Common Questions and Answers about Speech therapist evaluation

speech

Avatar f tn s development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
Avatar n tn She was assessed by early intervention (psychologist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist) and her pediatrician for autism and no one had any concerns. The speech therapist said she should be evaluated by a neuropsychologist. This is a very expensive assessment. Given the fact that she has been evaluated a couple of times do you think this is necessary? I am so frustrated, I have been trying to get her speech help for so long and have jumped through so many hoops.
Avatar n tn I live in Delhi, India and My pediatrician suggested me to consult speech therapist and I visited speech therapist also. He says she will talk in few months after attending few sessions, however, i dont see any change in my daughter after attending 5 sessions also. She imitates all the things but dont speak.......pls guide..
Avatar f tn All of last week, she was being assessed and doing various evaluations by the physiotherapist, occupational therapist, the speech therapist and a neuropsychology. This week, there are a few more assessments to do and then they will begin with the therapy required. She has not shown any improvements in her movement. We are past 4 weeks and from what I have been reading online, this means that no neurological recovery has taken place. Does that mean that it won't happen?
Avatar f tn I would make an appointment for an evaluation with a Speech Therapist just so you can put you fears to rest. Most insurance will cover an eval. I do know the younger a child is when the receive speech therapy, the easier it is to correct. Has she been nervous about anything? Has she had any accidents lately?
Avatar f tn My DS is highly functioning, extremely intelligent, beautiful, and to meet him you would never know at this age...except that he gets frustrated easily and his tantrums may be worse than normal...and wwe need a lot of work on social skills. I am learning that there are so many signs and symptoms that no two children with spectrum disorders are the same...if you observed ten children they would all be so different that you may not even associate them as having alot of the same issues.
Avatar f tn Since you mention that your son has already been seeing a speech therapist and an OT, I am going to assume that you are receiving these services through your local Early Intervention Program (EIP). Has your son’s pediatrician or anyone at the EIP recommended any additional assessment and treatment?
Avatar n tn It would be wise to have him undergo a Sensory Integration evaluation. Such an evaluation is conducted by an Occupational Therapist. He should also undergo an evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. These two evaluations will yield the kind of information you are seeking.
Avatar f tn no tantrums but some sleeping issue. she had her hearing test, and it came her hearing is okey. she had her speech therapist its been 3 months already but seems not improving. and last week she started her OT from baby cant wait. does anybody has any idea what kind of therapy does she need aside from this 2 therapies? im worried all the time and sometimes feeling hopeless. i cant sleep good at night thinking what im gonna do, keep doing some research about her problem.
Avatar f tn I would ask the school about his speech. If he's in public school maybe they could do a speech evaluation to see where they are. Five year old boys are VERY immature. His social skills may be behind too.
Avatar n tn You should also call this doctor and ask for a referral to an OT therapist and speech therapist to schedule these evaluations. You so not want to end up in 6 months waiting another 6 months for these OT and speech specialists to evaluate him. Six months to 12 months is too long in the life of a 3 year old. Early interventions and therapies are key to getting these children up to speed. You do not want to waste time.
Avatar m tn I wanted to take him to a speech therapist but the drs insisted that I take him to a neuro pediatric. She classified him as very mild autistic in the 30 minutes she saw him. The reasons where: 1- He flapped his hands a bit 2- She gave him a car. He played with it normally on the floor but when he gave it to her, he turned it around and spun the wheel like once or twice. 3- He wanted the car back and when she didnt give it to him, he threw himself on the floor and started crying.
Avatar f tn What are the causes of this? Could this be something like ADHD? My mother told me that my speech therapist said that some of my myelin could be missing because of my ADHD. Could this be true?
Avatar n tn Sometimes only one dilation is necessary to fix the problem. You may also need to see a speech therapist, who actually works with more than just speech, for a swallowing test. Sometimes if your reflexes are out of whack, a speech therapist can train you on techniques to swallow more effectively. I am not a medical professional, yada yada, I just know people with these problems.
Avatar f tn If he was quiet, he may have not built up the muscles that he needs to talk. A speech therapist from the school district can help. It would be a good idea to also have him tested if the doctor is suggesting it. If you feel uncomfortable with that, arrange for the speech therapist to work with him to see if there is any improvement.
Avatar f tn Blowing bubbles helps to build up these muscles and position the lips to be able to talk. We found this out after having a speech therapist from the school district come into our home. Our daughter was a quiet infant and her muscles didn't get strong because of it. Her frenulum goes back very far and she could and still can stick her tongue out and touch her nose and chin. She is talking a lot now after the speech therapist helped for just a few months.
Avatar n tn You are doing the right thing getting him tested, and hopefully the experts can diagnose and get some treatment and/or therapy started for him. I haven't experienced what you are going through with him but I can imagine how difficult it is. Obviously something is amiss and he is young and will likely respond to treatment. My advice is to be open to what they say but follow your gut feelings as his mother, you know him best and are his best advocate.
Avatar n tn he was evaluated by a speech therapist, child phsycologist and pediatrition and the outcome was while some aspects of his behavior showed autism others didnt so they couldnt say what was wrong with,he makes good eye contact and is affectionate but doesnt fit in at school as he is so far behind .
Avatar f tn Hi my sister-n-law had triplets and then another set of twins. All premie's and all with delayed speech. By age 2 they all had a speech therapist work with them because of weak mouth/tongue. Within a short period of time they all had advanced in their language skills. The therapist said with some mouth exercises they have really caught up. They are now 6 and 3 yrs old.
Avatar n tn Children become very attached to caregivers. The speech therapist who will be working with him should be able to give you more information about behavior and/or other developmental concerns specific to your child. He/she SHOULD have knowledge of normal development and when to refer to other professionals for screening/evaluations.
Avatar n tn I would think that something like that in combination with exercises to strengthen the swallowing reflex may help him out a lot. Definitely talk to a speech therapist - they can do an evaluation to see where he is and determine the best step to take next.
168006 tn?1241012961 He is extremely social, communicative, and loving. His speech skills are far behind what they should be. He sees a speech therapist as well as an occupational therapist twice a week and that has really helped him. He does not take any meds (even if they tried I would not let him take them). My suggestion would be to get your son examined by a child psychologist- try and get a diagnosis. The main issue you may have is that it seems that your son once had skills and has now regressed.
584252 tn?1218223686 Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.
Avatar n tn Has there been any comprehensive evaluation done by a team of educators (Special Education Teacher, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Psychologist)?
779913 tn?1236003421 What type of speech/language delay does she have? Has she had a speech/language evaluation -- if so, how delayed is she? I'm not familiar with a body of literature that identifies a causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease specifically with speech delay. I'm interested to hear your answers and I'll keep up with this discussion.
Avatar f tn It is his speech/language status that may be of some concern and you can certainly arrange a speech/language evaluation. This can be done by the school system or through your health care providers. In any case, there is no point worrying and wondering what might be occurring. Schedule the evaluations and then you will know.
Avatar n tn Does he also use Delayed Echolalia eg. pieces of dialogue phrases or words from TV or films? The Speech and Language Therapist should be able to tell you more about it. I would specifically be asking for a Speech and Language Therapist who also has experience of autism. Does your son mix up his pronouns eg. I, me, you, yours, mine, us etc. What is your son's social interaction skills like? Are there things that your son is good at eg. puzzles, lego, pattern recognition etc.
Avatar m tn My 2 year old son has a speech delay. I got a referral to NC's CES (early intervention) when he was 19 months old & a program manager & therapist came in to do an initial evaluation. He was not deemed as having anything but a mild speech delay so we started him weekly with an educator that came into our home weekly. Since having her start his vocabulary has increased to 20-35 words, some "sounds" for words, & knows the sounds of several of his alphabet sounds.
Avatar f tn He needs to have one home, he needs both his mom and dad as well as grandparents in one location and he needs to be eveluated by a speech therapist or school district to start speech therapy. I can not believe that his mom would allow him to be away from her for 4 or 6 months at the tender age of two!! That alone tells alot.
