Avatar n tn My mother had a Star Edwards model #1260 installed in 1979 at Mayo Clinic and has had a few incidents in the past 20 years, the most recent was this week, she had a loss of speech which put her in the hospital this week, they are calling this a mini stroke but no damage detected on the cat scan. She was admitted with an INR of 1.5 and has had a few tests that are showing something around the valve. She is already on 10 mg of coumadin a day but nothing else for anticoagulation.

238668 tn?1232732330 The cardilogist is recommending to replace the Star Edwards with a St Jude to lower her risk of stroke. When I called Mayo they said they would put her on the right anti coagulation program and watch her very carefully but did not recommend surgery. What steps should we take to resolve this varrying opinion, we are so confused. Are we playing russian roulette by not getting that Star Edwards out of her? Does it really buy her anti coagulation hope by putting a St Jude in her?

667923 tn?1421462724 I have been experiencing intense pain, numbness on the whole left side of body. The weakness has been so bad that I can't even move my left hand or foot.I felt like a 40lb. weight was laying on my hand and foot to keep it from moving. I felt like I was having a stroke and after doing research on it, I did. Maybe it was an Ischemic attack or TIA. I have had 3 or 4 of these attacks and don't want to wind up having a full blown STROKE.
Avatar f tn Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. (if only one side of the smile raises that can point to a possible stroke) T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. make me a bowl of Chicken Soup) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. Avatar m tn Hi, emotional changes are typical after any type of stroke. Right after a stroke, a survivor may respond one way, yet weeks later respond differently. Emotional reactions caused by a stroke are different from normal emotional reactions. The reaction may have little or no obvious connection. Your father may be going through these changes. Support and understanding will help them to tide over till recovery. Good luck with his therapy. Regards.

Avatar f tn The neurologist said that the spot on the pons should have been more defined if a stroke (besides other symptoms don't match). It was kind of fuzzy looking like a cloud or smudge. I am not too good at describing it but it was kind of large. Dr kept drawing with his hands what a stroke should look like. Anyway, fever has been lower but not normal. It was 99.1 tonight and 99.5 this morning.
