Avatar f tn In plain terms this means that the front wall of your voice box - thyroid cartilage [aka adam's apple] turns into the bone due to calcification. The article fragment explains it in medical terms: "The thyroid, cricoid, and greater part of the arytenoid cartilages consist of hyaline cartilage that undergoes calcification and ossification as part of the aging process.
Avatar m tn Being a builder im used to cuts, knocks and bangs so thought they knew what they were doing, unfortunatly my symptoms stayed and others materialised, after 3 wks and the swelling had gone down i was left with a protruding and miss-shapen adams apple (not as it was before), i had lost 60% of the upper pitch in my voice, when i swallow my thyroid cartilage clicks on the cartilage above it, food is a problem to swallow, i have to swallow again and again to get some foods down, pain still persists
5389497 tn?1367327406 I had an enlarged thyroid gland as evidenced by a large thyroid cartilage. Cartilage covers the thyroid gland and expands as the gland enlarges when you are young. I have Hashimoto's autoimmune disease of the thyroid since I was a teen but was not diagnosed until I was 33. By then, my blood levels of thyroid hormone were so low that the Dr. wondered how I was functioning.
Avatar m tn Thyroid tissue can regrow. One comment on this board was a woman who had a fully regenerated thyroid gland after 40 years! "Thyroglobulin levels should be undetectable or very low after the surgical removal of the thyroid (thyroidectomy) and/or after subsequent radioactive iodine treatments. If levels are still detectable, there may be normal or cancerous thyroid tissue remaining in the person's body, indicating the need for additional treatment.
254714 tn?1316613355 follow up neck mri with gadolinium is advised for better characterization. likely goiter left lobe thyroid glands and isthmus. clinically correlate.
Avatar m tn The neck ultrasound or MRI is needed to find out if this is thyroid nodule or thyroid cartilage lesion.
Avatar f tn They range from an inflammation of your larynx or voice box to an enlarged thyroid cartilage, or even the effects of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Having any of these problems requires that you visit the doctor immediately for a proper diagnosis. Laryngitis is an inflammation of the voice box and can occur due to an allergy or an infection like a sore throat.
Avatar n tn I noticed this weekend a big lump in neck between adams apple and base of neck; the lump moves when i swallow - went to er and it said swollen cartilage - i'm not comfortable with this diagnosis. Anyone else experienced this? thanks.
Avatar f tn I'm not sure what your question is...
8213461 tn?1397052442 I have been advised against surgery but I can live my lafe with this, it is causing me great discomfort. When I swollow my Thyroid cartilage catches on my Hyoid bone I do believe and the strap muscle at the front catches and pings because it is slighty out of line. I've heard of succesfull surgery with an inion biodegradible plate but I don't if anyone else has heard of or know of any similar cases?
Avatar f tn The popping noise is probably something rubbing against the cartilage in the front of your neck behind the thyroid - it could be thyroid nodule or goiter related, but there are other possibilities too. When you say you can feel the lump "manually" do you mean with your hand, on the front of your thyroid? Or you feel it move in your throat? I think a visit to an ENT would definitely be helpful.
Avatar n tn Hi! It's been quite a while since I posted a question here. About two and half years ago, I found out I had two large nodules on my thyroid. Since that time, I've had them biopsied and then followed and they've showed no changes. My endo was going to release me after this appt. that I had today if they had not changed again.
Avatar m tn I can't honestly remember when it started but a while back I noticed when I swallowed spit at a certain angle I would hear a clicking/cartilage (kinda like a bone dislocation sound) type sound in my throat. Only while looking down or at at downward angle. Looking down on my phone or if lying down my neck bent also to look at my phone. If I sit straight it will not do it. If I look down and turn my head either way it also will not do it.
Avatar m tn Grade I, softening of the cartilage; Grade II, fissures; Grade III, partial thickness loss of cartilage; Grade IV, exposure of subchondral bone. The problem with hyaline cartilage, which is what covers the bones inside of joints, is that it cannot regenerate itself. It has limited repair capabilities. If it does repair a small portion of the articular cartilage, it is with fibrocartilage. Fibrocartilage is sort of a scar for cartilage.
1524655 tn?1291420532 The pain has gotten less indeed. However, after reading articles about articular cartilage, I understand that articular cartilage has limited ability for healing, escpecially if its not all the way to the bone (Grade 4). Although the surgeon said "no surgery needed", I still don't undertand how things would get better... How could my grade 2 defect possibly heal, since it is not all the way to the bone?
660872 tn?1238641245 Hi, has anyone tried sharks cartilage or green lip mussels for arthritis in dogs. I recently bought some of each but have only been giving the cartilage. It's too soon to tell if it's going to work. They are both very expensive and I don't want to waste my money if other people have found they don't work.
Avatar f tn m wondering, can this be related to the thyroid in any way? I should also mention that I have no symptoms of having a thyroid problem. That I was diagnosed on a regular yearly blood work.
Avatar m tn I've got a discomfort in my neck, somewhere between my thyroid cartilage and hyroid bone, about 1 inch off of center. I'm a trumpet player and may have torn/streched something down there while playing a long strenuous passage of music about 10 months ago (Finale of Stravinsky's Firebird ballet)str. The discomfort is always present and is often greatest while playing the trumpet. The sensation is a dull tightness, as though there is a lump in the area or someone is pressing on it.
Avatar f tn Moderately thinned with full thickness denuded cartilage across the central weightbearing aspect measuring 7 mm wide x 11 mm AP. Lateral tibial plateau cartilage: Mildly thinned peripherally. No lateral joint line osteophytosis. Medial meniscus: Grossly intact. Medial femoral condyle cartilage: Mildly thinned. Medial tibial plateau cartilage: Minimally thinned. No medial joint line osteophytosis.
Avatar m tn First, off, what medication are you taking? Is it a thyroid medication? If so, which one, what dose and how long have you been taking it? Secondly, yes, it's possible for the thyroid to swell if you have Hashimoto's - it's thyroiditis... the thyroid gets inflamed/swollen (goiter). It could mean you need a higher dose of medication, since Hashimoto's is progressive, meaning that it continues to destroy thyroid tissue until the thyroid is completely destroyed and does nothing.
Avatar m tn Right Knee - There is patchy grade 2/3 chondral thinning of the medial compartment articular cartilage. Grade 2 chondral thinning of the patellofemoral cartilage. The lateral compartment cartilage is intact. Mild marginal spurring of the medial compartment. Small focus of multidirectional tearing of the body of the medial meniscus including a small radial component of tear. Left Knee - There is patchy grade 2/3 chondral thinning of the medial compartment articular cartilage.

Avatar n tn A study shows that you can regrow knee cartilage. The technique used in this study spurs knee cartilage to grow back, which could cut pain and improve knee function, wrote Kevin Stone, MD, and colleagues. Stone's study appears in The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery.
