Common Questions and Answers about Stopping plavix for surgery

plavix

255163 tn?1376869746 Following this I was on Plavix for 3 months. Another patient in the same cardiac rehab class was the same - Plavix for 3 months, and yet another is still taking Plavix and has been told to continue taking it. Maybe a difference of opinion with our ccrdiologists although maybe it depends on what type of stent you have .
Avatar f tn Which is the greater risk, bleeding from a needle biopsy or a possible blood clot as a result of stopping the Plavix? Thank you for any advice you can give me.
Avatar n tn Thanks for your answer. My cardiologist mentioned stopping the warfariin and going with lovenox for 3 days prior to a cathererization but said there was no need for plavix to be stopped.

Avatar f tn I talked to my cardiologist and he said he had talked to the surgeon and for me to come off the Plavix for 10 days. Three weeks after stopping Plavix for the surgery I was back in the cath lab and had a stint inserted. I do not come off Plavix for any reason now. I have 6 stints in my heart and one in my neck. Last week they would not remove my cataract because it was only 3 months since I had 2 stints inserted in my heart. Could not do it until six months had passed. I had open heart in 2004.
Avatar f tn We were told that he needs bypass surgery and it has been scheduled for March 11. The doctor said he needs to stop plavix 7 days before. I'm worried because he just will have had the stent put in at just over 3 weeks.
1210142 tn?1266077031 Now it is agreed I stay on plavix for life. I have now been on plavix for 5 years (less the three months I was taken off) and no problems.
Avatar n tn Jan. 06 I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery, before I was to be cleared I had to have a stress test...The doctors found a blood flow problem and found I had 4 blockages...I had 3 medicated stents put in and the fourth was 100% blocked, doctors were not overly concerned as they have noted that in prior cases the artery where that blockage is have branched off and created a new entrance to the heart...Here I am 2 years later, still needing hip replacement...
Avatar n tn If they were drug eluting stents, your wife should have been given plavix for a year minimum. If she has never been on this medication, then the question is answered.
Avatar n tn My neurosurgeon says I need to go off Plavix for 6 weeks prior to surgery. I am very concerned about going off Plavix since past thrombosis and nearly dying. Can someone tell me the risk percentages for thrombosis if you had it prior. My wife would like for me to hold off of surgery until absolutely necessary or they come up with more info on Plavix. Thank you for your help.
Avatar n tn t think it causes an existing stent to block. There is no evidence to suggest there is any benefit for taking plavix for more than a year, and this is the protocol which still stands in the UK. I've had 10 stents and stopped plavix after a year each time, with no stents becoming blocked. There is also a suggestion that plavix does absolutely nothing for women. There are other medical conditions which can mimic heart issues very closely, especially if something is pushing on the vagus nerve.
Avatar n tn I had a MI about 5 years ago and has a couple of DES inserted. I've been on Plavix for over 5 years and had Thallium stress tests each year, plus a few 2D echocardiograms. All is exceptionally good..no pains..and I exercise regularly quite vigorously. I'm 62. At my last examination/testing etc, my Dr said I could stop Plavix based on recent data. Just checking...are the Plavix meds doing any good at all after 5 years?
315318 tn?1353251800 I came off plavix and aspirin for 3 days. 2 days pre and one day post with no problems. Are you really on 320mg aspirin a day? that sure is a lot. Does this give you gastric problems?
976897 tn?1379167602 The cause is unknown as yet. So, I would advise anyone due for angioplasty to discuss with their gp stopping any acid reflux meds currently being taken.
Avatar m tn I also wonder about the need for procedures like colonoscopy or other such procedures where the Plavix may cause a concern. Any thoughts?
Avatar n tn for AFib clotting/strokes. I don't know why your doc preferred to prescribe Plavix for DVT. But prasugrel and ticlopidine are next generation drugs of the same kind as Plavix. Maybe they'd have fewer side effects than Plavix. Another new anticoagulant (with a different MOA) that isn't so well known is based on... leech saliva!
Avatar n tn There are 3 serious medical conditions (right-side heart failure, uncontrolled bleeding, and clots (pulmonary embolism and thrombosis) that requires consideration when prescribing medication. Anticoagulants are effective in preventing pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, but there is a risk for bleeding. More than 80 percent of patients with massive PE die within the first two hours after onset, mainly from right-sided heart failure.
Avatar m tn One cardiologist recommended ending Plavix entirely, second (same practice) would rather wait for a large study about to be completed. Suggestions? This discussion is related to Non-cardiac surgery after Taxus Stent and Plavix.
Avatar m tn The Gastric Bypass requires me to be off of Plavix for 7-14 days. My cardiologist is opposed to discontinuation of platelet therapy for a short time in order to have a proceddure. I want to know why it is recommended to remain on plavix for a minimum of 12 months after the stent? Does the risk of thormbosis decrease so significantly at 12 months that it is worth the risk of another Major Cardiac Event?
Avatar n tn Both my mom and dad were on plavix. When my mom needed surgery, she was taken of the plavix for awhile. However, when my dad needed surgery, he was kept on it. Your doctors need to make that decision. Good Luck! Wishing you well, and wishing you enough...
Avatar m tn Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Is there anyway to remove these polops while on Plavix ?
