Stroke recovery programs

Common Questions and Answers about Stroke recovery programs

Avatar n tn Everyone please remember, they can hear you and need to be kept informed with what is going on not just with their recovery, but also family issues, the weather, success stories about stroke recovery etc. Strokes cause extreme depression so it's good to constantly reinforce that they are not fighting alone and that you are striving to help them improve. We have combined an arsenal to fight for my father's recovery. Prayer, faith, hope, love, energy healing, research etc.
Avatar n tn It is a glorious sunday and I just spent three hours with my sweety-pie. Thinking back to when we had an agency in, and the many things that were done that caused her displeasure I will discuss them. First, was the "rule" that she be snugly strapped in her little wheelchair at all times. I concede this may be necessary when outdoors, but within the apartment, where she is always attended, it is totally unnecessary. She always grew annoyed at the strap.
Avatar n tn I don't know about your area, but there is an excellent rehab hospital in Washington DC, National Rehabilitation Hospital that is state of the art in their programs for recovery as well as neurological research. They have a website, and may be able to refer you to an agency in your area. I tried to help my husband with walking, recommended exercises, etc., but found it difficult to make it a regular practice (I work full time).
10996785 tn?1432816577 From the beginning I've had problems with my medication. My throat swelled shut from Eefexor. Next pneumonia, struggle for 2 weeks. Next a stroke that I'm still recovering from. I just can't take it anymore. All these problems that I've tried to overcome and I still have a serious anxiety problem that is knocking the life out of me. I may go back on a benzo. Possibly Ativan or klonipine <sp) I hate to do this. My clean time means the world to me right now.
Avatar m tn My first panic attack landed me in the ER...I thought I was having a heart attack or stroke. (I know many have been there...and even though the Dr. says you are physically healthy...being left with the knowledge that your mind can make you panic so severly only compounds least it did for me.) I consider myself lucky to have happened upon an ER doctor with a very kind heart who went above and beyond.
544292 tn?1268886268 Welcome Tram Warriors! Part 60. Wow. Over the years of recovery and reading about others, seeing others recover the main thing I have learned is that everyone's life is better without being a slave to Tramadol. You might be stuck and scared right now, but you can make the decision to get yourself off the hamster wheel of Tramadol dependency and even addiction. You don't have to live that way. There's lots of people here to help.
544292 tn?1268886268 Hi Tramadol Warriors, Many people have come here for many years, giving support and getting support. Because I still believe that Tramadol is unique in it's ... terror and torture of humans, this thread continues. The people who can understand what you are going thru are the people who have kicked it and there's people here who come back to lend a hand. You also will never need an understanding ear as much. You can do it. You can quit. You do not need to be a slave to Tramadol.
Avatar n tn I was able to return to my job within a month of the stroke. I know that I am very luck as a stroke patient and I'm very thankful for that. But I do have some residual effects that will likely be with me the rest of my life (weak/heavy/tingly left side, minor equalibrium problems if I turn too fast or bend over) What I'm hoping to get help with is, finding a good source of information for an exercise program I can do at home and/or the gym to optimize and improve my health.

Avatar n tn I had a full blown stroke in May of 2006 and had zero movement in my right arm and hand, and minimum movement in my right leg. I went through physical and occupational therapy until September 2006 where I was discharged since I was already at the peak of recovery, driving and doing computer work. However, being back to work from that time made me forget doing the exercises I was supposed to continue.
Avatar n tn The most recovery usually occurs in the first 3 months post-stroke, then some recovery still takes place afterward but the bulk of it would have already taken place. By that time, you will have a pretty good idea whether she is capable of taking care of herself and/or the baby. She will need extensive physical, occupational, cognitive and speech therapy while in rehabilitation.
Avatar n tn Hi - My Grandma had a stroke on 12-27-07. She was in the hospial for a week and a half. She started acute rehab on 1-8-08. She has completed 4 weeks. When she went in she was totally dependent which they call max dependent. She is on a feeding tube and cannot talk. For the first 2 weeks there, she had some problems with getting the amount of water the doctor perscribed through her feeding tube. The last 2 weeks she has finally started making progress. She still cannot eat or talk..
Avatar f tn Hi, I can understand your worrying concerns about recovery. Unfortunately, rehabilitation is the only effective way to help the patient regain function to the possible extent and prevent from permanent losses. If rehabilitation program is appropriately instituted, most of the patients can regain maximum functions with appropriate therapy, training and support services.
Avatar f tn Yes, it can and will be hard to get in....but it's available. Along with na aa smart or other recovery programs. Addiction is a progressive disease. I've never known an addict that got this disease overnight. Same as heart disease or lung disease. Addiction is a complex disease tho because it's both physical and mental. It's known as both. A lot of professionals will tell you it's a mental illness. With a twist. We come to medhelp asking for help with good intentions.
Avatar m tn What is the typical recovery time? If they have trouble walking now will the rehabilitation be an isssue?
Avatar n tn One study looking at long term changes in aphasia after stroke found that in a moderate size stroke, recovery of language function stabilized at 6 weeks and in severe strokes it stabilized at 10 weeks. Beyond this time frame, little change was noted in the patients language function. In summary, initial severity of the stroke was the only clinically relevant predictor of outcome. Another study looking at stroke rehab found that patients with moderate defecits benefited from focuses rehab.
Avatar n tn But it was hard on her for about a year. She had a stroke during the surgery, she did get better. She had hers at Duke University. It has been about 8 years ago. She is 47 now. I hope he does well, I will remember you both in my prayers.
Avatar n tn There are many things that you can do to help yourself in the privacy of your own home, without meds, which is the way I am approaching my recovery. I hope this helps you. I wish you the best with your recovery, and hope you felt well today!
890900 tn?1284580903 The only reason I don't is because my current team of doctors have my pain under control to my satisfaction with extended release pain medication as well as quick acting pain medication for breakthrough pain. I am also very involved in my own recovery and don't rely on Physical Therapy alone like most people do. In the end you know and have to do what is best for you. I do understand the approach your doctors are taking due to your age but you have been through quite a bit.
