The drug, already approved to treat alcohol dependence, joins the short list of pharmacologic treatments for opioid addiction, including methadone and buprenorphine. "We are always happy to have another addition to our arsenal of addiction treatment," said Petros Levounis, MD, of St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals in Manhattan.
Avatar m tn About SUBOXONE SUBOXONE is the first opioid medication approved under DATA 2000 for the treatment of opioid dependence in an office-based setting. SUBOXONE also can be dispensed for take-home use, just as any other medicine for other medical conditions. The primary active ingredient in SUBOXONE is buprenorphine. Because buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, its opioid effects are limited compared with those produced by full opioid agonists, such as oxycodone or heroin.
Avatar n tn Suboxone® (buprenorphine and naloxone) is a prescription medication used to treat opioid dependence. This medication may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are still unknown. However, it may be safer than continued use of other opioids, especially illegal ones, although methadone is usually the preferred drug in this situation.
Avatar m tn ve called every treatment center in my area that treats opiod dependence with suboxone. When I say I need treatment for tramadol dependecy they tell me tramadol is not an opiate and they don't treat for it. I reallu need to find some help. I've been tapering off but I know I'm gonna need some extra help. Does anyone know if there is another route I can go to get suboxone?

Avatar m tn Realize that opioid dependence is a lifelong condition for the vast majority of people. My opinion is just that-- my opinion-- but it is based on my own 20 years as a recovering opioid addict, and my experience treating several hundred people with buprenorphine over the past 6 years. I see many people who follow a certain pattern-- they are addicted to opioids and lose everything, then they go on buprenorphine and get their lives back....
Avatar m tn It contains Naloxone, just like Suboxone, and blocks your opiate receptors Naltrexone, marketed as Vivitrol, is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence and opioid dependence. To be effective, Vivitrol must be used with recovery programs, such as counseling. Stop looking for another magic pill to cure your ills. That's what got you where you are today.
Avatar f tn It is important to watch for signs of opioid effects in an infant in such a situation, and consider discontinuing breast feeding if signs of narcotization are present in the baby. MommaQ, you have a tough situation on your hands. The standard of care for opioid dependent pregnant women is to use methadone or buprenorphine (Suboxone). BUT I would NOT recommend either in your case, as the dose of opioid you are taking is MUCH lower than the effects of buprenorphine.
Monkey Yes, Suboxone can be used to treat pain both in patients with opioid dependence and in those without it. However, it may or may not be effective in every patient. Please ask your doctor regarding whether it will be suitable for you or not. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar f tn from the sound of things, the person will only be back in the cycle of using again, only to repeat the process. The relapse rate for opioid dependence is very high-- and the condition must be treated for life. Simply tapering off buprenorphine is not a 'sobriety plan'. Comparing the use of buprenorphine to the addiction to pain pills shows a lack of understanding for the difference between 'addiction' and 'physical dependence.
Avatar n tn Caregiver, Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence and opioid dependence. Wikipedia Are you confusing it with Naloxone? Not the same thing at all! Naltrexone is not an opiate agonist and is legally prescribed for addictions, approved by FDA.
Avatar f tn If you read my profile, you'll see that I am in recovery myself. Most of us who have been 'stuck' on opioids tried many times to stop. Eventually we were desperate enough to make it through the withdrawal, but then found that the relapse rate was very high-- and that it is very difficult to stop for good on one's own. You didn't get addicted in a couple days, and you cannot detox in a couple days either.
Avatar n tn Physical Dependence and Abuse ULTRAM may induce psychic and physical dependence of the morphine-type ( -opioid) (see DRUG ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE). ULTRAM should not be used in opioid-dependent patients. ULTRAM has been shown to reinitiate physical dependence in some patients that have been previously dependent on other opioids.
557111 tn?1219712047 Some controversy exists regarding the dependence/addiction liability of tramadol. Grünenthal has promoted it as an opioid with a lower risk of opioid dependence than that of traditional opioids, claiming little evidence of such dependence in clinical trials. They offer the theory that since the M1 metabolite is the principal agonist at μ-opioid receptors, the delayed agonist activity reduces dependence liability. The noradrenaline reuptake effects may also play a role in reducing dependence.
Avatar m tn Naltrexone blocks the effects of opioids ( that includes morphine, heroin or codeine). It competes with these drugs for opioid receptors in the brain. It was originally used to treat dependence on opioid drugs but has recently been approved by the FDA as treatment for alcoholism In a much lower doses its being used for all sorts of things MS,fibromyalgia, crohn's and many others .It going to be like any other drug .
Avatar f tn opioid dependence, constipation(which can cause severe complications), QT changes(cardiac condition), slow respirations, leading to lack of proper oxygen in the blood , there is a long list of things, but if used properly, they are less likely to cause complications. Oxycodone is known to be physically more addicting than morphine, although for people who are allergic to morphine, Oxycontin can work well. I used to switch between the two.
Avatar n tn After a week of suffering with suboxone, I took Subutex for 3 weeks and have been substance free for 3 days. I experienced increased pain without Methadone. I have tremendous pain, however, I began acupuncture approximately 3 months ago. I don't think I could be feeling as good as I do without it. I have hit some pretty bad lows during my opiate use, and really would hate for you to travel down any path that might even have a chance of being similar.
Avatar f tn I have heard that Suboxone is also another opioid that is hard to taper from. Suboxone is a newer medication that contains buprenephrine and is commonly prescribed to those looking to beat opioid addiction. However, I have read of others that use it solely for pain management. Buprenephrine also comes in patch form and it is called the Butrans patch. The Butrans patch is strictly used for pain management.
Avatar f tn Why would a Dr refuse to prescribe me subtex over suboxone for pain management if I have never admitted or reported or been caught as an opiate addict?
