given me something called a thyroid extract which is made at a compound chemist. I ran out of the latter a couple of weeks ago. Mr doctor phoned a couple of days ago to tell me my TSH is now 14 and I have to double the Eutroxsig to 100mg. Last night I didn't sleep at all, because I felt like I had about 50 coffees before I went to bed! Today I took only 50mg again, because I'm convinced 100mg gives me total insomnia.

Avatar f tn Last summer (2010) I went to the doctor for gout and he had told me that because of the locatin of my gout (right foot) and the recent discovery of my thyroid problem, I could possibly have some disease that could make me not have kids. After hearing that, the side cramps got worse. I dont know if it was the medication or if it is something different. Within the past 3 months though, the pain goes from my lower right side, up through my chest and down about half way through my left side.
