Avatar f tn TPO is a little elevated as some ranges suggest that anything over 4 is symptomatic. The Total T3 is a little low. At this point, I am considering taking a Thyroid Support supplement which will boost my iodine, selenium and other useful minerals and then running tests again in 2 months. Does that seem to be a reasonable approach? Or should I be finding a doc who will prescribe a low dose of thyroid medication? Any advice would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn i just want to ask that my doctor prescribed me Synthorid for TSH ,its 6.25 and my T3 and T4 are normal. should i start medication right away or i can solve this problem by natural remidies.??? once i start medication should i need to take rest of the life ????
Avatar m tn Because body building sites and other fringe weight-loss sites tell you that you can shed weight taking T3 (and I have never heard of a liquid form for sale by prescription), those of us who have hypothyroidism while having labs that don't coordinate with established guidelines for TSH suffer from endocrinologists accusing us of wanting T3 for weight loss rather than to relieve symptoms.
Avatar f tn If so, you should have follow up testing to verify hypo. FREE T3 and FREE T4 are the actual thyroid hormones and much more important than TSH, which is a screening test at best. How do you feel?
Avatar n tn your thyroid produces and secretes the T4 hormone, some is lost by protein, then what is left is known as Free T4 is converted mostly by your liver is called T3, part of that is also lost to protein, then the remainder available for use by your cells is called Free T3, when the T3 is low, the Pituitary Gland located in the brain senses this low level, it sends its own hormone called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) to the Thyroid to "Bump" it or Stimulate it into producing more T4, s
Avatar n tn We can certainly supply you with enough scientific study data to support the need for T3 when your Free T3 level is low in the range. Do you think such info might persuade your doctor to allow a trial of T3 med?
Avatar f tn "T3 containing medications (such as desiccated thyroid or Cytomel) cause a peak in Free T3 levels a few hours after ingestion (42% within the first 4 hours), and then a decline until the next dose. [1] Even T4 medications like Synthroid or levothyroxine cause a small bump in thyroid levels a few hours after a dose (16% rise in Free T4 with no change in free T3)." - Excerpt from Tired Thyroid - Thyroid Lab Results are Affected by the Time of Your Last Dose.
Avatar m tn At best it is only an indicator, to be considered along with more important indicators such as symptoms, and also levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4 (not the same as Total T3 and T4). Of these, Free T3 is the most important to know because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. Scientific studies have shown that Free T3 correlated best with hypo symptoms, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all.
Avatar f tn In view of the importance of Free T3, you should make sure they always test for both Free T3 and Free T4 every time he goes for tests. In addition it would be a good idea to do a morning serum cortisol test, since optimal cortisol is so important. In addition since hypothyroidism so frequently results in deficiency in Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin, those should also be tested. Most importantly you are going to need to find a good thyroid doctor for your son.
Avatar n tn Were you tested for three or four thyroid antibodies? TSI is a thyroid antibody that confirms Grave's Disease, although other thyroid antibodies may also be present. Right now you should be avoiding all iodine as best you can. No kelp, seafood, soy products. You can't cut ALL iodine out of your diet, but you can avoid the obvious foods. TSH, Free T4, and Free T3 work in a "feedback loop" fashion.
Avatar f tn s continuing symptoms are due to inadequate dosage of meds, or a need for a T3 source as well, we really need to get you to post her thyroid test results and reference ranges from the lab report.
681545 tn?1318017380 You also need to have your free t4 and free t3 done. These are the actual active thyroid hormone in your body. TSH shows mostly pituitary function. Your tsh can show in normal range, and you can at the same time be lacking in thyroid hormone. Or you can have a conversion issue which will cause you to suffer hypo symptoms with normal tsh. The only way to know this is to run the Free's.
Avatar f tn You are treated by getting a prescription for thyroid. The most standard process IF, IF, IF you can convince your Dr to prescribe it at all will be a synthetic T4 medication. Typical starting doses are 50 mcg or less. If over 50 mcg I would question your Dr. WHile you may work your way up, with thyroid you have to do it slowly. Hasi is the #1 cause for being Hypo or low thyroid. And it is a progressive autoimmune condition where your immune system attacks your thyroid gland.
535822 tn?1443976780 Hi margy -- I agree with gimel; it would be better if they'd tested for free T3, because that would show what's actually circulating in your blood and available for use; however, your total T3 (depending on the specific reference range, of course) does seem quite low (based on ranges we sometimes see) in relation to your free T4, which indicates that you might have an issue converting Free T4 to T3. I'd also have to wonder if you've had an Reverse T3 test done.
Avatar m tn I got my Free T3 tested and confirmed as low in the range because my body was not adequately converting T4 to T3. My doctor at that time agreed to switch me to Armour Thyroid to provide a source of T3 along with T4. After tweaking my dosage to get my Free T4 to mid-range and my Free T3 into the upper end of its range, I felt better than I could even remember. As a way to pay back the help I had gotten on the Forum, I started participating on a daily basis.
738890 tn?1232214279 TSH is a screening test/tool at best. The "real" test for your thyroid health is the two FREE tests. Not free in terms of cost. Rather it denotes that the hormone molecule is "free" from being attached to a protein molecule. Once a protein attaches itself, the hormone becomes unusable. So you really want to get tested for BOTH the Free T4 AND the Free T3. In addition the two antibodies TPOab and TGab. (to determine if you have Hashimoto's).
Avatar f tn You should always insist on being tested for Free T4 and Free T3 in the future. Also make sure the lab attendant drawing blood for thyroid tests knows it is Free T4 and Free T3. Otherwise you might be surprised when your tests are for Total t4 and Total T3. Since hypo patients are so frequently deficient in Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin you should also get those tested and then supplement as needed to optimize.
6529153 tn?1415278338 TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many things that at best it is only an indicator to be considered along with more important indicators such as symptoms, and also levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4. Scientific studies have shown that Free T3 correlated best with hypo symptoms, while Free T4 and TSH do not correlate.
Avatar f tn Be sure they run Free T3 and Free T4, not Total T3 and T4. If they resist, just insist and don't take no for an answer. I would even go so far as to get the lab people to confirm it is going to be for Free T3 and Free T4. Otherwise they often revert to the usual, which doesn't include the Frees. Also, since hypo patients are frequently too low in the ranges for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin, I also suggest testing those as well.
Avatar m tn Synthetic and Natural dessicated thyroid. Synthetic isolates one or the other two thyroid hormones. T4 and T3. Natural dessicated thyroid is made from pig thyroids and it contains BOTH T4 and T3. The most common prescribed by Dr's today is to start with a small dose of synthetic T4 there are various manufacturers and generics for this. The T4 hormone is a "storage" hormone meaning that is it produced by your thyroid and it remains in your blood doing nothing really.
Avatar m tn 150 armour thyroid, for over a year... been on armour for 4 years labs are still whacky free t4 .56 low free t3 3.26 High tsh 1.03 normal ? testosterone is low 1.24 Low 1.75-7.81 Estrogen total serum 119.4 which is high as the range for upper limit was 115.
Avatar f tn You should try to get Free T3 and Free T4 tested, as well. Those are the actual thyroid hormones and give you a much better idea of actual thyroid status. Typically, when one is hypothyroid, one is prescribed a medication called levothyroxine, which will lower the TSH and increase Free T3 and Free T4, which will, in turn, alleviate symptoms. What, if any symptoms, does your daughter have?
