Avatar f tn I am concerned in that because is elderly that he is being medicated for something neurological they were unable to diagnose. I had an elderly friend of the family whom my mother knew. He was in the hospital and he had some blood loss after surgery. He started talking incoherently because of this and they almost gave him Risperdal for "psychosis". Of course my mother stopped them and he did not have any "psychosis" but imagine if she hadn't.

Avatar f tn Retreatment therefore should be guided by the clinical progress (or lack thereof) of the patient not just the scans. However it is very useful if someone is having symptoms like this to have a scan, even if you wouldn't repeat the operation as they are too well, just so that if they are a bit worse in another few days or a week you have something to compare a new scan with, and then the treating neurosurgeon will have a handle on what's going on.
Avatar n tn //www.webmd.com/migraines-headaches/geriatric-headaches#1 It may be a result of her stroke, or perhaps she has had some TIAs - her neurologist may be able to answer that question. There are treatments that are safe for the elderly that may help reduce the frequency and/or severity, even if you can't figure out a cause. I hope she finds some relief.
Avatar m tn Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech. There is a particular type of speech that is characteristic of MS and is called "scanning speech." You probably have all heard it at some time.
9771188 tn?1405907831 Has anyone had problems communicating? I have problems with finding the right word to use. Sometimes I use I will get so frustrated. My family and friends say that I repeat myself a lot. I do know this, especially when I am excited, happy or upset. I completely lose my train of thought. I used to be able to speak in public, and train people. This has been difficult for me. Am I alone? I have battled through much worse demons than this, but I don't want to give up now.
Avatar f tn No, I don't think so it is the symptom of end of life. I lived with my father in law who was 94 years old when he came in. He's healthy, only with asthma. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us).

Avatar n tn Calcification in the basal ganglia (which includes the globus pallidus) is considered a normal incidental and idiopathic finding in elderly patients but other etiologies should be entertained in patients younger than 40 years old. One entity to consider is Fahr disease. Calcium build-up in the basal ganglia can also happen because of infection, problems with your parathyroid gland, and for other reasons.

Avatar f tn The first symptom is usually an intermittent twitching of the eyelid muscle that can lead to forced closure of the eye. The spasm may then gradually spread to involve the muscles of the lower face, which may cause the mouth to be pulled to one side. Eventually the spasms involve all of the muscles on one side of the face almost continuously. The condition may be caused by a facial nerve injury, or a tumor, or it may have no apparent cause.
Avatar m tn t breathe all the time even though the spirometer tests were normal and I was scared about it. Have you seen a speech therapist? It made a world of a difference for me. What happened is, and I know this sounds crazy, but your body has probably forgotten how to breathe. Since anxiety makes people have bad breathing patterns, even when you're not anxious, you can feel out of breath. I laughed when I was told to go to a speech therapist but I was oh so wrong.
Avatar n tn My mom started having slight speech problems around late 1996. She got her diagnosis in the fall of 98 if I remember right. By then her speech was slurred a lot but you could still understand her. She didn't really develop any other issues until probably around 2001 when she fell on some ice and broke her hip. That seemed to speed up the process and she started having trouble swallowing the following year and started getting weakness and paralysis in her extremities.

Avatar n tn Just last week it was announced again that Natalie Cole now requires a kidney transplant and that is on the heels of her doing Hep C treatment. The frustrating thing is that Ms. Cole does not say what has caused her kidney problems and that lack of information has caused people to assume it was the treatment.
