Avatar n tn A patient with mild hearing impairment may have problems understanding speech, especially if there is a lot of noise around, while those with moderate deafness may need a hearing aid. Some people are severely deaf and depend on lip-reading when communicating with others. People who are profoundly deaf can hear nothing at all. In order to communicate spontaneously and rapidly with people, they are totally reliant on lip-reading and/or sign language.
193609 tn?1292180293 She said that they do educational speech therapy and that Ashtyn needs Clinical speech therapy. Is there anything that would be as helpful as speech therapy since my insurance wont cover it and the ISD doesn't do the speech therapy that he needs? Ashtyn is very behind in almost all communication skills. I don't know what else to do for him, and no one can help him!

500419 tn?1220124743 My son had a speech delay they recognized at 18 months after he had tubes put in his ears around the same time. I took him to speech therapy at "Columbus Speech and Hearing." They first did a hearing check to make sure everything was ok. Then autism was another good thing to look into. Their first plan of attach, though, was "early intervention" with speech therapy one day a week for a half hour at "Columbus Speech and Hearing.
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
Avatar f tn He should be receiving free speech therapy. I would definitely have him tested. Some of his behaviors reminds me of autism. I am just a mom. I hold no degress in this area. But, I would not enroll him in school at five but I would for sure demand the testing be done. Call your state board of education. You may have to put the request in writing. They then have 30 days to respond.

Avatar m tn I went to my speech therapy this morning. She had me saying ahhhhhh, ooooh, eeeeh and reading from what looked like a grade second reader. The she made a mistake. She said, "Tell me a little about yourself." Now, being a complete windbag I went into a dissertation that rocked her back on her heels. She kept asking me to take a deep breath as i talked.
1415407 tn?1389254933 but rather the individual issues that come along with it such as speech delay, OT delays, communication impaired, sensory integration, PT delays, etc. Of course, in many cases a diagnosis of being on the spectrum does occur, but in cases where it is not definitive, these other diagnosis would still get your child some of the therapies she needs. It is wonderful that you have a clinic to guide you through the process.
Avatar f tn My 4 year old granddaughter has obvious speech problems. It is very hard to understand her. Her speech patterns have also changed. She used to call her mother "Mama-ee" and now she calls her "Mahee". She cannot pronounce her own name, Meaghan. I want my daughter to get her a hearing test and she says she does not think she has a hearing problem.
Avatar f tn Hi my sister-n-law had triplets and then another set of twins. All premie's and all with delayed speech. By age 2 they all had a speech therapist work with them because of weak mouth/tongue. Within a short period of time they all had advanced in their language skills. The therapist said with some mouth exercises they have really caught up. They are now 6 and 3 yrs old.

Avatar f tn I have never encountered this problem personally but several of my friends had children who stayed silint for no good reason and then suddenly started speaking. Of course he must start speech therapy as already suggested. I don't know if this will help in addition, but when my kids were small, as they were learning new words, I took their hands and placed one on my lips while i repeated a word, and then on my larynx so they could see how the sound was made.
Avatar n tn With the language delay, at the very least they should be calling the school district - they can evaluate the child for delays at least on an educational level, and the state provides services such as speech therapy. The pedi is the place to start as far as medically (they can also go this route to get private speech therapy, which it sounds like he needs). They can refer him to the correct specialist for another diagnosis. Definitely talk to the parents.
Avatar n tn We are going to get him speech therapy next month and he is having his hearing tested again. We just want him to say just one word!
Avatar f tn suggested occupational therapy then speech therapy. She said that some kids who have speech delays are showing some Autistic traits that will disappear later on. My husband doesn't want him to start any therapies yet because he said he's still young & he wants to give him a time because he believes that it's not Autism. We enrolled him to a toddler class instead so he can interact with other kids because he's our only child & he doesn't have playmates.
Avatar n tn I live in Delhi, India and My pediatrician suggested me to consult speech therapist and I visited speech therapist also. Avatar f tn My sister had a health visitor come to see her but she wasn’t able to give many answers. She has been referred to speech therapy now. But we were warned that things like proper discipline or potty training are useless until my niece can speak and understand words. She’s also still drinking from a baby bottle and will only really eat soft food. But as we were warned it will be very hard to change these things as we can’t explain things to her.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm a 40 year old female with severe mixed hearing loss in my right ear since birth--cause unknown, 7 weeks premature. I found out a year ago that I'm now losing hearing in my left ear as well. I went in for testing again last week and found out I'd lost another 5 db on the left since my test last year. I am also in treatment for TMJ which I discovered because of ear pain and pressure from my lower jaw pushing back towards my ears.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thanks again for getting back to me. Your words are reassuring. We had a hearing test done with her yesterday to rule out that being a cause, but as i suspected, everything was just fine. The community paediatrician said he feels it is something that will come in time, but if things do not improve to go back and they will take things from there - whether that means speech therapy i don't know.
