Common Questions and Answers about Thyroid dosage higher

Avatar f tn Did you have the actual available thyroid hormone levels taken---Free t3 and Free t4? Free t3 corolates best with hypothyroid symptoms and many people feel better when this is kept higher in the reference range, as t3 is the biologically active hormone. You have to keep in mind that Synthroid is only t4 (storage hormone) that must convert to the biologically active t3.
Avatar f tn symptoms seem to have worsened under the higher dosage during the past month. I have extreme fatigue, sleep excessively, and feel groggy upon waking. I have postnasal drip and my throat feels swollen. I am encouraged to maintain my dosage. Has anyone felt similar reactions and developed a method of coping?
Avatar n tn FT4 is the actual thyroid hormone. It's a DIRECT measure of your thyroid status. TSH is indirect. Your FT4 was 85% of range. 50% is where most people feel best. So, yours was quite high, indicating a reduction was in order.
Avatar n tn 76) I was feeling a little bit hyper on this dosage. I was nervous, not sleeping , etc. I think that I seem to do better when my TSH is a little higher. I already had 100 mg of Synthroid, so I started taking the 100's, with the knowledge of my doctor, but by day 3, I was crying, emotional, and not feeling good at all. What does this mean? Was the 100 already not enough or should I try maybe alternating the 112 and 100, or does this mean that I need to stay on the 112?
Avatar f tn My doctor's office finally called me back and the nurse said one of the hardest things to remember in nursing school was the TSH levels because you would think if something says low you need more medication but like you said it is the exact opposite. She told me if its Low that is actually hyper and if high that is actually hypo so since mine was low they had to reduce my meds becuase I was getting too much and too much can damage your heart.
Avatar n tn I'm about to raise my synthroid myself because I can tell that my thyroid is low. I can't wait to see my doctor. Splitting a 100 mcg tablet sevens times is impossible. Would it be safe to take an extra tablet one day per week. I've read a case where someones doctor actually presscribed a higher dose one day a week. But then again some doctors are crazy. How common would it be to do this? Is it effective? Or will my thyroid bounce out of control?
Avatar f tn The cytomel dosage is 5 mcg daily. My T4 was orginally way too low but bc I had been taken a higher dosage of levo it shot thru the roof and my level was too high. Im not sure of the number. I felt fine on the high dosage but the doc said it was dangerous. Now I feel like I'm back to square one with All the symptoms a low thyroid brings. No energy, fuzzy head, weight gain, etc. The swelling in my face and neck is uncomfortable and hard to sleep.
Avatar n tn what can cause my body to need less synthroid when all was fine on my dosage of 137mcg for months before I had symptoms of being hyper. And can keeping my TSH a little higher be masking something else? I get a FNA of one of my thyroid nodules on tuesday because it is slightly bigger than in 2002. Thanks for the help.
Avatar f tn If you had your entire thyroid removed, your levels will start to plummet. I would say that you should call your dr right away and let him know so you can go get tested again right away. The thyroid is a funny thing and mine has plummeted on me before with meds and with my thyroid. So, I can only imagine how hypothyroid and exhausted you are right now. You are probably in need of higher dosage of thyroid meds.
Avatar n tn I had thyroid cancer and had a thyroidectomy a year ago. After my first scan my doc increased my synthroid dosage to 125mcg. he said a higher dosage can help prevent the cancer from recurring. About 3 mos. ago I began having heart palpatations, irregular beats, and fatigue. 2 weeks ago my doc lowered my dosage to 100mcg, but I am still having symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Does it take a while for the symptoms to dissipate?
Avatar n tn I've posted here before after expiencing bouts of what felt like hyperthyroidism - anxiety, sinus tachy, insomina, weight loss (more than 10lbs), blood pressure spikes, etc. These symtpoms have been on and off since last November (07). Since then my synthyroid dosage has been dropped from 137mcg/day to 100mcg (5 times a week). I still can not put back on the weight and recently began experiencing the racing heart (usually in the morning) - worse when climbing the stairs to work.
Avatar f tn I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have been in armour for 3 months now. I had all of the symptoms: weight gain, constipation, bloating, fatigue, dry skin, etc. Also, my hormones were completely out of whack! I had no progesterone and my estrodial was normal. I worked my way up on my armour dosage and took bio identical progesterone. ( don't have my original blood data with me right now but my tsh was 5.
Avatar m tn I recently started taking Naturethroid. My naturopath has me on 3 pills, each 1/2 grain. She said that this will be my highest dosage and she doesn't think I will need a higher dosage. I find this kind of strange since it's definitely less than the 150 mcg of synthroid I was on before....how is 3 pills of naturethroid enough? Can other people tell me what naturethroid dosage they're on or if they know the average dosage?
Avatar n tn Personally, I am happy to see that your doctor is testing your Free T3 and Free T4. The lab, however, has the old range for TSH which is sad. Most people feel better with a TSH on the lower end of the range, and the updated range is more like .3 to 3. I take 150mcg of unithroid (I did not like synthroid's fillers or colors - they gave me rashes) and 15mcg of cytomel divided into three doses.
Avatar f tn t producing enough thyroid that triggers the pituitary to release higher levels of TSH( thyroid stimulating hormone). If your dr. Only tested your TSH level suggest he/she also test your t3 and t4 levels. If they argue the point saying that's unnecessary find a real endocrinologist.
Avatar n tn I had my thyroid removed on october 24th and have been on synthroid 75 mcg since. i have been having cramps in my calves like charlie horse pain for the past week . Does this mean that i may need a higher dose of synthroid. I just went and had my first lab work done since my surgery this past week. I have noticed that I have gained some weight since the surgery.
Avatar n tn This is the actual hormone your body uses. TSH is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, when the T3 is low the TSH rises to stimulate the thyroid into producing more hormone. The TSH is produced by your Pituitary Gland located in the brain, it acts like a sensor to detect the T3 hormone, so when your levels are low, the TSH is high, when your levels are high the TSH is low. Most Hypothyroid sufferers feel best when the TSH is supressed below 1.0.
Avatar f tn I'm not a doctor and I'm not allowed to tell you what dosage you should be on. What are the exact levels of Free T3 and Free T4? Just because they are "in range" doesn't mean they are right for you. Your elevated TSH and symptoms indicate that you need an increase in medication. Typically, when one is increasing thyroid med, they go from the dosage they are on, to the next higher, available dosage.
Avatar f tn My thyroid lab test was a routine check I usually get every 2 years or so when I get a physical. The past lowering of medication was done because the thought was higher levels were leaching calcium from my bones. I have ostopenia but I have managed to increase my bone density due to exercise, I take no other meds other than thyroid. My arms and legs are ridiculously skinny, but I look like I am pregnant. I carry all my weight in the tummy. I'm 5'6 and weigh 133.
Avatar f tn I had a thyroidectomy (as a result of Graves disease and the anti-thyroid drugs not working) 5 years ago and have been stable on 100 mcg of levothyroxine ever since. A month ago I had my annual blood test and my TSH was 6.49 and I was told to increase my dosage to 125 mcg. I have had a very unusual amount of stress in the past 6 months and am having to commute 2 hours each way to work which I think has not helped at all.
537843 tn?1213664232 My last check up my TSH levels were 29.0 I am taking 200mcg daily. I was wodering how much higher can I go on the levoxyl before I start to see side effects, or will I not see any until my TSH levels finally are low enough?
