Common Questions and Answers about Throat infection vs strep

throat

Avatar n tn Z-pack for Strep Throat? Hmmmm. I think he/she should have probably went in the direction of a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. Amoxicillin vs. Zithromax. I have seen Zithromax ordered for Strep Throat, but not that often.
Avatar m tn Only the left side of my throat is sore. Could this be gonorrhea of the throat or strep throat? A month ago, I had gone to the doctor for strep and he said it was possible that I could be a carrier for it. I've had strep throat three times previous to this. Could this be my usual strep flaring up again, or something more?
Avatar m tn t a different type of strep. When I think of throat infection + rash I immediately jump to scarlet fever. Would that show in a strep a test? If I didn't have this rash I wouldn't be so concerned about possibilities for my ailment. That, and I'm supposed to be attending Lollapalooza this weekend in downtown Chicago. Thanks in advance!
Avatar n tn I had an initial throat swab taken in january which came back confirming strep b infection. i took penicillin for 10 days, felt a bit better for a week or so but then started feeling dizzy and sick again. had another throat swab done which confirmed strep b yet again so went on another 5 days of penicillin...this time the dizziness and stiff knees didn't go away completely and i've just had another swab confirm strep b today...
Avatar f tn Hi, the symptoms described could be due to an infection, most probably streptococcal or a viral infection. Strep sore throat needs to be treated with an antibiotic as strep is a bacteria. Viral sore throat is best treated with rest, warm oral fluids and (OTC) tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen for pain.
1179627 tn?1263936593 I was recently diagnosed with a throat infection. I suppose it was bacterial because the Doc gave me an injection-form Penicillin and a prescription of 500mg of Amoxicillin (pills). This is my second day on the antibiotic.
Avatar n tn I may be completely wrong and just have strep throat or the early stages of pneumonia (some of my friends have both of those, and I've been around them in the last few days), but I figured I would ask on here. I'm not sure what the typical time frame is for symptoms to appear, and I read that gonorrhea of the throat is typically asymptomatic.
Avatar f tn Back in May I got strep throat. I ended up getting it a total of 4 times over a 10week period. I don't know if I had become immune to all amoxicillon or not, but it finally went away mid-July. Then 1.5weeks later I had a flare up of what I thought was strep(fever, red throat, puss & canker sores). My doctor sent me to an ENT who left it up to me if I want to have my tonsils removed or just monitor it through the winter months. My tonsils are still swollen, but no sore throat.
Avatar n tn I recently had oral sex with a guy, after roughly 5 days I developed what felt like strep throat, (achy, swollen lyphnodes, extreme difficulty swallowing) so I went to the clinic. The doctor didn't take a swab, and gave me penicillin. I am now on my 4th day of 11 days of treatment and I no longer have pain by my lymph nodes are still very swollen and I still have patches of pus in my throat. Should I finish my treatment or return to the doctor?
Avatar m tn A week later I was in pain again and seen my dr. She did a quick throat culture and yep, I had strep again. She gave me a routine exam where I explained to her all of the enlarged lymph nodes I have. It seemed like all of the gland in my neck were swollen, as well as under my chin, above and below my clavicle ( for sometime), my arm pit and throughout my arms and legs. Some of the nodes I can feel and see, and others I can't.
Avatar n tn All of this just to communicate that it sounds likely to me that you have a group b strep infection in your throat.
Avatar f tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Skin infections are usually caused by different types (strains) of strep bacteria than those that cause strep throat. Therefore, the types of strep germs that cause skin infections are usually different from those that cause strep throat. They are commonly caused by staphylococcus (staph) bacteria, but it also can be caused by group A streptococcus bacteria. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn They swabbed my throat and drew blood. I am negative for mononucleosis, the flu, and strep. My CBC was normal. He gave me Levaquin. Is it possible I have a trichomoniasis infection of the throat or some STD that won't be cured by the Levaquin or Z-pack or Rocephin. Is there an STD that would cause a sore throat and high fever. My bf takes valtrex for HSV-1 outbreaks. But I don't think he was having an outbreak at the time.
Avatar m tn I was just diagnosed with strep throat by the emergency doctor a few days ago. I'm concerned about my inner nose infection. The doctor said that it could be an infection. She prescribed me Bactroban 30 grams twice and day for 5 days. I'm very concerned but would like to know if my strep throat could have caused the problem. This all may have started due to a night of heavy drinking and smoking cigarette's for my best friends bachelor party. Help would be appreciated.

Avatar m tn The strep group B can be found as a sore throat or a normal vaginal flora (except when you are pregnant it can cause problems for the baby) and sterile body sites or wounds. Strep group B may or may not cause a sore throat. If it does it isn't serious but sometimes they treat you for it because of the pain. I'm sorry I don't understand which two drugs you are talking about taking? I see you are going to take ciprofloxacin and which of the others on this list?
Avatar m tn Of course have heard of strep throat. But is this common? Is it Strep A? Any guidance is appreciated. She was put on Amoxicillin. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Did the doctor just do a strep test or did he also do a throat culture? The strep test usually just checks for one type of strep called Streptococcus pyogenes or group A strep. There are several other types of Strep that can cause a bad throat infection. So they should have done a culture too. Also, though, having the sinus issue at the same time seems to imply that you may have a viral infection. Did or do you have a high fever.

1230853 tn?1267538845 I thought i had strep throat or something because my glands in my throat were swollen into these knots and it hurts to swallow anything at all. I went to the doc's and i tested negitive for strep and mono. I just had blood work done and all i want to do is sleep... could these be symtoms of an std? if so how do i make it stop running my life.

You will need to consult your primary care physician for a strep test, which if positive you will be given antibiotics. In the meantime take plenty of warm oral fluids and rest.
