Common Questions and Answers about Speech therapy evaluation form

speech

Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
Avatar f tn So, we are seeing her every other week for behavioral modification therapy and she is lining up speech therapy, occupational therapy, and they are going to help us get insurance approval for ABA therapy, and we are starting floortime at home. I am better now because I know that there is help out there, and he is high-functioning and extremely intelligent. They are telling us that the prognosis is good because he is so young and we are going to be agressive with his treatment.
Avatar f tn There are different reasons for articulation problems. Sometimes it is just a speech delay and speech therapy can correct this. Or it could be a oral motor problem related to the sensory system. (my son has sensory integration disorder and was diagnosed at 4). How are the other parts of your son's speech? There is receptive and expressive language that are really important as well.
Avatar n tn With the exception of lining things up she seems to play appropriately - feeds a doll, stacks blocks, loves to look at books. She began speech therapy and after 5 sessions the speech therapist said she thinks she has characteristics of autism because she lines things up and seems to have a fixation with the buckle on the chair (she likes to snap it shut herself).
Avatar n tn Hi, Brain injured patients may receive rehabilitation that involves individually tailored treatment programs in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, physiatry, psychology, and social support. A complete physical and neurological examination is needed in each treatment program. It would be best to discuss which treatment option is best for you with your doctor for proper evaluation and management. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn If you are concerned, you could call your doctor and be referred for a speech evaluation or go through an evaluation through your local school system now that he is three. My older son was evaluated for speech concerns at almost 4 and the speech pathologist concluded he would self correct as his articulation issues were all within normal for his age group. If they hadn't been, we would have started speech therapy. It never hurts to find out. (in my opinion.
Avatar m tn Experts usually state that Asperger's children talk early and well but are not social with other kids like their peers. I am not an expert but if he is not talking at 3, he probably does not have Asperger syndrom. He might have something else in the PDD spectrum. Asperger's children are like "little professors" when they speak. They do speak well but are not social. They also have extreme interests in certain topics or things. They will, for example, love trains.
Avatar n tn Hello, my son will be 5 in Nov and I've been reading up alot on Autism lately and I think he may have it. The symptoms he has are speech delay which right now he's in pre k and he recives speech therapy 2x's a week, but also since hes entered pre k his speech is getting alot better, he's always in his own world, he chews on everything you can think of and sometimes i dont even know if he knows hes doing it.
Avatar n tn The best way to proceed would be to arrange a comprehensive developmental evaluation, including cognitive, social, emotional, fine and gross motor. Speech/Language and Occupational Therapy (particulally to address sensory integration problems) should be included in the evaluation.
Avatar f tn My son was the same way! Couldn't speak but could understand everything. At his 2 yr appointment our doctor brought it to our attention and gave me then number of ESA (Educational Services Agency). They evaluated him and we started speech therapy at 2. About 4 months in there was no improvement and so they did another evaluation and said that they believed he had Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Which is a motor speech disorder.
Avatar n tn He plays fine with his brother but only really with one toy his wreslters and he loves to play the computer (which he plays only for at most 1/2 hour a day)maybe he is just slow at things. He is in speech therapy now but to be honest it isnt making one bit of difference.
Avatar f tn My daughter also had/has problems with speech. Turns out she has autism. Long before we got this diagnosis she was in speech therapy. Therapy helped a lot and I'm glad we started it as soon as we did. Try using PECS (picture exchange cards) to help him communicate. Even if he will grow out of this and it is not autism, he will probably develop some frustration from being unable to communicate well. The cards could be a great tool for him. You could also teach him some sign language.
Avatar f tn As far as an evaluation, an occupational therapist looks for sensory issues. Occupational therapy is play therapy. Kid loves it and it addresses the nervous system. My son is now almost 6 and is a completely different kid. Insurance probably covers it. OR, you could call your local public school system and request an evaluation.
Avatar f tn m glad that you are getting physical therapy treatment - as well as an eval for PT, OT, speech, etc. It is scary that your symptoms started not even a year ago and they're already suggesting a wheelchair. If you have PPMS, like I think I have (even though my DX is RRMS), then unfortunately, the answer would be no, there are no disease modifying drugs for people with PPMS. However, if you have secondary progressive, then some DMDs may work for you.
Avatar f tn You may want to ask your pediatrician for a referral for a speech evaluation. Depending on his age, speech may not be a bad idea. Sometimes when more demands are placed upon a child, his capabilities for fluent speech decrease. Extraneous movements could be from stuttering but also from a tic disorder. So you'd want someone to rule out the possibilities. Speech therapy can help in more ways think you would think, and would be of no cost if he is in public schools.
Avatar m tn I went to my speech therapy this morning. She had me saying ahhhhhh, ooooh, eeeeh and reading from what looked like a grade second reader. The she made a mistake. She said, "Tell me a little about yourself." Now, being a complete windbag I went into a dissertation that rocked her back on her heels. She kept asking me to take a deep breath as i talked.
193609 tn?1292180293 She said that they do educational speech therapy and that Ashtyn needs Clinical speech therapy. Is there anything that would be as helpful as speech therapy since my insurance wont cover it and the ISD doesn't do the speech therapy that he needs? Ashtyn is very behind in almost all communication skills. I don't know what else to do for him, and no one can help him!
667445 tn?1230750538 Yes U should look into speech therapy, but therapy in general...make sure his hearing is ok......there r forms of autisum that can case speech delays...look up aspbergers (sp?).......I hope ur son responds to whichever therapy u choose.
Avatar f tn He did not have any behavioural issues other than frustration with those not understanding him. He was two years of age when he was diagnosed (and speech therapy began immediately); today he is going on eight years and the apraxia has all but disappeared. He is doing so well (the speech issues are almost non-existent) - how early did your son begin therapy? Just wondering ....
Avatar m tn HOpefully your son is going through the school system (early childhood education) or getting speech therapy or some sort of help. States are required to give you a free evaluation and offer these things to our children. Your pediatrician's office should refer you to an appropriate doctor.
168006 tn?1241012961 Hello Ladies, Since many of you are praying people, I wanted to ask you all to pray for Luke today. I am taking him to a speech pathologist this afternoon for an evaluation. It is difficult to explain everything behind it, but essentially, Luke says only about four to six words at nearly 22 months old. This would not be particularly scary, since I hear late talkers are actually pretty common, but the docs seem most concerned that he used to say about 20 words at 12 months.
Avatar f tn Have you thought about getting a referral from her pediatrician to get her tested for autism? If she does have autism, the diagnosis open's new doors. ABA seems to be the route that most parents of children with autism go. I have heard alot of great things about ABA but haven't tried it yet because of costs. There is also floor time and some others I can't think of at the moment.
Avatar n tn No she doesnt sound Autistic but possily needs some speech therapy, do you and your husband interact with her Reading and a lot of talking ?some children are late developers aswell so dont get too worried yet ,find some little play group if there is one, other mOms there to compare with you.I agree with everything that tiredbut happy says in the above Post.
Avatar f tn What was the information from his speech evaluation? There are three parts to speech. Receptive (taking in what is said to you and processing it), expressive (organizing what you want to say) and articulation (forming the words). If any one of these has an issue, speech can be delayed. All are slightly different. My son had articulation issues first. That has gone away completely. He does have some processing issues. He processes slowly.
Avatar f tn I would make an appointment for an evaluation with a Speech Therapist just so you can put you fears to rest. Most insurance will cover an eval. I do know the younger a child is when the receive speech therapy, the easier it is to correct. Has she been nervous about anything? Has she had any accidents lately?
931175 tn?1244457804 If stress, anxiety and/or depression are part of her dynamics. Stress management tools, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and/or medication could help. Avatar n tn Does she likes lining stuff.... She plays with other kids... My baby girl love playing pretend.... Her brother has speech delay and his in autistic class he gets speech and ot occupational therapy ....he still doesn't express him self very well but his doing better...it might take a while for your girl to start talking...I put my son in preschool when he was 4 1/2...he didn't say much and he would get really frustrated..... Now his 6 years and his doin much better...
Avatar n tn You are doing the right thing getting him tested, and hopefully the experts can diagnose and get some treatment and/or therapy started for him. I haven't experienced what you are going through with him but I can imagine how difficult it is. Obviously something is amiss and he is young and will likely respond to treatment. My advice is to be open to what they say but follow your gut feelings as his mother, you know him best and are his best advocate.
Avatar m tn He has also talked a few times about neding to talk to himself to calm himself and once he told a neighbor about talking to another imaginary person. son also has always had a speech delay, he goes to speech therapy and it has helped alot, but still needs work. His behavior has not imporved hardly at all eventhough his speech has over the last few years. Please tell me what you think is going on with my son and what you think is his problem and what we should do about it. Please help!
