458072 tn?1291415186 Anatomically, the thyroid sits right over your voice box, and one of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction is a gravelly or “muted” voice. When the thyroid is underactive, it doesn’t hurt to step back and evaluate how well you’re expressing your individual needs, wants, and opinions to those around you. Remember that your voice doesn’t serve to merely communicate — it is connected to your whole being. Likewise, your thyroid doesn’t simply produce thyroid hormone.

2212714 tn?1342258744 Nodules and/or goiter (inflammation and enlargement of the thyroid) can impinge on the laryngeal nerve and cause voice changes. These usually manifest as a "gravelly" voice or hoarseness or loss of a singing voice. However, I have not heard of it causing total inability to vocalize. If she knows she has nodules, she should pursue her thyroid issues. Although it may not be the only cause, it certainly could be contributing.
Avatar m tn I am a runner - had my thyroid removed - now have voice and breathing problems when I try to run. What can I do to get back to running, normal breathing and my voice back to normal.
Avatar f tn The nodules in thyroid can compress the voice nerve causing partial paresis of the vocal cords resulting in hoarse voice and hiccups .Next, the goiter is adding mass to the voice box which distorts the voice. Finally the goiter can cause compression symptoms by narrowing the trachea causing a weak voice. In that particular case, singing with the head tilted back may help.
Avatar n tn Ask for a complete thyroid workup with labs, antibodies, and an ultrasound or CT scan of your thyroid area. A sudden change in your voice could be your thyroid (or a thyroid nodule) compressing your vocal chords but they need to do more studies. Also, menopause affects thyroid hormones too (estrogen and thyroid hormones are closely related) so they need to check your thyroid levels.
Avatar f tn It can cause fungal infections, hoarseness, and temporary loss of voice. You may need to have a throat culture done to make sure you do not have a fungal infection. I am not saying that this is the only possible reason you have problems losing your voice, but I would put it at or close to the top of the list. Hope this helps!
