There are more facts that you can read about if you google 'Depo-Provera Facts and Side Effects'. If you have serious anxiety or depression, this may not be the birth control for you ~ speak with your doctor about this first before you decide...
Avatar f tn Irregular menstrual periods, or no periods at all Headaches Nervousness Depression Dizziness Acne Changes in appetite Weight gain Excessive growth of facial and body hair Hair loss Loss of bone mineral density Most of the side effects are not common. Change in the menstrual cycle is the most common side effect. You may experience irregular bleeding or spotting. After a year of use, about 50% of women will stop getting their periods. Avatar f tn Pregnancy occurring during the use of the shot is usually an undetected pregnancy before the shot is given. One of the side effects of Depo-Provera is irregular menstrual bleeding. 50% of women will stop getting their period after 1 year of the shot. The period usually returns after stopping the shots, however, it can take 3 months to a year for the effects of Depo-Provera to wear off and fertility to return.
Avatar f tn Provera is derived from the female hormone progesterone. You may be given Provera if your menstrual periods have stopped or a female hormone imbalance is causing your uterus to bleed abnormally. Provera is also prescribed to prevent abnormal growth of the uterine lining in women taking estrogen replacement therapy. Other forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and prescribed in the treatment of endometrial cancer.

Avatar f tn I will try it but I am so sensitive to all medication side effects. I had issues on Sprintec. The dr said if Provera doesnt work its either Lupron or Hysterectomy. I dont want a hyster so I may have to try Lupron. Thanks for your input.
Avatar f tn I've been on Depo Provera for almost a year but i've decided to not get my next shot in two weeks i'm not wanting to get pregnant anytime soon but I'm wondering how long will it take for the Hormones to leave my body and what kind of side effects should I expect?
Avatar f tn i decided to not go on any other birth control for awhile. What are the side effects of coming off the Depo Provera and is it ok to not be on any birthcontrol at all for awhile??
1714443 tn?1309687971 More than likely she was given depo provera.....if she hasn't gotten the needle again since Feb then it's more than likely worn off by now. http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn Quick question... which Depo are you on? There are two kinds, that I'm aware of: Depo Provera or Depo Lupron. I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it. The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
Avatar n tn So far I have not started to spot and have been feeling nauseous, is nausea a common side affect of stopping the depo or could it be something else?
Avatar n tn nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, headaches, etc... I once had the same experience that you've described while I was on Depo. I was convinced that I was pregnant, so I went to my doctors office to take a blood test to get a more accurate answer (hpt's all said negative). It turned out that it was the Depo causing these symptoms. Unless you've already done so, I would suggest speaking with your doctor/gynecologist about how you're feeling and ask about what they advise...
Avatar n tn Hi! If you were my patient, I would advise you that the effects of depo provera can last for up to 18 months, so "abnormal" periods for up to that long can be normal. I would suggest that you start doing ovulation predictors once you have a normal period and if you are not ovulating regularly, you could start a medication like Clomid to overcome the after effects of the depo.
Avatar f tn it depends on why you aren't getting your period but in general its hard to get pregnant without a period because you would probably ovulate randomly but its not impossible so since you don't have a period you would need to take a pregnancy test 2 weeks after the last time you had unprotected sex
Avatar f tn Can the depo-provera shot be given in between periods and still be affective? What would the effects of this be?
Avatar m tn Agreed. I even missed periods when I was in the throes of my addiction to opiates (heroin). A lot of people don't know that it can stop the menstrual cycle. That may be why everything is all messed up now. For instance, I had hypothyroidism while on the Depo but now have hyperthyroidism now that I'm off of it and no longer using (My anniversary date is 10/2011).
Avatar n tn Breakthrough bleeding and really long periods are common side effects on depo provera. It's actually one of the reasons most women stop using it. Unfortunately, because it's an injectible birth control method, there isn't much you or your doctor can do if you are having unpleasant side effects. You just have to wait for the 3 months to be over and your body to either adjust to it, or to see if it just won't work for you.
Avatar f tn I then continued with all of the symptoms and still am now almost 3 months later, after going to what it seemed like a million doctors, having a million test ran, finally a new OBGYN, who was awesome, told me that I am having severe withdrawals from being on depo provera so long and all of a sudden stopping cold turkey, she said that I should have been weened off of it with some other low does of hormone.
Avatar f tn Hi I was wondering if anyone experienced negative side effects from the depo shot? Normal birth contrl pills make me extremely nauseous due to the estrogen, and I can't tolerate it. From my understanding depo does not contain estrogen?
Avatar n tn My girlfriend started using the depo-provera shot about a month ago. We abstained from sex for a week after the injection just to be safe. Two weeks after the injection we had to make a visit to her family practice doctor because we had a hunch that she had a bladder infection. We were right. The doctor prescribed her to take 250 mg of Ciprofloxacin twice daily and of course Phenazopyridine for the pain.
Avatar f tn My gynecologist recently informed me that she suspects that I MAY have PCOS due to my lack of ovulation and heavy menstrual cycles. So she has prescribed me depo provera in order to control my heavy bleeding. (My periods have ALWAYS been irregular since I was 11 and it's very common for me to miss 2- 3 months of a period and then to experience heavy bleeding for over a month!) But they did a vaginal ultrasound and found NO cysts! They said my uterine lining was a little thick but NO cysts!
Avatar n tn Hi my name is Marie and i was on depo provera in May 07 and i had my periods in december. It was regular and my last period was in March 08. Since then i never got my periods again. Im confused and lost. Sometimes i take pregnancy tests and they all come out negative. So i really dont know what's the cause. I really need some help and answers! Recently i had sex with my boyfriend and my periods are still not here. But i feel tired and moody from time to times.
505857 tn?1329681517 I was on depo for 3 yrs, and luckily got AF the first month off depo. Personally, I believe if you are having regular periods, you need to buy some ovulation predictor tests, and see if your even ovulating. They're pretty expensive but you get alot of them, just test each day....etc. what the directions say on the box. That way you'll know if it's because your not ovulating... or whatnot.
Avatar f tn Did anyone stop Depo provera? If so, when did your periods regulate themselves again? A lot of women don't get a period for a couple of months. I started bleeding a week after my Paragard insertion which was 13 weeks from my last Depo shot. Help!

Avatar f tn I think you should talk with you doctor to see whats going on and also that you should of check out the side effects before getting on the Depo Provera shot because Deop can cause Irregular, heavy, or no bleeding are common side effects of Depo Provera. After a year of use, many women stop having periods. Lack of a period becomes increasingly common with longer use but since your period hasn't stop you should see your doctor.
Avatar n tn The Depo is one of the most effective birth controls on the market, but has some side effects that put women off. (I'd never personally use it. I went with a non-hormonal IUD) Side effects you might get are odd spotting, heavy/lighter than normal periods and over time no period, weight gain (this is a real common one) headaches, breast tenderness and a few other I can't think of. You can google for a proper list of side effects and the number of women who experience them.
