Avatar m tn I think the surgery released me from upper body tension but I still have speech problems and the tongue is quite short. My doctor says that when it will completely heal in 1-2 months she will check it again and maybe I will have one more surgery. I wrote a lot about tongue-tie on the internet but there was not anything about that sometimes you need to have more than one surgery to completly release the tongue. So are there any situations when one surgery is not enough?
Avatar n tn Prior to the surgery my tongue used to drift into the gap on the right handside where the cant occured and therefore my tongue is no longer asymetrical. It is causing me lot of problems in speech as now the gap is no longer their, the tongue has re-formed leaving it feeling like their is a large mass of tongue on one side of my mouth (the right side) and is not shaped at the side (like the left side) as it should be, thus catches between my upper and lower teeth when trying to speak.
Avatar m tn What you have is probably dysarthria or distorted speech due to inability to coordinate the muscles of speech. Local causes like fixed tongue, thick tongue, and cracked tongue should be looked into. Transient ischemic attack, Wilson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, myasthenia gravis etc are some of the causes of dysarthria.
3053649 tn?1356365017 That little piece of flesh under the tongue is very close or at the tip of the babies tongue which can cause speech problems and trouble with breast feeding. So what happens is the doc will recommend it to be clipped to free the movement of the tongue. It literally takes 2 seconds and barely bleeds. My son just had it done. He's adjusting to the freedom of moving his tongue around.
Avatar f tn My oldest son (now 8) is tongue tied. We found out at his 18 month appointment and realized that was why he could never latch on for breastfeeding. However, the Dr said at that point they recommend waiting to see of it affected him before having his frenulum cut. He's in 2nd grade this year and has never had any speech problems due to the short tongue. IMO, if your baby isn't having problems eating, just leave it be. If as he gets older he starts having issues, you could look into it.
Avatar m tn Right now, when I was trying to explain how my tongue might affect my speech, I was trying to explain how my tongue keeps my mouth almost-closed, and it took me a solid two minutes to type the word "almost-closed," which I still have no idea if it's a word or not. I feel like I have gaps in my brain where my basic communicative vocabulary used to be stored. So what can I do to improve my speech?
Avatar f tn Do tongue exercises----------- stick tongue out and pull it in really fast, move tongue side to side, move tongue up to roof of mouth (may be hard for him), trace lips with tongue. Suck a lollypop. Blow bubbles. Take a straw cut in half and blow a cotton ball across a table ----------- do it with him and have a race. Drink thick liquids through a straw such as smoothie, milkshake or applesauce. When he says something wrong, try not to always correct him.
Avatar f tn I was born tongue tied (never know it was called that) lol I was fine, no speech problems at all. I didn't get it cut until I was 11. Everything has been normal ever since, my tongue is just a little short.
Avatar m tn In fact, when I was younger I was very fluent with the tongue and could eloquently speak even the most complex sentences. Today I am 19, and I have trouble speaking 100% and words/sentences end up being tongue twisters for me. It makes me unconfident when I want to ask a question knowing I probably wouldn't be able to say it right. It's like when I speak my tongue kind of trips itself, or better say that it gets "stiff".
Avatar f tn I also have the slurred speech, but like thieb9 I have excessive saliva. it tends to happen in the evenings for me. Its an almost daily occurrence. I try not to talk when I feel that way. I also experience cognitive issues when this happens too. I don't realize it at the time, but if I answer an email then reread it the following morning it will be jumbled up like a child typed it..... I try and do all my buisness early in the day before my brain turns to mush and the symptoms flare.
541264 tn?1359203511 I'd rule out anything physical (like mouth formation problems, being tongue tied, teeth issues) and also have his hearing checked--hearing problems can cause speech issues, too. Then I'd see if speech therapy is a possibility. Can you have him evaluated--to see if there are any other issues with him? My son didn't speak clearly for quite a while (he spoke later than other kids his age)--then when he did start speaking, he couldn't say his "r's" and he had a lisp.
Avatar f tn Turns out my most severe lesions are on the part of the brain that controls speech. Spanish is my mother tongue and i will find myself writing everything in English. Can't find the words, stop in the middle of a sentence, because, even tho in my head i know exactly what i want to say, the word just won't come up, etc, etc, etc.. Hun, did you get a MRI already? I also suffer from AS (Ankylosing Spondylitis) and Fibromyalgia. Talk about this with your Dr.
647350 tn?1228618670 The doctor who I saw (one covering for my GP) told me that my speech was odd to her. It seemed, to her, that I had a 'mouth full of candy' making my speech seem odd. She suggested that I follow up with my neurologist. She also said it could just be due to the fact that she had never seen me before and didn't really know me, but it would be a good idea to have it checked out anyway. Has anyone else ever been told that MS has caused speech disturbances like this?
Avatar m tn I do not have Sjogrens, Lupus or any of those auto-immune diseases according to my Rheumy. I would have to say the swallowing problems came first but now my speech is being effected dry mouth or not. I do this most everyday at some point or another. This started this year, it is my fairly newest symptom.
Avatar n tn hey, my tongue is too thick,i cannot pronounce clearly. so people cannot clearly understand some words i speak. its hard for me to communicate for long time or in presentations. please help me. thanks.
Avatar f tn I have never been able to say my R's I was in speech for 5 years and it didn't help at all. I'm not tongue tied I've been checked. Hope the best for him it wasn't horrible growing up not being able to say it but it wasn't a piece of cake either, I got made fun of a lot but everyone "Thought it was cute/sexy" for some reason lol.
Avatar f tn Had stroke two years ago. Tongue has progressively become numb. Is there new hope/treatment for help in relieving and/or stopping creeping numbness?
Avatar m tn Lyme Disease can cause back and shoulder pain, as well as neurological problems that can lead to speech problems. It can also cause numbness in the tongue and face, which.can also cause speech issues.m generally, there are other symptoms, although these could be his first two. Could he have been exposed to a tick before his symptoms started?
Avatar f tn I used to take Effexor and felt it really helped until I started getting tongue cramps and problems with speech fluidity. I then went back to Lexapro and have less problems but still have some speech issues and tongue cramping or freezing. Is there an anti-depressant that has less side effects? Does it sound like an allergic reaction or something neurological? I feel I need the medication but can't tolerate speech issues.
2098262 tn?1333322736 He also used to stick out his tongue and that stopped. He has been under the care of a doctor and a speech therapist and they never noticed any abnormalities with his mouth. This morning, he had his mouth open and I noticed (NEVER saw it before today) a webbing that went from the tip of his tongue to the floor of his mouth. Is it possible to develop a tongue tie later in childhood or was it always there and has just gotten worse? Thanks!
Avatar n tn what might be the cause of waking up suddenly from sleep during night because of a choking sensation due to severe swelling of tongue (so much swelling that I was unable to fit in my dentures) .This was associated with extremely garbled speech. I didn't call 911 because i couldn't speak. I checked in mirror and my smile was not distorted. I am a 63 yr. old female who is on medication for hypertension and have a strong family history for stroke and heart disease.
Avatar n tn She recently got into a major altercation with some family folks and because of the mental and emotional distress she has lost her speech ability. She can speak but with a heavy tongue and she says that she cannot feel her tongue. Can anyone tell me if this phenomenon is temporary or permanent. Also what can I do to reverse this condition?
Avatar f tn There are two types of speech disorders that occur in MS, dysarthrias and dysphonias. Speech problems where the motor muscle components of speech are affected are dysarthrias (these typically affect volume control and articulation) while speech problems that affect voice quality are dysphonias.
Avatar f tn So my first baby had a tongue tie and I was unsuccessful at breastfeeding I had to pump the entire time. I did get it snipped but he was to use to bottles I just couldn't stand the pain, the doctor who snipped it though told me it was genetic so I'm just wondering has anyone had a baby with tongue tie and their next babies were also??
559187 tn?1330782856 OK, so here are a few exercises I learned from speech ladyI for tongue strengthing or as I like to call it "PT for your tongue". They are designed to strengthen the muscle at the back of the tongue so we have more control over what is being swallowed. Take a spoon and put the tip of your tongue against it and push as hard as you can. Hold for 5 seconds Do reps of 5-10 at least 10 times throughout the day. Bite down on the tip of your tongue and try to swallow.
