Can you get a desiccated type like Armour Thyroid, that has both T4 and T3, or can you get a T3 only type like Cytomel, so that you could take both T4 and T3?

Find an endo that sounds promising, then call their office and ask if they test FT3 and FT4, as well as TSH, if the doctor treats by symptoms and is willing to prescribe T3 medications, including both cytomel and NDT; ask if the doctor is familiar with RT3 and its treatment. If the answers are no, keep looking.

Also, your current dosage averages 57 mcg of T4 and 25 mcg of T3 daily. Since T3 is 3 times as potent as T4 that is equivalent to about 132 mcg of T4 which is equivalent to two grains of Armour (120 mg). The proposed new dosage of Armour that you listed would average only 50 mg per day, which would be a huge drop and would be far worse for you. To switch to Armour from you current med/dosage you really need to start with two grains (120 mg) and then increase from there.

Does anybody know a T3 only medicine without fillers? I was added Cytomel and my NT was reduced to 2 grains due to RT3. So far feeling awful, but I am more concern, despite all the pain and discomfort I am in, about Cytomel causing me allergies. My nose is itching and I have been sneezing. I had a similar episode a couple of years ago and I quit it. I cannot do compound pharmacy since I have to travel and it is too much trouble. Any idea about an existent hypoallergenic T3 only medicine?

usually your T4 med is DECREASED when Cytomel is started as T4 converts into T3 (cytomel) so you may be a little hyper at present. Get back to your Doc.

If there are NO symptoms of hypothyroidism, but TSH levels are high (T3/T4 normal), is it O.K. not to take Levothyroxine (or other thyroid treatment)? Husband is happy, peaceful, energetic, healthy, in shape, etc. Only "symptoms" of hypothyroidism are high cholesterol and peripheral neuropathy. Both are usually from something else and neither goes away when he takes Levothyroxine.

You mention weight as an issue and fact is - that taking a T3 Cytomel- or Armour SHOULD help with that if you are not having a RT3 issue. If you are not seeing some decrease at all - AS I - it doesn't hurt to have RT3 labs. Your low Free T3 could indicate a RT3 issue. especially if you are on cytomel. The connection with RT3 is Lepitin - a metobolism hormone - so if you are storing your Free T3's in RT3 components, we can pump any amount of T3 in us and still gain weight!

What do you all think? Is it ok that I am taking so much Cytomel? He said that my free t3 was so low that he has plenty of room to add to it. I'm still sitting on the couch any downtime I have unless there's a pressing responsibility.

If it is recommended that t4 (Synthroid) should be reduced by 20 mcg for every 5mcg of t3 (Cytomel) that is added and he has added 50 mcg of Cytomel, then he would have lowered your Synthroid by 200 mcg. if you do the math! Then that means you would be on like 25mcg of Synthroid with a dose of 50mcg of Cytomel! 50mcg of Cytomel just sounds like FAR too much! If he reduced your Synthroid by 75mcg then you should be on far less t3 Cytomel (like 15 or 20 mcg.) if using Dr. Lupos formula.

Initally - going on a T3 med - Cytomel in addition to the Synthroid - you will feel great - then crash. This applies to natural thyroid combo meds too. T3 hormone is direct - which means your body accepts it immediately. You expressed you felt aweful prior to starting Cytomel - so that says you were hypothyroid and wanted direct T3. Well, you gave the body - what it needed - but it wants more. This is proven on your FT3 lab - the only thing is this is an old lab so one can only assume.

2 mg levothroxine but recently my doc. added 25 mcg of cytomel. My T3 levels went extremely high and TSH less then 0.5. I am on 3 grains of armour, which amounts to 27 mcg of T3 (9 mcg per grain). Before switching I was taking 15 mcg on T3 (cytomel). So theoretically, despite the fact that my body has to convert the T4 to T3, then shouldn't I be getting that same type of readily available T3 in the naturethroid aside from the T4 it has in it? Does the T4 block the T3 from working somehow? Or is it the time release? It seems like I should be bouncing off the walls with all of the T3 in the naturethroid.

Trail and error asTamra said. And really - hats off to your doctor lowering the T4 while trying this new script T3 Cytomel. It better to work up slow than to push too much in and I am happy to hear your doctor is playing that safe w/ you. You may find taking the T3 med around 10 or 11 is best for you.
