taking metformin with food

I know metformin is most effective with clomid, but has anyone had any success with just metformin. I jus started it yesterday.

When I first started taking the Metformin, I had to cut out ALL sweet food from my diet because the food would make me very nauseous when taken with the Metformin. I am currently going through infertility treatment and am doing clomid 'cycles' while taking Metformin to get pregnant. I have just completed two clomid cycles and am not pregnant yet. I would recommend taking the Metformin as it helped me (especially with the weight).

Hi jjsh44, I was on metformin for several months. Although I didn't have any luck with it, I hear many do. It's supposed to help regulate the insulin in your body to help with PCOS so that your ovaries can ovulate on their own. In my experience, the first couple of weeks were rough....I felt very nauseated after taking it, so make sure you gradually increase your dosage to get to your full dose.

Hello, I am going to ask my doctor about metformin with I see him on Wed for a Clomid check and to get more Clomid. I have PCOS I was wondering if Metformin has helped anyone lose some weight? It is very hard to lose weight, and being on provera and clomid the last 2 months I have gained some! its driving me crazy, I carry all my weight in the middle too! I have done the adkins diet and it did work great for me but I have not been able to lose weight trying it again! Thanks for any info!

It is relatively easy at the VA to switch to a different primary care physician without prejudice. It requires a written request. That being said at the VA a patient with diabetes has two physicians, plus a nurse (usually a nurse-practicioner) specializing in diabetes control. Then they assign a dietician. When the primary care physician prescribes Metformin, before issuing the prescription the patient is assigned to a pharmacist, who explains that nausea is one of the side effects.

hi as most know my story my doc has raised my metformin medication for 3x a day i have been taking them 3x now for a while. The question is if anyone else with PCOS and taking metformin have experience stomach achs a lot of acid reflex sleepyness, overall i just fee sick. I did take it with breakfast each morning. If you have problems with the regular metformin ask for the extended release version. I still needed femara to get pregnant but I am currently 13 weeks and everything looks good so far. I stopped the metformin at 12 weeks as instructed by my doctor. Ask about getting Byetta. I had the same problem with metformin. The byetta has controlled my blood sugars and my pcos.

I started to take this medication with food, but i have noticed that since i have been taking it i just cannot sleep at night, i could go to bed at 12am and still be wide awake at 5am, i had 4 days on the spin like this, so one day i did not take metformin, that night i had a pretty good nights sleep. The next day i took metformin and im back to not being able to sleep, i was wondering if this is a known side effect ?and if so what can i do , or is just a coincidence ?

I was recently told I needed to take invokana mixed with metformin and insulin. I had not been taking my metformin like I should so my readings were a bit high. But now that I'm regularly taking my meds, I'd like to know who is also and what keeps them within range. Avg bs 170s.

Other people have mentioned taking it after you eat, not with your food, or before. But, with pcos, the metformin could help everything to stabilize enough so that you could ovulate on your own.

I am Type ll diabetic taking metformin & Januvia. My levels are climbing and the Dr. is considering insulin for me. I do not want to be insulin dependent. Trying to lower with diet changes but have other health issues that restrict what I can eat. I have high cholesterol (can't take any statin drugs to lower), diverticulosis,irritable bowel, fibromyalgia and now a mouth full of braces so am unable to eat many things because my teeth do not hit together to chew.

Some meds that can cause nausea and other GI complaints are best taken with food. Eating some food usually helps with these side effects. You can ask your doctor to be certain if this could help your side effects. Plus you could discuss changing meds. BTW There is a combination pill Janumet that c ombines Metformin and Januvia. This may be helpful to you as well.

About 4 months ago, my dr. Diagnosed me with pcos. He started me on metformin once a day and gradually increased it to three times a day. I've been taking 1500mg for about two months now and I'm finally over the diarrhea stage. However, I have COMPLETELY lost my appetite. When I think of food - beef, hamburgers, tacos, chicken, anything, I feel grossed out. And I have thrown up twice and realized I had just drank a large drink of juice and soda.

Also Metformin if not taken with food. If you feel everything started around the time you switched meds its time to talk with your doctor "I was border type II diabetic" What are you now? What is your A1c test results? Do you test your glucose at home? How often? Are you at normal weight for your age and height? Do you perform physical exercise 5 times a week? You didn't give us much information to work with to suggest anything one way or the other.

I would speak to your doctor about the problem and see if they can come up with a more effective, less agonizing med to help you get your BG levels under control. (Make sure you are taking your meds with food or shortly before or right after eating....) Get exercise, drink tons of water and monitor your BG levels.

i have to workout like crazy and eat very little to get close to those and thats also with taking another med with the metformin. I would say something is very wrong with what they are trying to do.

Just Metformin is making me more nauseous and discouraging. So I eat one date fruit with every Metformin i,e just after swallowing Metformin. Is this okay?. Also I eat grapes now whenever I feel like need more energy to move around. Is that good? I lost my apetite after started Metformin. So trying to be more on fruits. To lessen the occurrence of diarrhea take Metformin with food. If it continues ask your doctor to lower your dose. If the lower does does nothing then ask your doctor to switch to one of the other oral glucose medications. A type 2 diabetic should not eat "regular" ice cream as it contains lots of sugar and will raise your glucose levels. i have been recently been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, i am 22 years old and have been prescribed Metformin 500mg which i am suppose to take twice daily with food for approx 3-4 months.

I know I can go to Diabetes classes for info but was wondering if one can eat more normally by taking Metformin? And it seemed to spike when I had a cold but the cold is gone, but not the high blood sugar readings. Anyone else affected by illness?

My doctor has me on 2000 a day. It upsets my stomach even with food. It's so bad I'm considering not taking it.

You could discuss lowering your dose with a doctor. Metformin is an insulin sensitizer and doesn't work on the food you eat like some other oral medications. There are no more risks of side effects from using Metformin if you do need or don't need but as with most medicine, there are side effects.
