I also heard that what ever you get back after 2 years is what your left with? We got the Saeboflex for the hand but no results yet on any finger movements. Please tell me what might happen in the next 6 months.
Avatar n tn My dad had a massive stroke in December of 2007. He is currently being fed by a PEG tube and I have spent countless hours researching anything that might help. I found a system called Vital Stim Therapy. The therapy uses a machine that massages the muscles used for swallowing. I believe it stimulates the area with electrical impulses. The treatment is said to be highly successful. 98% show improvement with about 35% being able to swallow and eventually remove the PEG tube.
Avatar f tn You'd probably experience (1) short-term memory problems, (2) mental fatigue, (3) trouble concentrating, (4) irritability, (5) impatience, (6) anxiety, (7) reduced problem-solving ability, (8) frustration, and (9) STRESS. Next, find a doctor who will prescribe Ritalin for say, just a week to see if that will help "brighten" the patient up (20mg to 40mg depending on body weight, 12 hour time release). What I saw with my wife and others around her was that if YOU let them just sit, the stroke patient will do just that. They will do nothing to help themselves.

We are going to try the usual remedies: prunes, cod liver oil, chia seeds, probiotics to see if that might help. Any advice on a liver friendly diet? Low iron , low in red meat? @advocate 1955: yes her liver took a beating from years of drinking, but why would a stroke cause it to decompensate?

I have been doing a lot of research on the internet on this (I've suffered for about 20 years now) and have come up with an article about these migraines/headaches being caused by early signs of heart disease. Avatar n tn We are in the minority but it seems you have done extensive research on young stroke victims as I have being a stroke survivor at age 46 .I don't understand all the anxiety and fuss about Coumadin .It is safe as long as you follow directions- blood checks monthly.Lot simpler than the recovery from stroke. Coumadin is indeed utilized in young adults with Paroxysmal a-fib to prevent stroke.

May I ask Erijon, what was your diet like, before you began the statins? Is there anybody here who ate lots of fat meat before they were put on statins?

Avatar n tn Some of what I have read here leads me to believe that a TIA is a stroke that totally reverses itself and all symptoms go away within 24 hrs. Other postings indicate that if symptoms continue or periodically return, then that is an indication that it was more than just a TIA or that there are continuing problems.

So anyway, if anyone cares to follow this theory, it means eating a non-inflammatory diet - no pizza, no fast food, skip the sugar, read In Defense of Food. The more you want to live, the better you will eat. If anyone cares to follow this theory and is having their blood drawn anyway, be sure and get CRP checked. My sis-in-law says it's very inexpensive test. I'd love to hear of any correlation or thoughts on this subject. Thanks.

Avatar m tn Good Doctors will not prescribe medication unless necessary. If I go to my Doctor and say "I feel fine", she will not prescribe anything unless a blood test states otherwise. For example, if you are rushed to hospital because you are having a stroke, do you A) have clot busting medication , OR B) say "don't worry, I will eat fruit and veg instead".

Definitely, the rash you had, the fever, the night sweats, sore throat, white tongue can all be related to initial HSV2 infection. The doctor on the HIV bulletin at first didn't understand that this was your first outbreak. Avatar n tn wow, seems so strange to me. what about your diet? had u been eating healthy for the past 10 years prior? i've heard cases where runners indulge on unhealthy foods b/c they feel that they'll burn them off running. that famous runner, Fixx, is a good example (although he had a bad family history). what does collateralized mean? did the doctor give u any explanations as to why your arteries were clogged?
