Avatar n tn The natural course of emphysema is one of increasing shortness of breath. That is what you should be looking for. In some instances, progressive respiratory failure is accompanied by depression, personality changes, memory loss and a decrease in cognition. This all can be most uncomfortable but, especially in the final stages, can be significantly improved by the judicious administration of narcotics. Many doctors are reluctant to provide this kind of relief.
8016255 tn?1396293364 My mother died in middle of a big smile of either heart disease, stroke, kidney failure. My father died of what was told to us of lung cancer, but he had brain cancer, a heart attack, liver cancer, caused by prostate cancer. I'd simply center on keeping the family in comfort unless you think a crime was committed.
7052683 tn?1392938795 This is soooo sad. Believe me I have volunteered in Rescue a long time and, elderly cats especially, will wither and die if they are taken to a shelter. They just do not know what is happening the one they loved so much has left them in this place to die? So If you LOVE your furballs, as I know we all do, PLEAS think NOW about making arrangements for them. Do not just leave them. Some have been found in homes after their owner has died and are near death themselves with no food . OH!

Avatar f tn I'm living it right now and to be honest, I am aware of 5 to 7 steps or stages of the grief process, but they don't matter, because you survive one day at a time ....baby steps, and not time frame, since everyone heals at their own pace. It's been 2 years for me and I do feel better, but I am not yet completely healed...it takes a long time.
1348086 tn?1370783185 In college, I had a really bad panic attack in the middle of a lecture, there were over 200 students in the room, I was sitting just a couple rows from the prof, right smack in the middle, I created quite a scene trying to collect my things and run out of the class in front of everyone. It happened a couple more times, soon I stopped going to class, then to school, then leaving my appartment, out of fear of having more attacks in public. But the only way to get out of it is....
1000946 tn?1253807847 If you conducted pulmonary tests on all the elderly, would you find that the majority showed some signs of COPD? In those cases would it simply be a sign of aging? We know that peak flow declines with age. Isn't this, in itself, an indication?
Avatar f tn My 82 yr old grandmother was rushed to er room 22 days ago - she was in a nursing home because of diabetes which will go from 40 to 500 in an instant and the beginning stages of dementia. She had a heart attack in the ambulance and it took 2 mins to revive her. She stayed in ICU on a ventilator for 11 days. During that time she had a chest tube put into her left lung for a hole that showed up and fluid retention.
Avatar n tn Sorry to hear of you father's unfortunate outcome of an aneurysm repair. Its difficult to assess a surgical outcome without more detail. The risk increases if there are serious health problems, which may be more likely in some individuals especially if they are very elderly, may increase the chances of having complications during aneurysm surgery. If your dad's general health is good, however, the age alone is not a reason to avoid necessary aneurysm repair.
1831849 tn?1383228392 Let's see, I believe there are strict controls regulating the initial doses of Gilenya. Therapy is initiated in the physical presence of health care professionals who monitor heart rate for six hours because it is usual for the drug to cause a slow or irregular heart rate. True? So people with known heart problems are usually excluded as candidates for Gilenya. Right? And still we are supposed to be surprised when cardiac complications and death occur soon after starting this drug?
Avatar f tn Stage 1 is considered a small amount of fibrosis. Stages 2 and 3 is considered a greater amount of fibrosis or scarring meaning the disease has progressed. The more fibrosis the harder it is on the liver to carry out it's functions. As the damage progresses further, many scars can form together, which can lead to stage 4, or cirrhosis.
Avatar f tn Although I have worked with doctors and nutrition and am elderly myself, you need to have your doctor schedule a visit with a nutritionist that specializes in elder care. Not eating is a big problem with the elderly and lack of nutrients leads to illness an even death in some cases.
Avatar n tn Risperdal is a so-called "blacklisted" drug because of the high incidence of fatalities in the elderly. It is not approved nor appropriate for a use in an "agitated" eighty year old patient. The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.

Avatar m tn Thank you so much for the information you provided. I had no idea that the blood turns black when a person is bleeding internally. My grandmother is a very difficult, secretive person and will not tell me nor my mother how she is feeling, if she is in pain she would never tell us for the fear of us putting her in a nursing home. That's her paranoia. If I sounded cold or heartless regarding how long she will live with CHF, I certainly didn't mean to.
Avatar m tn Is the question "Did the person fall as a result of a heart attack"? Because in that case, no, I don't think you would be able to tell at first. I agree with Ed, you would have to perform an autopsy to know for sure the fall was the result of a heart attack.
Avatar f tn People think that since Medicare covers medical services for people over 65, it also pays for nursing home care for elderly people. Medicaid is thought of as a poverty program that provides medical coverage to poor families. But Medicaid is the program that provides long-term care to the elderly and disabled, which accounts for 31 percent of the program's $400 billion annual federal and state spending. Most of the nation's 1.
Avatar f tn ago, why she has never been referred to a liver specialist. She is in Florida - Broward Co. My sister says her doctor is in a state of the art facility there and she feels she gets excellent care. I don't have much say in regards to my sister as she has never come clean with her diagnosis, but I know enough that she is turning a new corner in this condition and she should start taking things more seriously.
